I've been shooting at night, because the colors and long exposures make the picture look cool enough that it covers up for the fact that I can't think of anything worth taking a picture of for the life of me lately.

Anyway, I am running into what I think is digital kickback:


This is digital kickback, right?  If so, do you have any advice on how to avoid that at night / in long exposures?

What is the problem with this? I have never heard of digital kickback.

Are you referring to the light glare in the right side of the frame? It's just something you can work with through adjusting your lighting settings. Maybe your ISO but be careful with doing that.

Digital kickback, as was briefly explained to me in a camera shop once upon a time, is when you have your shutter open and light reflects off of the sensors and bounces back onto the glass, fucking with your picture.  I'm not a huge fan of the reflection of the light off of my filter and lens (the two overlapping dots on the right of the picture, and admittedly have no idea what to do to fix / prevent it.

thats really interesting i never knew that, i geuss the easiest thing to do whould be to photoshop blot it out if its on a black background, but if its film or you dont want to fuck with it then i have no idea

Well I have to say that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, and this guy camera store man sounds like a kook.

All that those marks are is glare from the light hitting each element in the lens. There is no way it would reflect off the sensor. It happens to all cameras; film & digi, video & still. I wouldn't worry about it, it even happens to your eyes.

I'm just bummed because I have some other shots from that night that I stitched together in photoshop and don't really feel like rubber stamping.  Thanks for the help.

Same. Although I'm really no good when it comes to touching up my photos in photoshop. I need to get it for my new computer, I just have shitty photostudio that came with my scanner. It doesnt even let me save in any upload friendly file types. But I'll post some stuff as soon as it does.

its just flare.  youd probably get it in the same spot if you were shooting with the sun in the background, except it might turn up blue or green.  zoom lenses -- even ones with good multicoating -- are especially susceptible to it, for what its worth.
