Longboarder yes, but it's still fucked up. I guess his head was completely split open.

Glad to see the driver getting charged with murder. Hopefully makes others think twice before getting aggressive with a skateboarder, biker, etc. Too many stories like this in Toronto.

fuck man. shit makes you think twice about skating in the fuckin street. you have no fuckin idea of who is behind the wheel at any moment.  I'm more scared of somebody just plain not seeing me and smashing into me.  Hell it's happened twice to me who am i kidding?? but then an angry cabbie just fuckin hitting you?? that shit could easily happen to.

not really sure what to think about this. its awful if its intentional, obviously, but the amount of under experienced longboarders skating around toronto is ridiculous. i think when you grow up skateboarding(betting most of us spent about a year without leaving the front of our houses/local parking lots) you can kinda respect the danger and think about things a little more when youre skating. where as most longboarders seem to go immediately to the bike lane when they get a board. shit, i really only skate on busy roads like this one if the sidewalk is rammed with people.

i feel like a piece of shit bringing this up now, but between this and the other longboarder death a few months ago(on the same street), legal crack downs cant be too far off. RIP

I started reading, and when I saw 'second degree murder,' and I was like, "what?"

Goes without saying, that cabbie must have been pretty fucked in the head to do something like that intentionally.

So, out of respect for the cabbie and the justice system, we should refrain from jumping to conclusions or making any allegations?

I agree

Cabbies are the fucking worst. Most people will stop to avoid a skateboarder, I swear I've seen cabs speed up multiple times.

I mean if it was intentional, then fuck this dude, but if it was an accident murder seems pretty harsh. Maybe manslaughter? Fuck, either way it's terrible that he died. RIP man. Shit sucks

completely. we've grown up and got to know how, when, and where to skate on a street... a busy one at that. where longboarders just pick it up in their mid 20's and assume it's like a bike and you can go along with traffic in fast high volume areas.

what happened is a tragedy but if longboarders keep getting hit then they're going to make it a rule to wear helmets.

it's also common to see them bombing into oncoming traffic or in the middle of the road, pushing mongo, in sandals, and thinks nothing of it. i can't really argue the longboard hate on here. also zurg mentioned to me earlier how a skateboarder knows how to fall where a longboarder most likely wouldn't.

it was intentional but i'm sure he wasn't trying to do what he did. regardless, fuck that cab driver.

All I'm saying is none of us were there and we really have no idea what happened; all we have right now are claims from a few select individuals. I mean, you're right, but It's not really our job to be making those allegations.

He will be tried for second-degree murder - alleging that it was intentional.

If the jury comes to the verdict it was completely unintentional, then he'd probably get stuck with manslaughter, or whatever

The general consensus from the witnesses sounds like the cabbie knew what he was doing...people saw him yelling at him and then running him over....doesn't sound like an accident at all

I feel bad for him and his family who have to deal with the tragedy, but I feel the same way as Zurg....some kind of distinction really needs to be made between longboarders and skateboarders before people start trying to pass crazy laws around skateboarding

Once I was in a cab and the driver was so awesome. He told us "skate til you cant walk, smoke as much weed as you want, fuck every bitch you can, but dont do hard drugs". I realize this is somewhat unrelated ,  RIP to that dude.

There's no way they'd ever make a legal distinction between longboards and skateboards. They're not that "with it".

RIP though, and I don't really get what the taxi count was trying to do? Knock him off his board? With a car?? What the fuck?

If I should ever get run down by someone in a car... promise me none of you will tell the paper, "He got along with everyone."  Make up something cool, like "I can't believe he fell off his board.  Dude was a shredder.  Just blows my mind he didn't wallie that shit.  Seen the dude boneless over stuff twice that size."

HAHA deffinatley, this should be how you know it was a skater not a longboarder in these kinds of things.

Still this is fucked up, cabbie deserves to be put away if hes not gonna think about his actions.

that said, he as on a longboard, wich is hard to stop, in downtown toronto, tha tis full of stop and go traffic all day.

Im not standing up for the cab drivier in any way, but this urban longboard craze, and longboarding in general is just retarded, people who have no idea whats going on just cruising around on these death traps feelign so good about themselves and their carbon footprint.

Went to Uni in Toronto, traffic is nutso, and awful cab drivers.  I remember one night our cabbie showed up a good 40 minutes late, and was driving super erradically, I would put money he was high on crack.

On a completely unrelated note, I've never seen anyone who has ever stepped on a board in their life refer to a skater as a "boarder."  Who started this thread??

would you call a longboarder a skater?

..do longboarders call themselves skaters, for that matter? that's not even a rhetorical question, i seriously wanna know.

Toronto media are intermingling "skateboard" and "longboard" in every news story. They don't see a difference. Although one longboarder was interviewed on CBC, and he claimed that skateboards are more dangerous in traffic, because longboarders go in straight lines while skaters are "always slashing around".

Someone needs to tell that jackhole that we're not snowboarders, and we don't "slash".

That's a damn good question.  I have no idea.  The only longboarders I know are either also skaters or skated when they were younger, so they're "skaters" by definition, I guess.  Anyone?

This is a big part of it for sure. I don't live in Toronto, but I'm there at least twice a week and I rarely skate up there (for transportation) because shit like this seemed inevitable from the get-go.  I can't tell you the number of times I've seen some longboarder bail while crossing at a busy intersection because he or she couldn't make it over the streetcar tracks
