it's the truth, though. i live in the DC metro area and let me tell you, there are some places in DC where you just should not go, ever. it's the city with the largest wealth gap in the US. pretty fucked, but i love skating dc. most interesting spots on the east coast

it's the truth, though. i live in the DC metro area and let me tell you, there are some places in DC where you just should not go, ever. it's the city with the largest wealth gap in the US. pretty fucked, but i love skating dc. most interesting spots on the east coast

if you don't live in the district your perspective is easily distorted. it is segregated, yes. but there is nothing remotely close to "ghettos" blocks away from the white house. last time i went back to DC it's the most gentrified and sanitized it has ever been (even coming into town via new york ave down through H street which is the new adams morgan evidently) and i lived there for 6 years and skated downtown frequently in the mid 90's when MLK library (top 10 east coast spots ever) was still there.

the older you get the more you realize of subjective "ghetto" is. decrepit suburbs in PG county is where the real shit show is around the beltway. it's just lame to paint inaccurate portrayals of cities.

scariest aspect of DC is the cops. most of the federal related police live way out in PW county and have more of a redneck mentality--therefor having no connection with the the communities they "protect". i've never been subjected to the abuse of power like park police and federal police have exhibited there. seems to have chilled out slightly though judging by this clip. after 911 it was on some george orwell novel ish.

Not sure if you're under the assumption that im a white suburb kid that thinks anything majority black is automaticly ghetto or something. My comments are based off the things ive seen.  The times i've been to dc i saw some hood shit, it is what it is. Not ragging on the city because i do like the area.

Even though I went to Pulaski first when i was about 11, MLK was my first taste of real East Coast street skateboarding at 14.  Amazing ledges for an entire block...but everything about MLK was a little bit more rough. That part of town wasn't cleaned up yet and that alley was pretty cutty. More cracks in the ground, broken glass, bums and their piss/feces.    There wasn't a fucking Urban Outfitters a block away like there is now.  But after the 411 metrospective, that spot was all I could think about...and I'm grateful that I got to witness dudes like Andy Stone, Tucci, Greg Harris, Igei, Bruce Vlk and Daryl Vaugh shred that place up and down.  Now it's a fucking road.   I'm gonna dig up some old photos from that place and put them up.

False...

There are no ghettos 2 blocks from the white house you have to drive 10 mins to reach one, and many of the best spots are in NE and SE. All those spots they skated in their are pointless you get kicked out within minutes, you actually have less problems skating in the ghettos. b-more has super gnarly ghettos and when I skated there a few times the locals brought us water and invited us to their cook outs and shit...

Anyway the main reason not to live in DC is th cost and the traffic.

There was even natural barley grind poles and different textured granite ledges there and some elements that ever quite got enough exposure. Definitive east coast environment. Cities were hurting then which was ironically amazing for street skateboarding.

I think it's dope they're still skating downtown and saying fuck it but it's a misrepresentation of the daily operation there.

Does "roboto" still ride for birdhouse? Fools part in the beginning was beyond slept on.

This part of DC is a bust, they got lucky on this particular day. Shaw is in the so called "ghetto" and yet I've never had a problem skating there or the surrounding areas. The real DC gems are in SE and NE and new spots are popping up all the time. A lot of people go to DC and miss out on the good spots by just skating this area with only Potbellies, Pulaski, and Courthouse. Just cruise around near shaw/ the new maloof park and you're bound to find something that is fun to skate and not a bust.

Yeah, he does. Glad you liked that part.  Murdercapital and I worked on the filming and editing on that one.  He is about to put out a new Throw-away part...and shortly after that he will have a part dropping in the D.C./Baltimore based video "Belly of the Beast".  He's also filming for the new Birdhouse vid that's in the works.
