About a week ago I started getting really bad anxiety out of the blue and tried to skate to help cope with it but it didnt help at all which surprised me. Skating wasnt as enjoyable as I thought it would be and didnt help it at all. Going to the gym helped but skating didnt, which is weird because I enjoy skating 1000 times more than the gym. Has anyone else had anxiety and found that skating didnt help? Im just surprised because doing something I enjoy a lot didnt help clear my head.

It always helps me if I have a really good session or land a new trick.

If you've been skateboarding while being in a certain mood for the past few years skating when you're in a different mood will fuck with your flow.

I'm going through some stressful family stuff and I can't focus on skateboarding. I'll go skate and get pissed I can't land something and I know the entire time I'm skating that it's because I need to deal with stuff.

Anxiety is funky shit, don't be afraid of it.

For me it usually means I need be alone with no distractions and think about things that make me uncomfortable.

skating actually helps my anxiety and helps me stay sober. i don't really try tricks anymore but if i feel an attack coming ill just push down the street. it's really relaxing especially late night skates.

Went through some rough shit two years back (don't want to go into too much detail, but it was some shit that left me traumatized, left me with anxiety, and had me getting only 2-3 hours of sleep per day for a good month or two straight) and skating was one of the only things that helped. It really helped me get my mind off things. Try to skate with friends too as much as you can, it helps more to get your mind off things compared to skating alone. Nothing beats a good sesh where everyone is having fun and feeding off each others energy.

Anxiety and skating is weird.  If you have an off day of skating it will only add to it.  Going to the gym actually made sense,  it's not like lifting weights or running is like landing a trick.  You don't really fuck it up, you're just expending that nervous energy.

exercising releases endorphins and stuff, so the gym part makes sense.

maybe you should skate harder and not worry so much about landing all your tricks perfect. I do some of my best skating when I'm not super focused or worried about landing everything perfectly

i seem to have good sessions right after i have a fight with one of my parents or my girlfriend. in that whole "i don't give a FUCK" attitude, let's go for broke and get high as fuck tonight. but i don't really do flip tricks when i skate, just ollies and rotations. stuff you don't need too much coordination for.

Anxiety cam be a good thing some time or a bitch, I have it bad so I'm medded for it now, so that kind of takes care of it but I wouldn't suggest it as a first route by any means because the side effects/trying to get off of em can be hell. I never used to have it, and when I did I'd try to relax somehow, but for me if I tried to skate all anxietied out it wouldn't work, mind would just be flying with thoughts and feeling weird and not focusing at all on skating and what I'm doing on my board.
The one thing I do know is if Im fine and Im skating and I get an anxiety, like something bads going to happen feeling, its actually a good warning for me, because in the times Ive ignored that gut feeling Ive fucked myself up bad skating, then being pissed at myself for not listening to my gut. Everyones different man, if skating or the gym don't work try to find something that does work for you, meditation, drawing, anything

i have general anxiety disorder the seretonin in my head is messed up or something, they put me on some medication called effexor which is a shitty medication, it helps don't get me wrong, but you can't have a beer or anything while on it and if you ever want to stop taking it its super hard it'll take months to ween your body off it, but skating does help me a lot when focusing on a trick id forget about everything else except the trick

Skateboarding blanks my mind. Never had a problem like yours. Skateboarding needs your focus 100% so it erases everything else it always worked for me. If i cant skate some hardcore punk record does the trick too.

if you are getting anxiety while skating take a breather. go ride a bicycle. go for a walk to somewhere you have never been. find some freight train tracks and walk on em for days.

the only time i found myself panicking while skating would be when my life outside of skating was experiencing troubles (relationships, job).

sometimes it's best to just step away from your normal surroundings and get lost.

Yeah that all makes sense. I just need to not have any expectations as far as tricks I wanna land if i know my head isnt in its right place. Not as many flip tricks just cruisin 180s and half cabs.

exactly. anytime i'm feeling shitty about my skating, i resort to my go-to line: no comply 180, fakie ollie something, one or two fakie shoves until my board is facing the right direction again, half cab or full cab, revert if i have to, no comply 180 revert, and then repeat. doing that simple flatground line over and over again is the most relaxing thing in the world to me. yesterday i was getting ridiculously frustrated trying bigspins over a hip (i landed 3 eventually  Grin), and i made sure to do that line in between every bigspin attempt. doing that in-between line was (and usually is) the only thing keeping me from trying to break my board over my head.

i'm rambling to avoid doing schoolwork, but i guess my point is that sticking to simple tricks is a great way to keep yourself relaxed. that's all. hope this anxiety thing is just a quick phase for you.

skateboarding > xanax

anxiety is a symptom of a problem, not a problem in itself.
the reason it feels as bad as it does is to force your body to address the root cause.
don't kill the messenger.
address the root cause.
then get sparked on some black flag and let loose on your board.
shit has worked for me better than any drug out there.

Truth be told, skating usually makes everything worse for me. I usually spend my time hating myself and being scared to try new things. The reason why I still skate is because I'm addicted to it and I live for the few euphoric days out of the month when everything feels great on the board. I'm a total basket case.

It would really suck to go skating to get rid of your shitty mood and then have a pebble get caught under your wheel and make you slam. That shit is already a buzzkill when you're in a good mood.

Ha usually I get a good laugh out of hitting rocks (unless im cruising down a hill), I like to see how far the rock slides on the ground after i hit it.

Anxiety usually makes skateboarding harder. For me, the over thinking that accompanies anxiety usually translates into my skateboarding. Most of the times it makes it more difficult, especially with flip tricks (for some reason I think more when I'm flipping my board). The whole "I don't give a fuck" thing seems more like pent up anger rather than anxiety. When you release all that anger though, it can end up being really fun, just as long as you're not stupid enough to wind up with an injury or something. You're usually not thinking about getting hurt, but when it's something that you'll be feeling the next couple of days it's no fun.

Skateboarding is my happy place.  I hate to skate upset.  If I really need to burn negative energy I'll go for a run.  But usually I just sit at home and sulk.

I'm going to guess it has to do with having a vested interest in skateboarding.....you care about it and have a history with it.....going to the GM is just going to the gym.....

I think it all depends on the kind of skating that you're doing. If you're goin for tricks and other tech shit that may take time to land, I can see it just adding to the nerves.

I love skateboarding but recently i've found that riding my skateboard is my favorite part, not stressing on tricks  that i've always had a hard time doing. My favorite sessions are when I grab my board with the 60mm wheels and cruise through neighborhoods or through the city.  Nothing about cruising around ever frustrates me.  I got a perfect setup right now that crushes through rocks and gravel and lets me pop up curbs and jump down some stairs every now and then.  Guaranteed good time.

skateboarding cures my anxiety better than xanax, weed, alcohol, anything. and i get A LOT of anxiety. when i skate i have 100% no thoughts whatsoever its perfect. i used have problems with anxiety and basically the best thing to do is just face it head on and  not be afraid of your thoughts.
