for the past year or so I've been riding 8's without switching it up really and I kinda wanna start riding wider boards. the thing is, flip tricks have never been my strength and recently I've devoted a lot of time to get them better. Have any of you made a switch to larger boards and made it harder for you to do flip tricks?

Yes. It is a trade-off.

you get used to it. i had to do the opposite and go down to a 7.5 ona spare deck. took me about 20 min. to get used to it then i got stoked on how easy it was to do flip tricks. i still ride 8's tho, i just like tha extra space.

i mean, i WILL flip slower but like i said its not like you gotta do your tricks that much different you just gotta flick harder and get your feet out the way a lil more

ive had the opposite, in the last year ive moved from small (7.5ish) to average (8ish)

Before on a smaller board my flip tricks would always vary in rotation speed to i would fuck up the catch alot more regularly, now on a larger board if i was to put in the same ammount of effort id get a slightly slower flipping but more accurate flip which is easier to catch. and as for shuv tricks... very rarely miss them anymore. I havnt even noticed it bieng any harder to get the board to flip either

No!

Back in the days I used to skate 8" wide decks(sometimes a bit smaller to), and now I skate 8,25", and I can still do every fliptrick I could do before. The only difference is that its more stable to do fliptricks down shit

There's a trade off, but you can get used to it.. it's more an issue of finding a size and sticking to it. Personally, I'm back at 7.75, as I was born with elven petite-feet and find smaller/shorter boards a bit easier to control. For what it's worth, different shapes/concaves can fuck things up, too, not just the width.. I switched to a super-flat Krooked deck a couple months ago and it set me back a good two weeks before I got back up to my usual level.

Get trucks that suit the deck, too! Otherwise you'll be kickfloppin it up

As Said Before, The Board Is Heavier And Will Of Course Flip Slower If Given The Same Strength Flick. Personally Though Riding An 8.25-8.5 Has Decreased My Consistency Of Frontside Flips While Increasing My Consistency Of Backside Flips. Could Be Coincidence, Haven't Noticed Much Change In My Other Tricks.

it will throw you off for a little but what doesn't when you switch from the usual? You get back to where you were though, when I made the switch from 7.75/8 to 8.25/8.38, at first I didn't really like it, the board felt slower flipping but after a day or two, i loved it and I never went back. I found that the bigger boards had more control especially when you get the perfect sized trucks to go along with it. I also noticed most tricks have gotten higher when I first started riding the bigger boards like 3 or 4 years ago.

its going to slow down the flip a bit but after a few days of riding you will become used to it and you will more than likely be able to catch shit better be carful with the length of the deck the sure fucks shit up like shuvs and tre flips i went from a 8.5 32'' deck to a 8.6 34'' deck and tre flips felt like i had to jump 6feet over the board bigger when it comes down to it = better !

i made the jump from 7.75 to 8.25 then to 8.5. when i started with the 8 and a quarters i noticed my shit flipped slower but was easier to catch. also it took me like a week to adjust. now if i skate anything smaller than 8.5 i feel like i'm on a ripstick.

I guess it depends on the rider.

I have large feet so I can still manage to get a nice flick on a wider deck.

+ Wider board = more surface area = less toe drag + easier to balance

It's not really harder to flip, you just need to adjust how you do it and foot positioning is a bit different. For example with kickflips I tend to have more of my heel off of the board, and with 360 flips I put my foot about an inch further back on an 8.38 than I do an 8.18.

Side note, just based on a couple comments, I didn't realize that there were still people aside from groms that ride 7.5 boards.

after running a shop for a little bit, you would be surprised...so many people ride 7.62 boards its ridiculous. Atleast down here.

Depends on how it makes you feel with your feet. Its not true that wide boards mess up everyones flip tricks.
Apparently Chris Cole rides an 8.5 but he still somehow can 720 double flip huck.

moving up to an 8.25 never fucked me up a bit

Been skating 8's for as long as I can remember, one day I was hurting for cash and the local shop had an 8.25 on sale for $25, figured I'd give it a go. I lost hardflips completely, and even since switching back to an 8 I can't get them back. It's all personal preference obviously, but for me anyways anything more than an 8 seems to need a serious effort to flip it.

I've been having problems with wide boards lately, so I'll probably be moving down to 8.125s or 8's. my flip tricks are way off.

This was the case for me. There is an adjustment period but I have found that it has only improved how I do my flatground tricks.

I think flip tricks look a lot better on a big board, if you have the power for it. It looks ridiculous when some 90-pound kid is scraping varial heels against the ground on something that looks like a snowboard under their feet.

Been skating strictly 7.75s for about ten years. had a lengthy discussion with a few mates and bowed to pressure and tried an 8". All was good until I realised I lost all my heelflips. Even learned a few things ive been trying for ages, but i do love FS heels so I switched back.

I moved from 8" to 8,5" then back to 8,25" for life. You get so much better control at ollies and grinds and slides. The only flip trick that seemed harder was the tre flip but once i got used to do them they were better lookin. The only throw back is that you get more tired with big boards. I mean i had an 8,5" board with 149 indies and i went back to 8,25" and 139 because i was getting very tired. Now its the perfect fit for me.
