I'm so sick of my shitty diet. I eat too much fast food and I am starting to just feel sluggish and not energized. I am not fat or anything but I know it is time for a change before I start seeing any permanent effects. I have started cooking more and more and I am looking for good, healthy recipes. Any Pals out there know about cooking good, healthy food? Please share your recipes here!

It's really not hard to find "healthy recipes".. The question is are you actually willing to eat smaller portions, whole wheat everything, fruits, veggies, fish and poultry instead of red meat, etc..

I eat an apple an day, stay active, try to eat and drink other healthy stuff.. but it's scary how addicted I am to shitty food that tastes delicious.  I went to the grocery store and most of the stuff I wanted to buy was pure sodium.  I really don't want diabetes.

I'd also recommend going through the "what are you eating right now" thread..  You'll probably get some good ideas in there.

My problem is the classic poor mans problem though, being so broke it is often easier to buy something shitty and cheap than something nutritious and actually good for me.

It's actually cheaper to cook at home. I spent $8, got sandwich meat, bread, red onions, and a cucumber. $8 at a fast food place is gone in one sitting. The food I bought from the market lasted me 2 days. Beans and rice are also very cheap. So you can save money and eat good. Quit drinking soda. Try to make one meal that has no meat. I'm trying to do that at work, have my lunch meatless.

Buy frozen vegetables. They retain their nutrition and you can have them much longer than fresh vegetables. They're cheap too, about a dollar or two per bag. Depending how much you eat, and if you're eating alone, they last me for two meals.

Here are some relatively healthy, cheap meals: http://artofmanliness.com/2011/09/27/the-recession-special-5-low-cost-family-friendly-meals/ .

You can always mess around to make them healthier. I'm thinking of stealing my sister's juicer since she doesn't use it and replacing a meal a day with vegetable/fruit juice since I saw that Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary.

Getting your day started off right helps you maintain a bit of consistency throughout the rest of the day. Yogurt parfaits or fruit smoothies with toast and coffee is how I try to kick it off. After that I kinda just fill in the blanks, try and cook if Im home, soups and sandwiches, some basic recipes for dinner. I used to eat a lot of deep fried shit, so cutting that out as much as possible made a noticeable difference in how I felt.

about a year ago i cut out fast food from every night after work to maybe once every couple months. that alone made me feel about 100 times better.

lately i've been "dieting", for about 2 months. not because im fat, but because i am 25 and drink a lot of beer. my new routine is pretty easy and simple and cheap. Odwalla fruit smoothie for breakfast, pack of crackers a couple hours later, a banana in there somewhere, maybe some peanuts or something little late afternoon, and then when i get off work i eat whatever the hell i want and drink as much beer as i want. in a month i feel about 100 times better now that i eat fruit, and i went from 190 to 180 (im 6'5 so 180 is good for me).

space out a bunch of fruit and shit like that during the day and then reward yourself at night. its working for me.

Except there's little evidence to support that claim except for that guy's book.

From http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/g-free-diet :

" 'There is nothing magical about eliminating gluten that will improve your health or enhance weight loss unless you are intolerant to gluten,' says Dee Sandquist, MS, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association who has celiac disease."

"So, for example, instead of making breads, cookies, or cakes with wheat flour, you substitute a gluten-free grain and continue to enjoy baked goods. But be warned: Avoiding gluten can result in nutrient deficiencies if you're not careful.

'Studies have shown that people following a gluten-free diet, especially when relying heavily on commercially prepared gluten-free foods, can have diets low in iron, fiber, B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D,' says celiac expert Shelley Case, RD....Alternative health practitioners, personal trainers, and celebrities are jumping on the gluten-free bandwagon like it is a trend and recommending it for all the wrong reasons," says Case, author of Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide.

Eliminating gluten from the diet is the only form of medical therapy available to correct celiac disease, Sandquist notes.  'It is not a trend, fad, or weight loss diet but the essential diet for life and the only treatment available for individuals with gluten intolerance,' she says.

Case points out that a gluten-free diet is not ideal for weight loss because many processed gluten-free foods contain more sugar, fat, carbs, and calories than their gluten-containing counterparts. She also notes what she calls errors in the book regarding foods, ingredients, and its reference to celiac disease as an allergy.

"The inaccuracies in the book can be dangerous," she says. "For example, anyone who starts a gluten-free diet can actually prevent or delay an accurate diagnosis because gluten must be present to confirm the diagnosis."

Also inaccurate is the book's advice to avoid topical beauty and hygiene products containing gluten; gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin."

Just avoid that shit then.  That's what I do.  I'm not substituting flours.  I just don't eat baked goods of any sort.  I'm asian.  I eat rice.

Eat small meals/healthy snacks staggered an even time apart throughout the day.eat lots of greens.eat everything fresh(tastes better and cheaper than frozen, not neccasarily  healthier). Don't eat anything past 7 pm if you can avoid it. Pay attention to your body, eat a lot of fibre, and high protein/low-fat shit like some kinds of yogurt or cottage cheese. Try and exercise right before you eat, helps speed up your metabolism.

That being said I barely do any of these and find it super hard, all comes down to willpower in the end. Don't be a bitch completely, if people are having pizza and you want it, just have one piece instead of five.4 ur health.

there's a huge diabetes problem in cambodia cause all there is to eat is Rice. or so they say. 187th poorest country in the world...

I don't know about dieting but making changes in diet or what you eat is something that takes time. I stick with a mostly veg diet. It's not the best when I'm in school, mostly veggie burritos, boca burgers, rice/beans, eggs, and some chicken/fish but it's alright and i feel great. I drink a ton of water and try to snack on cashews or something else from the bulk section at the grocer.  I go through periods where I eat a shit ton of pizza but it's all good. good luck.

Yes, all I eat is a mound of rice at every meal because that's all that I afford on my meager military salary so I will contract diabetes like the cambodians.  Please.

anyone know of good healthy snacks? im more of a "grazer" when it comes to eating i just munch on stuff all throughout the day, with 1 or 2 meals inbetween. aside from fruit, what are some good goto snacks to have around the house? things thatll satisfy certain cravings but are still relatively healthy to eat ona regular basis

I decided first off to stop drinking soda and it all snowballed from there.  I slowly weened myself off of the crack laced sodium filled fast food lifestyle and started to eat at home more.  Not to mention the amount of fuckin money ive saved since going from maybe 5 times a week to once every 2 weeks or so.  Now I eat alot of fruits and veggies.  Yogurt and granola, PB&J on crackers, baked fish, grilled chicken, salads with alittle less dressing. I try to stay away from alot of flour stuff.   I dunno, it really isn't that hard if you just start to look down and actually analyze what your ingesting.  Eating healthier is simply the smart thing to do.

My problem is the classic poor mans problem though, being so broke it is often easier to buy something shitty and cheap than something nutritious and actually good for me.

i'm not sure how expensive produce is in the states, but up in canada, it's relatively cheap.

i always used to think, fuck i only have five bucks, i may as well get some value menu shit at mcdonald's or something when i was in a rush, but realistically buying an apple, few celery sticks, carrots and a banana costs me just over a dollar up here. it's really difficult to actually get used to doing but, after powering through a week or two of putting a lot of fresh produce into your diet, you will notice a huge difference in your energy level and just mood in general.

i also but this water jug that hold 2.3 litres and i try to make sure i down one of those every day, i don't think enough people really rely on water as their first natural drink selection, but they should. although i will still break down occasionally, and take down a bag of chips in one go or some other junky shit but, i'm working on it.

Just the rice noodles in vegetarian pho.  I've been eating a whole lot of beans, greens, veggies, sprouts, nuts, berries, oatmeal, Greek yogurt, corn, fruits, rice (no more than one portion per meal), and fermented soy (miso and natto) .  Nutritional yeast is great flavoring too.

real talk:

raw oats, almonds, frozen blueberries (put them in hot water for a minute or so to soften them up) and add low fat milk (soy if you're not down with dairy for whatever reason).  i just eat it straight up no cooking.  delicious. and cheap.

eat that for breakfast, lunch, dinner, whatever.  so good and keeps you going without making you feel crumby.  i eat that at 6am and i am good to go until 1230 or so when lunch time comes around.

I usually take a big pan, slice some chicken into small squares and start cooking it with 2 chopped onions, some chili and garlic. Then i throw in chopped carrots, sliced broccoli, peppers of some sort and bamboo shoots. Use any other type of vegetables you find suiting. Just keep it all on the pan til it looks good. Super easy and fast to cook, cheap ingredients and healthy.

I still enjoy the double cheeseburgers way too much to quit it for real though!
