Penn & Teller: Bullshit! is one of my favorite shows. It's one of the few programs out there geared toward a higher class crowd of folks like myself. If you get Showtime, or don't mind sitting in front of a computer screen to watch television, definitely give it a watch.

I have only seen a few episodes and to me it was the same ol right wing nut job, global warming is fake, recycling is stupid etc... Maybe I will give it a few more watches, and yeah that pony tail doesn't help their creditability in my eyes.  And yeah Dr Douche bag is worthless.

Yeah, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. I remember an article I saw way back about a study this dude did that found that people created more pollution if they walk than drive, b/c of the extra amount of food they would have to eat for all the calories they would burn walking. A couple of things this particular study didn't take into account was the amount of energy that goes into extraction and transportation of oil, as well as energy used in building a car (it's something like the equivalent of driving 12,000 miles, to build one car). All the pollution the dude was measuring was from the tail pipe. Also, this study said that four people were riding in a car, but really, how often do you see that, so that they would all need food for walking, and it also calculated the pollution from their food by saying they got all their calories from beef - which is the most energy intensive food! So, basically, if you twist shit enough, you can get published, which is all these dudes want to do, or, if you are Penn and Teller, you can get your ass on TV and get paid, do you think they really give a fuck about the greater good and informing the public??

resisting...urge...to puke environmental studies degree all over this thread (and Newton's face)...argh...

simply put: given how long nearly all of our trash takes to decompose in landfills, it makes infinitely more sense to keep materials in use rather than permanently (as far as human lifetimes are concerned) take them out of the loop.  raw materials of any sort are a finite resource.  conserve them by recycling.  it's just common sense.

every time i see someone throw away an aluminum can, i want to punch them in the face.

The show is usually pretty good, and there are a few good arguments here such as the amount of resources it takes to recycle the materials being self-defeating to the cause.

In any case it's good to actually think about things like this instead of accepting everything at face value.
