I think it's easier to buy shoes online if you know what you like.  I have job now so I try to buy hard goods and DVD's at skate shops at least.  I especially like to buy local videos when visiting a new shop.  I go to Uprise or Yeah usually.

I love the idea of supporting core shops. But Zumiez has the same shit and waaaay cheaper, plus their clearance section of shoes is better than the core shops normal seletion. Why the fuck would i blow more money at a core shop, just to keep it real and support the scene when im eating ramen at home. Hate away all you bitches living with yer parents. Wait til you pay yer own rent and have kids to support. I will buy a pair of vans from a thrift store before going to an overpriced core shop.

Ridiculous inability to see the bigger picture, like Zumiez doesn't sponsor local skaters or put on local events.

And the price thing is bullshit, unless you're talking about shit like the shitty ATM shit.

I've honestly never shopped at a Zumiez, so I looked at prices online, which should be the same as in store:

Pro Decks: $51.95-$64.95 (P2)
Wheels: $25-$35 and up.
T-shirts: $21.95-$34.95 ($35 for a stupid Diamond Supply tee!?!)
Trucks: $18.50-$24.95 each.

All that seems pretty close to most independent skate shops prices.

However, I can go to my local and get smaller companies that Zumiez doesn't carry, or get a shop deck made by SCM. Either way for less money that a regular deck at Zumiez I can get a better board.

I have been out of the parents house for well over a decade, I'm the sole breadwinner in my family, and I'm pretty broke. Still, when the price difference is less than a trip to taco bell and can be made up with 2 days of change tossed in a drawer, I'd rather spend a couple dollars more to help keep a little independent shop that is cool and does good things for the local community in business, instead of going to what's essentially the WalMart of skate shops (Zumiez).

Antisocial is where it's at. Plus those boards that Folk started making for them are really good.

i must say that, if you're really picky about what shoes you want, vancouver is a difficult place to find what you want. i generally find myself going to bellingham or further down to those outlet places and picking up two or three pairs of shoes at a time. i'm not sure when it begun but, i can not get myself to skate a shoe unless it is black with a white sole, accompanied by black laces preferably. being an 8.5 also usually means that if i do by some odd chance find a shoe i like up here, it's already gone.

I think pretty much any decent shop is going to have prices at least slightly lower than those you posted for Zumiez. Plus, the shop is just a cool place to hang out at and if you've been on the scene a decent shop should give you a little discount.

I'd also like to say I've never seen a Zumiez before... but homie posting about how they change the bitches out made it seem kinda awesome (not to shop at)

I'm in San Diego so there's a shit ton of shops, but I only like one of them. That shop is Route 44. I don't usually shop there because I can get pretty steep discounts at a couple chain stores. I still like to throw some business their way when I have the cash because they're cool people, but I simply can't afford to shop there more often.

I've never been to Yeah!. Uprise is a lot easier for me to get to and if I went anywhere else in Chicago, I'd feel like I was cheating on them.

EDIT: I guess Modest is closer to my parent's house in the suburbs, but I've always been kind of disappointed with their selection. So I'd rather just hop on the train and go to Uprise since it's a difference of maybe 15-20 mins.

Yeah Vancouver sucks for shoes, I often have to settle for random shit that seems like it might be ok just because my current skate shoes are falling apart. Sounds like you have the right idea.
