The title of this thread is a bit misleading.
It isn't misleading when it is quoted word for word.

I like how Mike V referred to himself as "the hottest street skater at the time"
Because he....was?
Were you around in the time period he was referring?
Yeah, and nobody gave a shit about Mike 'boneless manual' Vallely in my town. We loved Hensley and the whole H-Street crew.
Also, this talk about how "the Questionable video ruined fun skating" is the same shit I heard when H-Street's Hokus Pokus video came out

Exactly, Mike V. says people said "fuck this, too hard" when they saw Questionable.
That is some real bullshit revisionist history.

Mike V was first known for street plants then for running through a graveyard in Public Domain with a limp wrist and then an obsession with elephants.
He redeemed himself with his barnyard board, but that wasn't even his idea.
If they had a draft of the "hottest street skater at the time" he would have been picked in the 4th or 5th round.

Can you all elaborate on this "death mentality" cus my friends and I were always stoked on the progression and never heard anyone thinking that videos with sick skating was somehow destroying skating.
Even the die hard pool skaters recognized that Video Days, Rubbish Heap, Shackle Me Not, Hokus Pokus, Questionable etc. was sick even if it was on a different level.
There is no need for Mike V. to try to piss on what was happening and how stoked the vast majority of skaters were when they first saw those videos.

The title of this thread is a bit misleading.
Mike is saying that when someone who has been skating for fun and challenging themselves at their own pace saw a video
like that, it was very intimidating and intense, as much as it was amazing and awesome.
He makes a valid point.
Also, this is important:
If you weren't actually skating when that video came out, your opinion on his statements are kind of ridiculous.
It's like a 20 year old telling a 'Nam vet that The Vietnam War was intense because I watched Full Metal Jacket.
i dont really see how that has validity unless you were thinking about skating career wise. If Mike V's skating is self expression as he claims(or at least implies with corny poetry) why would he feel the need to measure himself against others?

I understand his viewpoint. Were you guys around in skating then? It was very much a cliquey boys club. You skate one way, or you get dogged for it. The attitude came with the goofy boy pants and small wheels. It doesn't make sense in hindsight, but it's something you had to be there for to understand.
So you're saying you give a fuck that people criticize the way you skate? If you and Mike V really are on the skating as an "art form" kick, then why would either of you give a shit what anybody says about anything you do. I don't have to "be there" to understand that Mike V is one of the biggest walking contradictions on the face of the planet.
You realize that people got beat up, thrown in trash cans or the fountain for being "kooks" (a kook being something completely subjective and fluid from day to day) back at EMB in 1990? Yes, if you were not part of the cool kids club you got shat upon.
Mike V may be controversial, but he's making a valid point.
This is totally irrelevant and not what the dude was talking about. He is not making a valid point.

after reading this thread, i understand that, but Mike v just comes across as a butthurt prick in this because hes lamenting his time at the top and is just being a hater that everyone's popping their board now and he cant. and if you explain it that way it makes sense, but i think youre putting words in his mouth as his original comments had none of this context on being kooked, he just hates that people are popping and flipping and hes still diddling his twat in a pogo.

Mike Vallely was there at some point as the "young guard" took over in for e.g. Questionable?
He was part of the progression in one way or another.

No one disputes that.
It is his ludicrous idea that Plan B's Questionable video turned people off to skating because when they saw it they said "fuck it, too hard."
That is some real bullshit because every real skater at the time was so stoked to see what the fuck the mind blowing shit they put down on film.
That some professional skateboarders got left in the dust has been happening since the dawn of skateboarding.
Mike V. trying to play it off as something else is dishonest and deep down he knows it.

If Mike V's thesis was correct then no one would have started skating in the '80s.
They would have seen Jeff Phillips, Christian Hosoi, Gator, and Tony Hawk and said "fuck it, too hard!"
Vert skating was way more inaccessible to the average kid than anything in the early 90's street videos.

Well, except for the fact that it did. I saw it myself at the time. Lots of friends seeing technical skating moving so fast, along
with skater groups judging others and vibing based upon whether you could triple kickflip or not.

Obviously the people that quit skating due to Questionable discouraging them are not going to chime in on a skateboarding forum and state their piece. Naturally, they don't know anything about this present day conversation. I believe the impetus behind Mike V's comment comes from that Larry Ransom documentary on his random skate crew in Podunk, Wherever from back in the day. In it, when a few of the guys start talking about why they quit, they cite bad attitudes in skating, as well as Questionable, as reasons. Do I agree with it? No. Do I agree with Mike V? Not necessarily. I merely stated that I
understood
his viewpoint. None of the new videos ever stopped me from continuing to place one end of a parking block on another and doing railslides all afternoon until I learned kickflips a few years later.

What about how he says that Plan B were jocks and his type of skating was from a more "artistic" mindset? How pompous is he to claim that there was no art or artistry from early Plan B, but that he was the real artist skater back then?!? I had no idea that Mike V was an art critic or was able to read the minds of fellow skaters to understand how they approached skateboarding.
Mike V. please pull the foot out of your mouth and get back to playing minor league hockey.

You guys are all fucking morons. Your dissing Mike V on the wrong point this time. Most of you weren't around back then for it, and the reason is SKATEBOARDING FELL OFF the same year questionable came out. There is a clear correlation. Shops closing, companies going out of business, pros getting minimum wage, the industry was in a state of chaos at that point, and Mike V isn't the only person to say skateboarding's move towards more technical skating and less speed wasn't the greatest thing for attracting new participants and that type of skating was a major turn off to the mainstream. People who already skated could appreciate it, but an average kid couldn't. I remember the shit talking people would give you for skating "you just sit in a parking lot all day trying to flip the board on to curbs, get a life!"
Yes, Mike V. is lame
Yes, Questionable was an important video for skateboarding's technical progression.
Still though, his point is completely valid, no matter how much anybody here who didn't skate back then can appreciate that video now.
And really, people here didn't know Mike V. was one of the biggest stars of skateboarding as the 90's began? Really? To me that means you don't really even know a damn thing about World Industries Y'all need to stop shit talking and start listening and learning or you'll always be stupid.
And no, I'm not going to accept any argument from a kid who wasn't there about why I am wrong, its not even debatable. I wasn't debating I was educating the shit talking morons.

I don't exactly love Vallely but what he said wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be. Some of the heavy hitters of the pre-questionable era, guys like Mike V, Hensley, Dressen, Tom Knox, Jim Thiebaud, Frankie Hill, Ron Allen, Donger, etc., just had talents that didn't match what became the standard: handrails and uber-tech. Anyone who was there during the transition saw it happen and saw their role models become obsolete to the industry. In this interview he was talking about that, not saying the Plan B video turned kids away from skating, it spawned new expectations and set a bar that a lot of guys couldn't meet. The first Zero video had a similar effect, but on a smaller scale. These videos also made kids skate differently and resulted in huge progressive surges.
I don't see how anyone who wasn't there can act like they know what it was like, you all can have opinions but talking like you know all about it would be like me telling an old hippy what I think of the 60's or talking to old punk rockers about how todays [fake ass] scene is just as rad as the late 70's. Or fuck, its as stupid as me acting like I know how it is to be a teenager right now. I'm not there now and a lot of you weren't there then, thats just how it is. As skaters we saw skating enter a dark time while completely changing. He's just relating his interpretation and his experience.
However, his skating isn't more "artistic," thats bullshit, its just how he does things, and the jock/athletic turn that skating took was not during the Questionable times of 92-93 so he's off point there. That started around '95 (first X Games) and slowly grew into what it is today. It's stupid popular so too many people do it and they're not humbled from being societal outcasts, now they're actually "cooler" for being skateboarders, so there's more room for bad attitudes and less need for unity between skaters. There's a reason people are nostalgic about the early 90's that's hard to understand. Skating is still the best thing in the world but it's a different beast.

Yes, others were around back then, and they agree with me. Its not an opinion either, skateboarding fell the fuck off in the early 90's, and only a kid with no fucking perspective would even bother questioning it.
Other people's opinions can be valid, but yours never are.

You weren't the only one who was around back then so stop acting like your are.

Hensley, Dressen, Tom Knox, Jim Thiebaud, Frankie Hill, Ron Allen, and Donger aren't running their mouths embarrassing themselves.
They understand their role in the progression of skateboarding and are totally fine with it.

Skateboarding fell the fuck off for totally different reasons.
Plan B kept its progression going.
I can't wait for another inevitable downturn to get rid of all of you pretenders.

You guys are all fucking morons.
Took the words right out of my mouth.
I was about to say that some of you really have like a 2nd grade comprehension of the English language, but then I realized most of the idiotic posts in this thread are from sluggers, who can pretty much always be counted on to be clueless as fuck.
