Here's a related arcticle about a new-ish sculpture had to get repainted and installed differently from people skating it, must have cost PAFA some dough.  It's kind of a dumb thing to skate anyways.  The "moat of uneven paving stones"  won't be stopping anyone, I walked by there today and it just looks like different colored bricks.

That paint drop thing sucked to skate anyways.

Holy fuck, the new punishment for skating any monument or public art is at max a $2000 fine and 90 days in jail. That shit is insane.

Oldenberg has been phoning it in for the past 20 years, living off the reputation he built in the 60s through the 80s.  He also did the huge clothespin across from City Hall, I like that one.

1) its pretty naive of the artist (and curator) to think that an orange fiberglas blob can sit on a sidewalk without getting 'used' by skateboarders, kids or the general public. if his art is only meant to be looked at he should arrange it that way. very few artists dictate how people are meant to perceive their art, this guys is apparently one of those few...

2) $2000!! holy shit!

With all seriousness though, it's fucked up.
Though it not going to stop skating in Philly, it will just make skateboarding smarter.

Because the war on drugs wasn't stupid enough, Philly had to come up with an even dumber way to ensure that our prison population continues to expand. Its not like Philly doesn't have any other crime, and nobody is filling up the jail cells anyway, lets create a new class of criminal to lock away.
Fucking fascists.
You want to fine, do it all you want, but to say the government has the right to take your life away for rolling on some public art is taking it way too far.

Oh, and that sculpture is the stupidest pile of shit (both figuratively and literally) I have ever seen. It doesn't look like a glob of soft serve Ice cream, it looks like the kind of shit a dog takes after eating wet food for the first time. It would be hillarious to spraypaint "the ugly piece of shit is supposed to be art." It would also be fun to take it to court and claim that the pile of shit isn't actually a public monument, and is too stupid to be considered art.

The Schuylkill Banks park is not meant to be just a skatepark but a park for all.  Why not save a ton of money and make LOVE not just park but a park for all, including skateboarders.

Will they throw another fit in a few months when it's covered with tags, stickers, and bum piss or are skaters the preferred target?

That ugly piece of shit is taking up space and is costing the city more maney than it's worth.

And here we all thought that former Mayor Street was our number 1 enemy. Mayor Nutter made it seem like he was cool with us and really didnt give a shit about us skating. Over the past few months that has changed drastically. LOVE for the past few months has been pretty good as far as kids getting to go in there and skate for a couple hours on end, but that has been cut down a lot. Not only that, but they've completely demolished the skater-friendly side of City Hall, mainly due to the "remodel" after all those Occupy dullards made it completely atrocious. I'm sick of all the ass backwards politics of that city.

Why, unintentional pun?

I appreciate the early soft sculpture stuff, The Store, proposed monuments that look like genitalia and stuff like that.  But all of his gigantic public works of mundane things that have been produced over the past couple decades seem so tired, just a way to make money of his good early-career ideas.  He's definitely not alone in this career model, many established artists rest on their laurels.

And this potential $2000 fine doesn't worry me at all.  There's so much shit to skate in this town that's not a monument or public art, and the police are chill everywhere but the big spots like LOVE and govt buildings.

once again, that stupid orange blob is really the only skateable piece of art in center city, so its gonna be tough for them to enforce. also in 2009 they decriminalized pot possession up to 30 grams and the prison population has decreased 11% in just a few years. im not sure if many people here have skated philly lately, bc the cops dont enforce any laws that a skateboarder typically breaks on a regular basis. i got 1 skateboarding ticket at municipal in 3 years of skating. 40+ cops have been arrested in the past 2-3 years alone. trust me, theyre handling their own crooked shit. its a warzone up there, but its far from fascism. nobody gives a fuck about anything in philadelphia.
