There is/was a park about a 10 min skate from my house. The one featured in a oiam episode, under the manhattan bridge. LES park. Skating there was a health hazard, pretty much. If you cut or scrape yourself, it wouldn't heal for a month and had a really good chance of getting infected. Thats how dirty and grimey it really was. I said "was" because Nike is kicking down around $400,000 and working with a top urban planning/architecture firm to completely renovate and even expand this place. If I ever had a problem with Nike, i definitely don't now.

Steve Rodriguez applied for the grant from Nike and pretty much made this happen. Yes, I too think he had a very poor showing on oiam, but because of him there will be a brand new, $400,000 park a 10 minute skate from my apartment within the next 2 months. I checked out the plans on-line and it looks like it will also be lit/partially lit. Hell fucking yes.

I have no problem supporting Nike and 5-boro, in fact, quite the opposite.
Where did you see the plans? link??

Saw a slightly different version somewhere, too, but probably just a different angle. Google search "Coleman oval skatepark renovations" for more info.

That's their brainwashing, er, I mean "marketing" plan at work. Good for them for putting 1% of the SB line revenue back into skateboarding.  To state the obvious, even though it's been said a thousand times by a thousand other people: They do it 'cause they know it helps get customers, not because they have big hearts, they have a big profit margin to maintain, but that's just my take, it's not my place to care what you buy and there's no need to try to justify your ethics, just don't forget that the ones profiting the most don't care about you or about skateboarding, they care about keeping the shareholders happy and their 6 figure bonuses. If I was the idealist type who needs a reason to support someone or something though, it would be based on the heart and soul behind whatever entity, not how much money it can fork out. At the risk of sounding pretentious, my ethics aren't for sale.

Rad that you're getting your park overhauled, that's good stuff. Congrats. I'm not trying to jump your shit, and if you said something like "I like their shoes because they're comfy and last a long time" I wouldn't say anything at all.

There's no need for me to try to justify anything, particularly not my ethics.

I love skateboarding. They are replacing the old, particularly shitty, park with a nice new one. I'm going to skate it and love it. That's where it starts and ends. However, in the process, if I need a new pair of shoes, Nike will not be ruled out...

Just curious... What's your skate shoe of choice?

That neighborhood had some fun, weird obstacles that got bulldozed this winter, the chinatown bank got 'benched, and the banks are hosting construction equipment for the next few years.  That's cool that the park down there might stop smelling like urine, briefly, but I'm not really feeling the design.  Giant half-pipe with obstacles in the bottom?  Genius.  Clearly award winning.  Were there even any public hearings on this?

Since crappy designs are clearly the norm for skateparks, I'm going to try to get over my disappointment, and focus my energies into hoping that the city doesn't use this as an excuse not to give us back the banks when they finish working on the bridge.

The Janoski

The Koston and the new box that has sb left out.

This was a 6.0 shoe but now it just says Nike and comes with a lunarlon insole and the same box as the sbs and the sole of this shoe is the exact same thing as the koston

I hear you, totally. However, since what you said is most likely true, I'm trying to focus on the positive...

1) rough tar flat-ground being replaced by smooth, and clean cement.

2) normal ledges, not every single ledge being at an angle or a weird shape

3) a couple rails that seem to be flat, not kinked in the middle when trail in question isn't long enough to be kinked

4) the quarter pipes are supposed to be around 4 feet, which is accessible to me

5) it will not be fenced off, and seems to HAVE LIGHTS, or at least be semi-lit

6) no more compost zone, probably the surce of the dirt, and definitely the source of most of the smell

Having said that, I was in Austin, TX for work last week, and was able to check out House Park. Now, that I sa fucking incredibl e skate park. Now, I'm not hoping for anything that good but compared to what LES park was, anything will be a huge improvement, Nike or not.

I've never really been a fan of that pro model deli meat. I just buy blank meat, it's so much cheaper, and all meat is made the same, anyway. Once I bought some Shane O'Neil meat, shit was stale, bro.

GAWD DAYAMMIT

dude so not  cool, we need pro signature sandwich meats to be sold in core delis only, not at every safeway/super target/costco

I dunno, dude.

controversial opinion: chain delis > local core delis

motherfuckers at the mom and pop deli on the corner are always vibing me when I walk in. I feel so pressured to go home with a big stack of ham or some shit. Sometimes a dude just wants to gander at the beef. And I feel like the dudes at the core delis always secretly despise me when I ask for honey mustard, like it's blasphemy to put it on corned beef.

At subway, I get to have it my way, and the girls at the counter are cute and friendly

...and you're surprised that they sell Nikes at the mall?

no i think he is surprised that nike dropped the "sb" line which at one point nike was against selling them at mall shops trying to only sell em in "core" shops.. so now the nike sb's people used to go to smaller skate shops to buy the newest dunks can simply buy them from their local zumiez.
You think Nike is "against" anything but making less money? They never opposed it, they put in SB and told this whole story about only selling SB's in skate shops, but that was just to get the approval of real skateboarders to get the operation rooted. Its been marketing the whole time! Plenty of us have been fucking shouting it, only to have ignorant kids who like the dunk colorways come up with all sorts of bullshit reasons they thought nike was legitimate. But many of us have always known, and will continue to know that Nike is bad for skating.
The fact is, its been obvious that it was the plan since the start, but because of pieces of shit from the x-games generation buying into it, Nike now has a foothold in skateboarding to exploit it as they please, while running legit companies out of business. All it took was one generation with no sense of community to blow it all out. Thanks you stupid spoiled pieces of shit.

Oh, and that kid who lives in fucking Manhattan and needs Nike to build him a better park because he thinks it will result in less booboos- do you really think people are supposed to respect that perspective? You come off like such a stupid and spoiled bitch. You clearly suck. Stop posting and reexamine how lame you are. I hope the ghost of Harold Hunter comes up and whoops your ass for acting like there's nowhere to skate in New York at night.

Fuckin' kids. No hope for this generation of skaters. SMDH.

I never thought of nike sb, as so much special compared to the regular program.

The sb line has more padding , better stichting and that's it.

I buy the nike shoes, because they simply hold up longer compared to other brands.

I never bought nikes, but - they're shoes. who gives a flying fuck.
vans have been sold in malls since god knows when.
i feel bad for the skater-owned shoe companies who have lost out because they made their move before the big sports companies ever bit, but the thing is - there is nothing special about shoes 'designed for skating' except the associations they have with pros and the culture in general. you can skate in more or less any shoe. there are shoe designs older than skateboarding itself which perform as well as those of the original skater owned shoe brands.

Well, that's good for you, cause as Nike grows there will be less and less other brands.

Also, people act like Nikes are god's gift to skateboarding, and how every other core shoes blows apart after 2 sessions. Give me a fucking break.

You're missing the point, though.

Andrew Reynolds said it in one of his interviews: With skater-owned companies, the people behind the scenes put it all all the line. They invest so much into their business and put in so much work. And when times get tough, you know they're the people who are going to do all they can to keep their company afloat.

For corporations, it's just another business venture. When shit get's rough, they pull the plug. People who work for them, SKATERS INCLUDED, get dropped and fucked over. If we really care about skateboarding and the people who put in work to improve the skateboard industry/community in a positive way, we should always prefer to support companies owned and run by skaters

Okay, I just think you have a flawed perspective in regards to the way 'skater owned' shoe companies are run. Etnies was the first skater owned shoe company - now it's run like this http://www.soletechnology.com/
They also pull the plug. Remember the eS shutdown?
Every company that has room for expansion and selfish growth will seek it.
A product like a skate shoe can be marketed to non-skaters too. A skateboard can't.

As long as the skaterowned companies are not able to produce good shoes I'll stick with nike or adidas.

The shoes are still produced in Asia, but simply hold up better.

I see no reason why to buy shoes only from certain companies, only because they are skaterowned.

Quality is for me an important part of my buying decisions.

And the skaterowned companies are not producing their shoes in the US, where production could be better.

No they follow the same route as the big ones, chasing after the bigger margins and the money.

By producing their shoes "Made in Vagina" or any other cheap country.
