Hmmmm, interesting.  This thread has potential to go somewhere.  I actually don't have anything to add just yet.  You covered it very well.

I will never understand camping outside of supreme overnight in order to get that hot new dunk colorway. Some of those photos were damn awful.

What's unfortunate about this side of skateboarding is that it contributes back to the shops sometimes, not most of the times.
For instance, I do orders and manager product for my local shop. When I'm doing a longboard order, I get tons of shit for it from the rest of my clerks. I don't blame them.

1. Do I want to (personally) order longboards?
No. But, if I have more than 6 customers asking for it a day, I'd be a dumb shop manager if I didn't order them.
2. Have I tried to show these same kids the better, traditional skateboarding side?
Yes, I've wasted many hours trying to convince long board buyers to try our beloved skateboards but kids/college students are stubborn and besides, it's their money so there is only so much I can do.

It's unfortunate that a shop will make a dollar off a long boarder quicker than it will a skater sometimes.

I'm sure there is a larger profit margin on the Long boards right now too, those things are expensive. Plus they are super fucking hot right now, I see them shits everywhere around, like in every town I see at least one kid awkwardly pushing around on them. I've also heard from shop people that when longboarders break a bearing or something, they often come in and just buy a whole new complete.

This is true as all hell. As a shop manager, I seriously have the best intentions. I try to educate any kid that does not know what the fuck he's talking about. Long boarders come in all the time wanting new bearings and buy a whole set instead. This also goes for skaters who are just starting out as well. Clearly, it's more common for those with a larger wallet but even though I could take advantage of them & make that sale, I just throw them a broken-in bearing that somebody else left behind that way they learn something.

Longboarders also have this fascination with getting their boards re-gripped. It's the most nonsensical thing in the world. If they really want it done, we charge them for it.  Grin

just brought a globe cruiser for my daughter and it's cool to step on one again. my first board was the same kind.

also liked the doors video but can understand how it has too much cross over appeal for some to like.

I was looking for some deals online and found Manhattan now has it's own " Longboard Loft NYC" store...

Store looks like a decent size too...but I guess they are selling plenty of these things to make rent. It would also seem with the consumer so uneducated and inexperienced, it's so easy to make them shell out. I don't know any of these brands or labels this place claims to stock...

And another thing - when I'm driving around and I see kids with these things - they are ALWAYS carrying them! I have yet to see anyone actually push or ride on one of these things...

"Combine that kind of inventory with an experienced, knowledgeable staff of ?real skaters? and you walk away with a board that is fined tuned just for YOU!"
