even though the ref broke the record of cards given, i still think he made a few glaring errors:

- de jong should have been red carded for his high kick into xabi's chest

- van bommel got lucky that he didn't get a second yellow, because he committed many questionable tackles

- iniesta should have got yellow or red for the retaliation foul against van bommel. it pretty much was in the same retaliatory context that got zidane sent off in '06.

- iniesta should have got a yellow for the flagrant dive he took against van der wiel

i'm still torn though whether heitinga deserved the second yellow.

the third place game was much nicer to watch and i'm glad mueller was able to get the golden boot.

I can't think of one remarkable incident of them cheating or diving in this game that led to any serious disadvantage to Holland. The only reason the dutch might have pulled fewer dives was because they rarely presented enough of a threat to the opposing teams defense to make them chase them down. Anyway, If you're gonna talk about dives you should look at the way that dutch player went into a barrel roll after iniesta's retaliatory flick of the wrist.

Holland played dirty because they were frustrated that Spain were too good for them in midfield once again and were controlling possession. They deserved all the yellow cards they got and more. Spain played better and deserved to win, sorry.

There were too many yellow cards in the game, that did not mean there were more flagrant dives by Spain. Holland let Spain control the game just like Germany did, they are too strong in the midfield to give them time on the ball.

What was wrong with the goal? He was onside by 3 yards or so.

I thought the whole game was ugly and slow because it was being stopped for fouls every minute or so but I think it was pretty clear Spain deserved the win. The dutch were playing downright ugly soccer. I hope those players screaming in the ref's  face after the goal and after the game about it being offside felt like assholes when they saw the replay and realized they just fucked up and left him wide open and onside. I'm just glad it didn't go to penalty kicks.

However, I would have much rather have had the Germany - Uruguay game be the final as it was far more exciting and fun to watch.
