I don't understand all the hate people have of Element. They've always stood up for skating and none of the other bullshit that other companies (cough, Deathwish, cough) will associate with.

Yeah, they sponsor Bam Margera, but what are they supposed to do? Drop him just because the dude is a weirdo?

Which other company has retained so many of their skaters? Chad Tim Tim, Ray Barbee, Levi Brown, Darrell Stanton, and Nyjah have been with the company for a long time.

I don't think these skaters would stick for such a long time with Element if they weren't doing something right.

Especially Ray Barbee. That dude could be on any skate company.

Yeah, they're so loyal. Like when they kicked Jake Rupp and Tosh Townend off after they both left their old shoe sponsors to start up Element footwear, leaving them basically sponsorless. Same thing with Dallas Rockvam and Brent Atchley (well, with Brent, they randomly dropped him from Element footwear a little while before dropping him from the board company). EDIT: Or kicking off Colt Cannon after he refused to leave Circa for Element footwear. This statement was proven wrong. Or, despite continuing to make and sell shoes, pulling the plug on sponsoring people for Element footwear. That's true support for your team riders if I ever heard it.

When I think of Element I associate it with 12 year old kids in love with Sheckler and street league. Idk why but yeah

Ray Barbee is on their "legends" squad if I remember correctly, and Nyjah wasn't back on Element until relatively recently. Plus the turn they took when Bam started getting really popular was really awful. Sure they have Tim Tim, Darrell, Muska and Appleyard, but all those HIM heartagram graphics aren't just going to disappear.

- Element trucks
- Element stores
- All the hippie shit
- Mall boards
- Marketing to bros and jocks

The beginning of the Elementality video, in which they try to make it look like they've just been chugging along the same track since 1992 kind of pisses me off. As if Element, even in the late 90's, was anything like the Andy Stone Pepe Martinez days. Fuck that.

I believe colt cannon works for element now. But other than that, Element is pretty shitty as a company imo. I got a free element DVD that talks about founder Johnny Schillereff's life and Element's history (how Hip-hop influenced Underworld element changed to Element: wind, water, fire, earth). Once the "Underworld" was removed, Element became some stupid environmental company that sells skateboards, women's and men's apparel, footwear and became mainstream store at universal citywalk, New York, etc..

i like  how you incorporated ''skateboards'' in the title cause i was assuming it was about bearings .... they got amazing riders but they market to the mainstream thus angering the''core'' skaters. I personally don't really give a fuck about element not like appleyards gonna drop another sorry esque part anyttime soon or ever.

i see how they can be seen as wack, but over here, i rarely see "Bro's and jocks" wear element apparel so its not as blown out.
Elements team contains a lot  of my favorites, you cant go wrong with Levi, Apples, Darrel, Tim tim. and recently nyjah.
im not a nature freak or hippy but i think its cool they plant trees back, i mean why the fuck not? i dont see a reason to hate on them for that.
their wood is ps stixx so i dont see why it would actually suck either and i like most of their graphics.

most of all im just bummed they dont push their team harder. i mean nyjah's the only one with a steady stream of coverage and im dying for footage of the rest of their team.

Yeah, nobody's hating on the team so much- but the company itself just seems geared toward little kids. It just feels like it stops being a skate company outside of the team itself.

That, and anyone who was into already mentioned Underworld back in the day has a historical perspective that the current Element will always be weighed against, and will always be seen as a cheesy knockoff.

Do they still have the boutique in Times Square?

I talked to Colt about it when he first started repping for Element and he said that he was hurt for a while and partying hard and wasn't skating at all and when he was he wouldn't put element stickers on his board or wear their shirts, he basically said he was in the wrong and they waited as long as they could until they had no choice.
Jake Rupp was rumored to be on a gnarly bender and wasn't skating or filming at all.
Tosh is a different story, every account I've heard has Element in the wrong but only those two know what really happened.
The scenario with TK being kicked off sounds like a corporate loophole so he could go back to baker.
I want to hate element but much like many other shitty associations, they have some big pluses on their side. I am still nostalgic for the Reese,Donny, kenny,Markovich,Oconnor era too, and will have a soft spot for this graphic always.

Stranger used to rep Underworld Element.  I wonder how much he groans when someone implies he used to ride for Element and how quick he is to correct them.

This is the first time I have ever posted a comment on Slap, so I hope all goes well. Element skateboards was started by Andy Howell. It was started in Atlanta back in 1992. The first incarnation of the company was called Underworld Element. Andy who was part owner of New Deal skateboards along with Paul Schmitt wanted to start something which he had complete control. He had Rick Ibaseta, Chris Hall, Julian Stranger, Jeff Pang, and himself as the original team. Johnny Schillereff had nothing to do with the original company. He was an am for New Deal at the time and lived in Atlanta and was friends with Andy. He later on became Andy's assistant and helped with the company. Andy was the one who dropped the Underworld from the name of the company added new riders like Pepe Martinez, Andy Stone, and Billy Pepper. After the video Element "Fine Artists" Andy retired from professional skateboarding. Not long after Element went bankrupt and Andy sold all his shares in Giant, New Deal, Element, etc. So the company went back to Paul Schmitt's ownership and Johnny was asked to run it. Johnny Schillereff is the one who changed Elements image for better or worse. He is a nice guy with a good heart and doesn't deserve too much hate. He has to run a business in a cutthroat industry. Basically what I want everyone to know that Andy Howell deserves a lot of respect and it pains me to read these posts without reading his name.

PS wood is shitty now, one of the worst of the big manufacturers. It doesn't come close to standing up to SCM, Chapman, Bareback, etc.

I'd rather buy a Bareback or SCM board that skate a free PS Stix.

Element is to skating as Green Day is to punk rock. The only thing they've really done right is cash in on the trendy side of skateboarding.
