^That thing is so clean.

For any of you guys who know a thing or two about bikes, what are my options if I'm just looking for a small displacement bike? I'm talking like, anywhere from 50cc toys to maybe 200cc. I think scooters have taken over that market these days, but I don't think they're as fun.

I bought a 1973 Honda 175 cl Scrambler in Kansas for $450.
Was super fun. Small bikes are great for zipping through the city.
Any smaller than that & it might not be too fun though.

Like this:
[Except blue, and much shittier & I took the fenders off]

^I've been looking at old Hondas for awhile now. I'm gonna be honest here, I'm not the most mechanically inclined person and I'm a broke college student. Two factors that completely go against buying something old that'll potentially bleed my wallet dry. I don't even know if parts are easy to come by.

There's a dude on craigslist who has an old '75 CB125 that looks really nice.

I think if I had the resources and time, I would build it up like a baby cafe racer like this:

My uncle tours thousands of miles alone. Colorado to northern Alaska, and Colorado to just north of the panama. He taught me to ride on a gsxr 1000 in a parking lot, then a road, then a race track, in about a week. Dudes also building a house by himself in the rockies right now.

Parts are generally pretty easy to come across for those old Hondas.
I needed a new gas tank and clutch cable to get mine running & got them both on eBay inexpensively.

Go for it.

A pretty ok site my friends run is www.boltsaction.com. I am surprised more people aren't in to Harley stuff. I just got an 02 sportster that I am working on. My friend runs a Harley shop and we have been doing a bunch of stuff to it on the off hours. I will post an updated pic when its done but here it is how I bought it......

I ride around on a tu250, and it serves my purposes really well. I only take it out on the highway early in the morning though when I gotta get somewhere cause upwards of 75 it gets a little iffy.

Don't have a picture but mines stock so it looks a lot like this,

Just got this a few days ago.  My first motorcycle.  It's a 1972 Honda SL125.  I have been riding it nonstop since I got it, and had the best ride yet this morning.  The weather was absolutely perfect, the trees beautiful colors, and I felt perfectly in-tune with the machine for the first time.  It was one of the best feelings I have ever had.  I officially have the bug, I've been dreaming about riding it every night!

thanks dude (and Deertay).  still love my bike to death.  it's only a 350 but the pipes are kind of loud and it feels like i'm going really fast when i ride Smiley

i'm starting to get this urge to get a harley lately.  i think it's hard wired into our genes to want a harley once you start getting to a certain age. like menopause for men, except wanting a bitchin bike

digging the sportsters . guess it doesn't hurt that Heath was in that whole ad campaign..    keep noticing the Harley Iron 883's and really digging them.  i like that the fourtyeight has a fat front tire though, but the matte black on the 883 is beautiful

The caf? racer is a motorcycle that has been modified for speed and handling rather than comfort. Caf? racers' bodywork and control layout typically mimicked the style of contemporary Grand Prix roadracers, featuring an elongated fuel tank and small, rearward mounted, humped seat. A signature trait were low, narrow handlebars that allowed the rider to "tuck in" to reduce wind resistance and offered better control when in that posture.
so a cafe racer is the fixie of the motorcycles?

Built a bunch of old Hondas. Super fun little bikes and fucking bulletproof. Great way to get into bikes since they're very forgiving, simple and cheap.

Here's a few.

Here's my first one. When I bought it ($500)

1st mods

2nd mods

Final mods before I blew the motor.

Stripped it back down. Punching it out just to clean up the cylinders, probably .005. New valves, recut the seats and a lite port job. Electro ignition and probably switch to a 2in1 pipe.

Bought this one for 50 bucks. Sold for 700.

Here's the newest bike I've owned. 94 VFR. I love the whine of the gear driven cams. It's a V4 and solid as a rock. It's considered a sport touring bike, but it's got a little bro'ness in it, but I'll fix that.

For 1300, that's not bad (assuming there is no major problems) and you're only and hour or two away...but my insurance would be insane. I got into a car accident back in '08 and my insurance for a car is about 240 a month.

Gonna resurrect this thread since I've got some new photos.  I've done some design work with a homie's motorcycle shop, Medusa Fabrication, here in Kansas City and they recently put some bikes in a show in Atlanta and they are getting some serious attention.

Here's all three bikes.  I've posted mine before, it's the orange and silver one.  It's a 2002 Triumph Bonneville T100.  It's the Centennial edition, there are only 96 in existence since the factory burned down that year.  Behind it is the bike I designed for my dad and Medusa customized.  It's a 2004 Triumph Thruxton.  The 73 on it is the year my dad drove cross country on a motorcycle and he chose a Kawasaki over a Triumph and regretted it.  Behind that is the baby of the show, but I am posting a better photo of it after the photo of the three.  It's a 2006 Thruxton and as you can see it's been completely rebuilt and is a whole new bike.  It won Best British Bike after 1990.  Proud of the bikes and the shop.

Hate! You think its worth it to drop in on a Triumph? Trying to decide if I want to invest the money and just keep it forever....ya know pass it down to my nephew or something in the future. They are just expensive. I could by a sporty and a project bike for the price of one, they are just so rad though.

I am a British bike nerd, so I am slightly biased.  I am in love with Nortons, BSAs and especially Triumphs.  The newer ones, and I mean in the last century, are well worth it since they don't have the issues that old Triumphs are notorious for (they used to leak like crazy) and they're just stylish bikes.  Older Triumphs (and bikes in general) are investments of both money and TIME.  you have to stay up on maintenance, but that's the joy in them.  I love throwing a record on the turntable and turning wrenches.  Bullshitting with the fellas over a beer and whatnot.

I kinda started to ramble there- if you want a fresh bike with little problem that is a classic- get a newer bike.  They're more than worth the money.

If you want an older bike to work on with the fellas and teach your nephew or whatever- maybe get a little Honda CB750 or something.  They're cheap, reliable and you can mod them out forever.  Or you can start there, flip it and then get something else.  I have  homies that do that all the time, buy an old bike, fix it, ride it, flip it for 3-5x what they even put into it.
