Tom Gabel, leader of Florida punk band Against Me!, has revealed to Rolling Stone that she plans to begin living as a woman. Gabel will take the name Laura Jane Grace, in addition to altering her body through hormones and treatments.

According to Rolling Stone, Gabel has "dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years."

The origins behind Gabel's new name are hinted at in the lyrics of Against Me!'s song "The Ocean":

"And if I could have chosen,/ I would have been born a woman,/ My mother once told me she would have named me Laura,/ I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her."

Gabel told Rolling Stone,

"I'm going to have embarrassing moments, and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about - is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

I hate people that don't understand psychology. People who desire to become a transgendered feel trapped. They can't help it. They will go through those surgeries to become a man or woman, which actually helps them. There have been cases where these thoughts and feelings have been rooted since childhood. You may not like what they do, but at least tolerate their choices.

What you and a lot of people don't understand is that gender images are so warped beyond genitalia. We attribute clothing, attitude, body mannerisms, and other arbitrary things that really don't have any connection to anatomy to certain genders, and it's more complicated than than black and white. Some people just don't feel comfortable in the gender attributes their told to perform, and choose to change.

And in the case of human anatomy, a lot of transgender people are born with hormone production abnormal for their genitalia, like increased estrogen for males and increased testosterone for females.

Also, surgery isn't the ultimate process for a lot of transgender people. Most of them just take hormone supplements and dress and act differently, without intentions of getting surgery.
