Coming to SF from the UK

No one seemed to answer my question in the SF thread so here we go! Next September i'm having a gap year before University and wanted to go to SF for 2 weeks-1 monthish at some point during the year depending on money. I currently live in England and have never been to California before so I was basically wondering like others above, cheap hotels/hostels near skatespots? nightlife? restaurants? bars? need to start doing a lot of research if i'm going to be going. Any advice would be much appreciated!
