Last spring we decided to make a new Nike SB video showcasing our hot young am riders, shot entirely in hi-def and to be dropped by April ’09. With videographer Jason Hernandez added and HD cameras in his and Joey Digital’s trusty hands, we got underway in July. Working on a video with only nine months and change makes for a hectic skate life, so when a scheduling conflict postponed our plan for a full-length trip to South America just before Christmas, we had no choice but keep it moving and rig a quick ride to Mexico.

Ace SLAP lensman El Guapo Blanco (aka Fat Back) was recruited, Mexican SB flow ripper Gabe de la Mora was enlisted, and we were off. Our crew consisted of Grant Taylor, Justin Brock, David Clark, Daryl Angel, Theotis Beasley, and the eldest kiddo of the bunch, Stefan Janoski. BA was going to come with us but we were going to be in Mexico the same weekend as Thrasher’s SOTY. Little did we know, that same weekend the local skate mag Urbe was hosting their own awards party, which we called the MOTY: Mexican of the Year. Our Nike SB brother, guide, and head bribe negotiator Gabe de la Mora took home the best non-Mexican video part award! Our very own MOTY! Yeah, Gabe! Also missing was little Shane “Nugget” O’Neill, who was busy dodging Devils down in Tasmania.

In the end, we were in Mexico City for four days and Guadalajara for three. We skated amazing spots, had more fun than ought to be legal, climbed a pyramid, ate amazing food, bribed cops, grappled with Montezuma, and probably won’t go back to Ciudad de Mexico for quite some time. The thin and polluted air was barely tolerable, and the traffic in the world’s biggest city was insane. Any spot was three hours away by car. Even the best crew gets grouchy stuck in a barely moving van for three hours. Look for some clips of the fun we had on nikeskateboarding.com, and in the video which will be out in April.
