Post-Soviet Russia. It's not really considered a Third-World country, but it's pretty run down. The conditions I lived in pretty much resembled those you would see in a Third-World country. Early 90s there were fucked. So much corruption and poverty; mafia running shit.

You ain't lyin'.  I went to Russia in 1999 for two weeks just for the fuck of it and it was super eye opening.  I was in St. Petersburg and then Russia.  Shit was crazy.  I did see some of the most badass shit in a circus though.  8 horses running around a pillar in a room with a girl RUNNING the opposite way on their backs.  Wild.  I also got wasted with some Russian teens and I think we talked about hip hop for hours.

Dude, I have no doubt.  I am a white American male.  It's like Louis CK says: "You can't even hurt my feelings."  I know how good I have it.  When you pay for a room in Russia, and your room is just 3 tables standing on their side with a shower curtain for a door in a large gymnasium type room, it's pretty eye opening.  I slept with my backpack on and with a luggage lock on the zippers and a boxcutter in my pocket.  I realize that everything I listed sounded pretty awesome, but it's a totally different thing when you're there.  Those were definitely the highlights of a fantastic trip.  The major lowlight was waking up in the middle of the night, forgetting where I was and drinking from the sink and getting sick.  Seeing that their middle class was what we would consider abject poverty was also apparent.

Yeah. When you grow up in that environment you don't think about that too much, though. I knew we were poor, but it wasn't a big deal to me. It kinda makes me appreciate everything I have now a lot more. This is despite the fact that I'm in school and pretty broke by Canadian standards.

Also, throughout my 12 years of living there, I only saw skateboarding once. It was some little kid pushing down the street non-mongo when I was 5 or 6, so that would have to be '94/'95. I honestly had no idea that you could even do tricks on skateboards until I came to Canada and went to school here. At that point I thought skateboards had springs in them or some shit. It's pretty funny thinking about that now.

Yeah, they teach you English from a young age, so it wasn't a big deal, except I wasn't up on the slang or anything, so I probably sounded pretty weird for a bit. Nothing was really difficult for me to get used to, except I was pretty quite at school for a bit, and felt a little excluded, because I wasn't familiar with the way things worked in Canadian schools. When you are a kid, you pick things up pretty quickly, though.
