its a high-budget viral video. get over it. lemme throw in another classic SLAP saying as well "if girl or chocolate did this you'd all say it was legit"
Bullshit. You can't look at these and tell me that don't have a thousand percent more style that that Nike piece of crap.

the lakai clips are good no doubt, but its clearly obvious most of you guys just watched the video with your anti-nike filters and just tried to hate on it. it was a goofy high-budget video with Malto, J.Brock, & Koston skating custom made skate obstacles. im not sayin its the greatest ad of all time but come on now yall aint gotta overreact and make it seem absolutely terrible just because you're butthurt about Nike successfully running their skate program.

The entirety of that video and everything it encompassed really bummed me out. I hope all you Janoski buying fuckers are happy with what "our" lifestyle/sport has turned into.

care to elaborate? i thought the video sucked as well, but you're giving it a little too much credit

I felt really dirty after watching that video. But dirty in a way that a group of jackasses pushed me into mud puddle while they were flopping around in it happily themselves. That video just kind of stunk of everything that's wrong with "skateboarding today" as opposed to skateboarding "back in the day," i.e. before all of these large sponsors were just accepted. Either people just got tired of fighting it, or it's a new mentality amongst the skate masses that don't seem to care what brand is plastered all over their gear. I'm being forced down this ride of lameness when I want no part of it, but my only other option is to quit. If that happens, they've all won.

word. i guess i just found it funny that in 2012, this is the straw that broke your back and ruined your lifestyle/sport. out of curiosity what do you consider back in the day?

I don't know if this video is the straw that broke my back. I'd say it was already broke a few years ago, but they just keep piling more straw on.

I suppose I don't even know what I consider "back in the day" for this instance. I guess any time pre Nike's acceptance in the skate world? I started in the late 80s when you wore whatever shoes you could, but I always dug the elitist 90s when only skaters wore skate shoes. At least then you could tell who was on your side. There were plenty of shoe options in the late 90s/early 00s, and pros were making bank off of them back then, as well. Granted, a lot of those options were horrid looking in my eyes. I never strayed far away from Old Skool Vans, until the first Rowley's came out. I'm pretty much just a bitter old man at this point, so no one has to take my opinion seriously. Not that anyone did in the first place.

The ad is terrible. But take a look at Nike's team, it's filled with highly respected skateboarders that deserve whatever cash Nike is throwing at them. Someone earlier posted a photo of Shaun White saying they could've seen Nike being involved in that, but instead were involved with a pic of Grant Taylor's recent 50/50 on that kink rail. You're absolutely right, THEY COULD HAVE been involved with the whole X-games/Vert aspect of sakteboarding but obviously someone at SB has some vision and integrity about what skateboarding is to skaters now. I would like to reinforce the fact that I didn't like the ad however when you support a team of skaters with that prestige and produce quality shoes that last twice if not three times as long (for me personally) as shoes made by lakai, sole tech or whatever, THEY WILL continue to dominate the market. Now before you get your panties in a bunch and remark that the ony reason that they can do exactly what I just described is because of the corporate dollar, well, you're right, but that's the way it is now, for better or for worse.

when is reebok going to get on this shit, I wanna see some pumps skate style and nike should release more airbag/cell sb's . . .

i get the argument that skateboarding shouldn't be corporate but could anyone still see the likes of penny, muska and koston
on es still? that era is over, time to move on...

The way I see it, you can liken skateboarding to the music industry.

Corporations come in, snatch up some big names, push their shit in your faces. All the while many deserving people/organizations go unnoticed. I'm not saying the skate program at NIKE is shit, but think of all the smaller names and companies that don't have a "fair" shot at shit just cause they're not a corporate conglomerate.

People say core companies need to "step their game up". To that I say, well, it's kind of hard for them to step up when all the money in skateboarding is going to the people who already have it. Running ads, hiring designers and more employees, and getting big-name riders all takes a lot of money.

and it's economics: The division of wealth grows; the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. And it's only going to continue if people lessen their support of the companies who need it the most.

I don't want to sound preachy, and I understand that people really just want to wear and buy whatever the fuck they want because it looks better, lasts longer, makes them skate better, etc., and I can understand that. At the same time, though, again you can liken it to buy foreign vs domestic cars. If there is a foreign and domestic car that are relatively equal, all things considered, then surely you should buy domestic just to put money in the hands of people who will put it to better use.

i remember the reebok/dgk shoe that was made of a fucking basketball.  dotted orange rubber.

as someone who has no problem with nike's involvement in skateboarding whatsoever, this video was fucking stupid. their attempts at being tongue-in-cheek went down in flames.  it also made me hate koston a little bit more.

lakai's ad game is on point.  nike does best when they leave humor out of it.

i dunno about "integrity" but after they already (literally) got shat on with their last attempt at selling shoes to skaters they defs changed up their game plan market to the "underground".

still think that that move was all part of their master plan though; one that we are only recently seeing come to fruition (not only selling to skateshops anymore, these cheesy commercials, skate shoes that aren't labelled SB anymore etc.). i never have and never will be a fan but they definitely did their homework this time to get so many people backing them...

First of all, I addressed the fact that Nike has the corporate dollar in my post, everyone knows that and I don't think anybody is arguing that it is a good thing. Second of all I do agree that the music industry is a really good comparison but hopefully it doesn't get that bad in skateboarding (although it likely will). Lastly I think I get what you mean about the buying domestic analogy but you might want to choose your words more carefully you come off sounding like foreigners dont know how to manage money.

Whatever dudes it wasn't that bad and the skating was fucking rad. Its obviously nike making fun of its self a little bit, poking fun at how technologically advanced they get when dealing with something as simple as a shoe, how over the top they go, and how most skateboarders are the opposite. They were skating in a target parking lot in the beginning having a great time for gods sake. Its a joke.
I'm tired of hearing all the fuck nike fuck this fuck that corpo bull shit. I don't buy nikes either but guess what, every damn shoe is made in china/vietnam/etc and every core brand is a BUSINESS. I'm waiting for the day I can get some good skate shoes, owned by skaters, MADE IN THE FUCKING USA. I'm fucked for now but I've got hope.
PS whats up with the new emerica ad campaign 'made in emerica?'

I'm guessing they are referring to to the riders?

America and Emerica are spelled differently, and thus refer to different things.

As much as I'd love that...

I don't know if I'd pay $100 for skate shoes, cause that's what they'd surely cost
