Reminds me of Ryan Gallants part in transworld first love.  I know there are plenty of people out there like this who consider skateboarding to be only something you can do up until you are an adult.  I'm turning 23 this june and for the last couple years I've noticed how different it feels to cruise the streets...as a child, no one gave a shit, but I notice more and more people staring as if to say "isn't he a bit old for that?".  It really doesn't bother me, but it is something I've become aware of.  It's sad that we live in a world like this.  These people annoy the fuck out of me.  Personally I plan to skate until I'm unable to, and even then I will probably still cruise every now and then.  Just wondering what all your feelings were on this particular issue.

I was about to call this thread a wash and move on, then I typed "oldest skateboarder" into youtube and came up on this gem.

In my country skateboarding is not that popular and skateboarding after 18 seems strange to most of the people here.  Actually when i introduce myself to someone and i tell them that i skate most people think that i am a retard. The funny thing is that people who get shocked about someone who skates at an age over 20 are the dipshits with no hobbies at all, trapped in a routine they hate. I dont really think that those people dont like old skaters i am quite sure that they hate the fact that we have the fun while they are unhappy with their lives.

One time some old classmate saw me in my hometown cruising and he asked me somehow ironically "you still do this?" and i told him "I think its way more fun than the every day waste of time in cafeterias or bars" and somehow his face changed and i saw that he agreed and that he was sad with his routine.

As for the blog post.... If a grown man on a skatebard ruins your week you have some heavy psychological problems man but i think that the writer is just a drama queen anyway.

Most people I meet around my age(30) think it's funny I still skate, but they also wonder why I look like I'm 20. Tufty is on point about unhappy people-working at UPS made me realize how lucky I am to have something like skating in my life.

nailed it.

it's also kind of ironic how this guy bags on adults doing what he perceives as a child's activity, given his own apparent emotional immaturity. one of the biggest skills i picked up in the course of my 20s was the ability to let shit roll off my back, not get angry or offended for no reason. that's the biggest thing separating me from the depressed, awkward, self-conscious teenager most of us were. i always see people starting these maddox-esque "grinds my gears" type sites, essentially making shitlists covered with an attempted layer of funny to cover it up, failing all the way. it's a decent way of venting, but it's self perpetuating, and leads to a lot of misery. sucks for him, i suppose.

Couldn't care what anyone else thinks about what I'm doing.  And if I had to care, I'd rather them think I am lame.  If the common person thinks you're uncool, I say you're pretty cool.

Legions of men over 30 who couldn't run twenty yards to save their lives will sit down to watch football, eat garbage, and generally hasten the degeneration of their bodies, and that is perfectly acceptable behavior for an adult American male. Skateboarding, though, whoa, that's kids' stuff. Roll Eyes

Conformity and skateboarding are opposing forces.  Attitudes like the blogger's (who probably landed a job that he hates, went out and put a down payment on a VW Jetta and suddenly thinks he has the world by the balls) just strengthen the cause.

Fuck 'em, they're missing out.

Your average older person who doesn't know shit only thinks it's acceptable for Tony Hawk to skate at an older age. It literally goes back to Tony Hawk probably 9 outta 10 times when your average person conjures up the most basic image of skateboarding is in their head. Anyone else feel me on that?

Even in the 5 Boro Trailer for Join or Die - @ 0:43

Even the youngest kid knows - "You ain't Tony Hawk"

My friend always had a good take on it when we'd go skating through town to get pizza - those people are just jealous you're coordinated enough to skate along without killing yourself. The later at night you'd go, the more insults and bullshit you'll take due to people being more drunk - "do a kickflip" or the infamous "skate or die". The best is the drunken "I used to skate" guy late at the pizza place who tries a kickflip all drunk and eats shit in his nice collared shirt and stupid dress shoes.

Bonus - Here's a sick fight scene from the pizza place I'm talking about:

i feel like the attitude of being too old for things is starting to diminish. i guess it kinda helps living in the city, where theres a bunch of people older than me doing things far kookier than skating. maybe im lucky, but i encounter more people who are stoked that you still have an activity you enjoy, than ones with the "too old for that" mentality

99% of people who feed that "Aren't you too old to be skating?" line are easily shut up by this response: "Aren't you too fat too be criticizing somebody's method of exercise?"
I always took "get a job" to be another way of saying "I gave up my soul when I started working, why haven't you? You must be failing somewhere, because I can't be the one blowing it, fun is supposed to end after school ends."

The simple fact is that as you get older you get more stress in your life and your metabolism slows down, meaning skateboarding actually is a better idea as you get older, not worse. I'm so much happier hitting a spot for an hour after work than hitting the working stiff happy hour.
As long as I have a need to release stress, a need to exercise, and the ability to do so, I will skate.

Another thing is that skateboarding is a relatively new sport, especially in terms of its participation levels. I feel like in 10-15 years seeing an adult on a skateboard will be like seeing an adult on a bike. People still just aren't used to it, and if you are my age, that's nothing new. The same people calling me a weirdo for skating when I was young are the ones calling me a weirdo for still skating now. Most adults who skate started as a kid and just never quit. The next few generations after us have so many more kids who skate, and as they grow, more will keep skating, and people will learn to deal with it. At that point I will give another rant about how skating has gotten too mainstream.
