On Friday, my Dad hit some gravel on a windy road in Oregon and got pitched from his motorcycle and flew into a tree. He broke his Femur in 10 places, his right elbow, his ankle and numerous other bones. On the brighter side of a shitty situation, there was no injury to his brain or spine and his surgery on his femur exceeded the doctor's expectations. Shit's scary and gave me a reality check that tomorrow's never guaranteed. Now begins the very long road to recovery.

Glad to hear your dad came out of that alive. Not stoked on dating a girl with severe depression. Can make things super hard to deal with some times.

Glad your dad's going to be ok. Motorcycle wrecks are gnarly as shit.

Glad to hear your Dad's doing alright for how gnarly that accident sounds.

Went downstairs around 11 to get a drink of water before going to bed. Stubbed my toe so fucking hard into the kitchen table that it swelled up instantly, instant oh fuck. Thought I broke my toe, so I told my fiance to drive my now gimpy ass to the ER, they said it wasn't broken, just swelling a lot, they basically took what amounted to a smaller, thinner, sterile nail and popped my fucking toe right at the knuckle. Blood spurted out and all over the floor of a shockingly not busy ER patient room. Just now got home, and have to go to work tomorrow early to set up a presentation for some clients whilst limping on this now wrapped up and iced toe. On slap because I can never sleep anyway, but tonight was actually feeling kind of tired and hoping to catch some z's. Goddamnit.

Nobody to skate with or gettin inspired from/share things sucks, makes my only period of holiday/chilling so boring...

I know how that is. Lot's of my friends have quit or are in the process of quitting. Messaged one of my friends today to see if he wanted me to pick him up for a skate. "Where are you thinking of heading?" he asked. "Skatepark X," I replied. Then he writes back with "Nah man I've got some shit to do around the house." Hmmmm. I had a good skate on my own anyway.

A lot of my friends have quit lately or just put skating on hold. I hit up my one friend to skate today because I have off and his response was " Its too hot out and I dont like sweating", Its pretty lame. Skating solo all the time can get pretty boring.

Yeah, unless it's ridiculously hot, that's a fucking lame excuse. Skating solo can be boring but i've been hitting up some park i never used the skate that's about a 20 minute drive away, and I always seem the skate it on my own. It's kind of laid out like a ditch, and has a bank to ledge on one side and a bank to parking block on the other, plus a sick mini ramp. Trying to learn new shit is a good way to keep solo skating interesting.

Thats pretty rad. I would skate a park solo, but all the parks by me are closed off and if the cops catch you you either get a ticket or arrested. My solo missions consist of me going to a hockey rink with my flatbar and skating the crappy box that is there.

Yeah, that's it..fucking lame excuses, I mean fuck if I had someone to skate with I would have learned a lot more stuff than the still pretty basic tricks I can do, and have much fun in general..
I also like to skate alone a lot, one because it's the only way 80% of the time, two because it's pure meditation, thinking about your shit, perfect silence and whatnot.
I don't even have places to choose to go, because parks are 40 mins drive minimum, and driving with gas at 1.7 ?/L it's a pain in the ass, so I just go and hit the same place over and over and it gets only more boring

To Johnny Rocketflips: That's how i was feeling a lot lately - bummed out and unmotivated when there's noone to roll with - but then i realised you've just gotta get out there and make it happen for yourself. If you have spot and trick ideas at least you'll have a goal for yourself and that will make it more fun. If you just keep keeping on it'll make you a stronger skater in the end. Cracking a beer can also help for the motivation.

Rod Kimble: What do you mean "the parks are closed off"? Are these public parks? I live in Australia and the thought of getting busted for skating at a skatepark is pretty fucked up. We don't have any pad nannies or helmet patrol pigs. We can pretty much drink beers at any park also and not get hassled (as long as we don't leave a mess).

Mark Renton: I agree about the meditation and solitude. It's a good way to get away from your thoughts and just zone out. I'm starting to enjoy it more and more. It definitely helps to have a couple beers though. That sucks that you have to drive so far to go to a park. Do you have any ditches or anything like that? I live on a coastal plane so there's no ditches at all, but we have lots of parks.

How old are you guys anyway, and where do you live? I'm 24, live in Perth Western Australia. I've already gone through the first wave of people quitting when they hit 17 or 18, now I feel like it's happening again. There's still lots of skaters but I'm kind of a wierdo and I don't like a lot of them. They seem like a different breed than when I started. I can barely walk into a skateshop without feeling totally out of place. Oh well. Fuck 'em.

Edit: Off for some solo shredding right now!

A friend sent me this clip:
Small | Large

which is brilliant in every way; however, whilst watching some follow-up videos i noticed the date of the youtube users last activity, which is the day the tsunami struck Japan.

I think nothing from the internet has ever affected me like this before

Im 24 and live in New Jersey and it sucks. Everyone who skates by me that arent my friends are just shitty people and i dont want to associate with them. Also all of the parks in my town have 10 or twelve foot fences with gates that are now permanently locked. They are public skateparks but people in the town bitched and complained and the cops shut them down. It wasnt because of the skaters either that they complained. It was about all of the scumbags that didnt skate that would go there in the middle of the night and would hang out at the parks and start fights, do drugs, graffitti the ramps with their shitty tags.

That is fucked up. What a great way to stop kids doing bad shit: take away something positive in their community! We actually had a very similar thing happen recently. There was a really rad metal mini ramp a few suburbs away (quite a yuppy suburb), I think it was built around 2000 or 2001. Years later, they built some shitty yuppy houses right near the ramp, and about 3 years ago the fuckers who live there started complaining about kids going there at night to do the same shit that you just described, and the fucking city took the ramp down. I was working as a garbage man in that suburb at the time and they stashed the ramp at the local depot....I had fantasies of breaking in an stealing it, but never had the resources or the will. Fucking waste of a good mini ramp.

Just watched an episode of big bang theory in it's entirety and have now begun watching and episode of rules of engagement. Bummed. Much as I am enjoying my voluntary unemployment there is seriously nothing on T.v during the day.

Smoke some weed and turn on a Mexican channel.  If you can't get into it go find a job because you suck at being unemploeyed.

The same thing happened to this little free park about 1/4 mile from my house.  Nothing special, but smooth ground, a box, some QPs and a flat bar.  It became the place for high school kids to hang out.  Like 5 kids skating and 20 sitting around smoking throwing trash on the ground.  The city shut it down.  Fucking kids.

Huge bummer. I hope someone stole the ramps. There are some parks in my state that are so trashed, you can barely roll. Like, rolling into mandarin peels and shit all over the place.

My hairline is receiding fast. Scary.

My teeth are getting really yellow even though I take good care of them. Scary.

Somehow this all reminds me that I am growing older and will die. Scary.

its tough if theres not a lot of people who actually skate it, but you gotta regulate your park. especially if its high school kids

We kept it regulated when we were skating there. The problem was at night when the lights were out scumbags from my town would go there and do whatever they pleased.

The realest skate shop in my town has closed it's doors after years of operation.  I've been getting over this ankle injury and want to get new stuff, and the other shops in town are a zumiez mall shop where 16 year old girls ask if you want designs in your grip before they butcher it, and a shop almost dedicated to selling drug paraphernalia to scum bags.

You do know that you have the option to have them not grip it right? And Im sure you are a big boy and can grip your own board.

No shit.  I'm talking about the people behind the counter and not who grips what.  I've been gripping my own boards for twelve years.  The shop was skater owned and operated, made their own boards, had a mini ramp in the back.  I miss it.  We're left with overpriced bullshit.  Good job singling out a single sentence and taking the entire thing out of context.
