It is amazing how the mega ramp has regressed without Danny and Bob competing. The qualifiers were entirely boring.

Danny had an interesting take on the little kids and their perspective:

"In the world of skateboarding that I live in and what's on my agenda and how I'm trying to progress skateboarding, it's probably a little less of that vert mentality and a lot more of the street mentality. You can't do 1080s and 900s on the street. Most of the things that I'm trying to do on my skateboard right now are universal things, maneuvers you can do on all terrains, things you can apply everywhere. I don't see a 1080 fitting in anywhere else than on the Mega quarterpipe or on a vert ramp.

I think it's awesome that Tom [Schaar] and Mitchie [Brusco] can do these moves but I also think that since they're growing up in this era, they're almost shortchanged in a sense that they're growing up and seeing what's spotlighted to them as important or seeing what's pointed out to them as benchmarks for getting notoriety& and missing some of the fundamentals that come before some of these maneuvers.

Again, I think Tom's an awesome skateboarder. He's very talented, and his 1080 is a very, very awesome thing. But there's a lot more to skateboarding than 1080s and 900s."

The X-Games street course looks pretty sick though...

I admit I was always interested to watch and see what all of the vert veterans would throw down on the Mega every summer.  Now, with 80% of the field being kids less than half my age, who I've never heard of, I have no interest whatsoever, even though they may be throwing down tougher tricks.  It was more of watching guys I already knew adapt to the ramp, than the ramp itself.  imho.

Looking forward to seeing this universal maneuver applied to a ditch spot.

There used to be a cool young kid doing kickflip 50-50s on the bar, but for whatever reason they got rid of it.

Do we really need to see another backside 360 to a McTwist?

I watched some of that last night for the first time in a while and was actually kind of amazed when an 11 year old, apparently named after Mick Jagger, did a backflip first try then he later tried a no grab 360 flip. But after watching a few runs I kind of became desensitized to the absurd size of the ramp it just became a circus act. Not quite Bob's part in Extremely Sorry but what the hell does he expect? Little kid street skaters mostly only do big ollies and boardslides.

As far as 900s go, on such a big ramp isn't it just kind of the next 540? Dudes used to always do 540s in vert comps.

It was cool when Bob and Danny first did it, for the sake of it being done, but otherwise-fuck the mega-rump. Big ass gap jumps are what snowboarding is for.

Oh right their tricks aren't a cool as yours are and you need to let the world know it.  If he was a real man those little hits to his ego would drive him to wake up one morning extra early, go out there, and shut them down by doing their tricks better than they can.  OR he could just give them props, even if he can;t do those tricks.  I bet he tried though and gave up.  Probably whines to to his wife or something.  Just can't get that extra rotation, honey... bah whatever.  I am Dany way I will do an interview and remind the world of my skills.  That will show them.  I will be subtle and backhanded, and yes, the world to bow down to the one and only skateboarding champion of the entire existence of man. DANNY WAY.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Anyone else remember the bit of controversy surrounding Danny when he went pro? The old dogs at the time, while respecting his bag of tricks, also took issue with his age. I guess a lot of that had to do with the way pros came up back then (entering and ranking in certain contests, etc) as opposed to now. It's like it's come full circle or something.

Because they learned to skate by jumping into foam pads which is no where near the experience the vast majority of us had while learning how to skate.

Why is Bob not competing this year?

hes hurt, but he pre qualified for the finals so he still may compete.

xgames continues to act like having kids skate is a big deal... mega ramp is pretty boring to watch except for a few dudes, like bob, danny, ueda(i thought ueda was killing it) & jake brown especially if he gets that no grab 720. THEY NEED THE FUCKING RAIL. and box. also there's "games of skate" in the xgames now

more interestingly. SUPERPARK IS GONNA BE SICK AS FUCK!

I went to the qualifiers live, just because it was down the street, and I figured seeing the mega in person would be pretty amazing, and not something you see everyday. I didn't realize that Jake Brown and Lincoln Ueda would be the only people I recognized. It was still pretty cool, though the trick selection was monotonous.
One thing to note- while the little kids were spinning like fucking tornadoes, they really weren't going that high. The people that really impressed me were the dudes who were getting as high as they could off of the quarterpipe- and those were always the older guys. There was one kid who rode for birdhouse who was a little older (like young 20s I think?) and he was doing like 20 foot high super inverted Mctwists, like the kind that almost look like full flips. That shit was cool.
But yeah, I was really disappointed not to see Bob or Danny.
Another random thing, after the contest was over, it was kind of open over by the megaramp, so I walked right up to it, and its pretty fucking nuts, but the funny thing was that those like 11-15 year old kids were all playing around by the ramp, and they were total kids. It was really weird to see them being normal kids acting like kids. I don't know what I expected them to act like, but it was interesting. The kids themselves weren't worth hating on, maybe the vicarious living moms who hug each other and nearly cry everytime their son does a 900 are though.
Sidenote- that Jagger kid who did the backflip and was going for the 360 flip- the announcer said his family owns and runs and gymnastics and skate camp (maybe woodward?) so he basically has been training for this type of shit like a Chinese gymnast.

Also, I found out afterwards, if you want to see the x-games for free and are in LA, apparently you can go to the Ritz Carleton across the street, go to the 3rd floor pool lounge (free and open to all until sundown) and apparently you can see whatever you want for free from there.

Danny Way is being a bitter old fart. That dude had been chasing the 900 for years until he just finally gave up on it.

He even had a bullshit/not landed 900 at the end of a Santa Cruz video in 1989 @3:14

Having been around and skating when Risk It was released I don't think anyone thought he landed it (as they'd have put the footage in if it had been a make)  but it was more to show how fucking close he was to it.

Hawk did the same at the end of a vid a few years later as well if I recall.  I don't think either of those trying it knew just how hard it was getting that last few % of the trick.

I'm not saying he's not bitter about it now, and the fact that everyone thought him and colin back in the day were just kids doing tricks without the power and style of the big boys (for the most part) surely isn't lost on him (unless he's even thicker than we give him credit for being).

that's interesting.  i bet you would have to be a guest at Ritz Carleton to go to the pool lounge though, no?

i know what you mean about kids acting like kids.  i remember seeing that little 7 year old ripper at venice (when he was like 5) ripping the huge bowl there, doing huge airs and lip slides .   then he goes to his dad holding his crotch and says "daddy i have to go pee pee" and he's wearing a Thomas the Train shirt.  i couldn't reconcile that that was the same person ripping the shit out of a gigantic bowl
