^That's why I like it so much... there's so much that is open for discussion and it makes it that much more entertaining.

I thought one of the cool elements of the film was the ambiguity of the Engineers intentions. If we encountered an alien intelligence there's no assurance its motivations would make sense to us - that was part of the horror of Lovecraftian stuff and I think that's a factor at play in this movie too.

because the reviewers seemed stupid or because the questions were good? just curious what scifi movies live up to the standards being put out in this thread for prometheus? i'd love to see them.

Personally I thought this movie was a blast and any loose ends or plot holes didn't distract me from enjoying it a boat load. I absolutely loathe 3D, but I saw it in 3D anyways and it was awesome. Would definitely watch this in the theater again.

Red Letter Media, who did the reviews on Star Wars, Avatar and Indiana Jones are pretty fair but also accurate in their critique of this movie.
I just think the vid is solid because it brings up a lot of questions I had when walking out of the theatre.
I went and saw Prometheus again last night, I got some free promotional tickets, not in 3D this time.
As Sleazy said, David does at one point say "In order to create life, one must destroy it" or something a long those lines.
I am interested to see the 30 minutes of footage that had been taken out, apparently on the BluRay this will be featured. Theres no way that they could leave this many plot holes on purpose.

i really think it was an enjoyable film but feels like people feel like the film was too dumb for them when only looking at it from a superficial plot point of view without really digging into things at all. visually it was amazing and i thought i was very intense and like that it had lots of elements that you could consider and discuss. we've been talking about it a lot at work and some of the unanswered questions that annoy some are frequent topics of conversation.
-> what was the opening scene all about?
= (thematic purpose) prometheus was the god that gave men the power of fire and was punished for this by having his stomach cut open and liver eaten by birds each day. this theme of self sacrafice permeates the film (self surgery, ending scene, the archiologist that asked to be torched, etc...) and is first introduced in the first scene.
= (literal purpose) this is the start of life on earth which is created by one of the engineers drinking the black slime.
-> why were the engineers coming back to kill everyone
= many possible reasons assuming they were coming to kill. 1) you must kill to create 2) the feel that their creation was a failure (jesus theory) 3) maybe we are cattle or weapons for them
= maybe they weren't coming to kill.
-> why was the old guy in the film
= reinforcing the theme of self sacrafice over sacraficing others and establishing a connection between corporate greed and this anti-virtue
-> why did they do the "your my father" thing
= reinforcing the theme of self sacrafice over sacraficing others and establishing a connection between corporate greed and this anti-virtue by showing that weyland (or corporations) would even risk their own to preserve themselves. also helps frame his daughters cold charater.
-> why did the main charater fly off towards the engineers after knowing that they were trying to kill humans
= she didn't know they were trying to kill humans and it again reinforces the self sacrifice theme as the main charater was after knowledge that would help mankind and willing to sacrific herself for it.
-> why was the surgery machine set to man when a woman owned it
= because it was for her dad. she had to awkwardly explain why she had it when she didn't need it.
-> why did they run in a straigh line from the ship that was falling
= this is such a stupid picky gripe, if this logic was true then no one would ever get killed by running from a train after staling their car. people panic when they are about to die. additionally if you want to be a picky smart ass about subtle details then the correct diss would have been how does a spaceship crash and then roll in a straight line instead of just crashing and smashing to bits. i thought this was one of the sickest scenes in the film personally.
-> what were the engineers running from
= well what were the engineers in the first alien film? would that film have been better if we knew? this is a loose end for the sequel. i'd guess the slim mutated something and created some kind of monster.

Saw it last night. I really couldn't get into it. I think the theories and mystery are way more fun to read about than the movie was to watch. The acting and CGI overkill were both too much for me. All the alien life forms were dope, though. The C-section scene was great and really reminiscent of the feeling of the original Alien moves.
The father line, and when the guy "howled" when he let his scanners go almost made me walk out of the movie theater.
Stringer Bell (I can't remember his real name) had it right, I think, when he said the reason the base/ships were stored in such a remote planet was that the "oil" was way to volatile and powerful to be kept around populations. It was created, or discovered, to create the ultimate weapons, feeding off hosts, mutating their strongest attributes, and moving on to mutate again and again. Hyper- evolution. The original movies were played that Aliens were the perfect killing "machine"(animal), but maybe the lore is being brought full circle in that they were actually created to make the perfect weapons of mass destruction. An unstoppable army.
I don't know, I'm just guessing here.

Why does Fassbender want to infect Halloway? I mean he clearly already has the intention to do it before having the conversation at the pool table it just doesn't make sense really unless we're to believe that Weyland told him when he remarks "try harder". If Weyland wants to stop death why infect Halloway one of the smartest members on board and one of the few people besides Shaw and David who knew the most about the engineers.
He knew He and Shaw were/were going to sleep together, so an infected Halloway would produce a hybrid baby, playing shaw as the host. And it worked.

I have a big love hate thing with this movie, but I dig how the engineers look like old Greek and Roman statues today, even though I think most of them were actually painted originally.

I noticed that as well, especially with the profiles. They all had faces that belonged on old coins. Visually the movie was amazing, but yeah, there was a lot of holes and some pointless parts. Not a fan of them using age make up on Guy Pearce, they should have just gone with an older actor.

The Guy Pearce old man make up was pretty over the top. All I could think about were the Jackass skits. I guess everyone was supposed to have watched the Weyland viral video to understand it a little bit better. On that note, I really like the David commercial. The Weyland logo on the fingerprint was pretty awesome haha.
