smoking isn't really a big deal for me. I can usually smoke for weeks (finals, drinking benders) and stop for weeks or longer. It's never been a long standing habit. I enjoy smoking but i enjoy lung capacity more, you know?
I recently started hanging out with a girl who is a heavy smoker though and i find myself smoking more. It kind of sucks.
why bother smoking then, man? for real. if you're not hooked and causally do it, it's pointless and a waste of money. smoke a cigar if you like the act of smoking or get a pipe or something. i'm assuming your a cigarette smoker when drinking, etc. i may be wrong and admit that.
the "here and there" thing comes habitual, dude. (in regards to cigarettes) it just works like that unfortunately. otherwise i think you may be in denial about being a smoker. not gonna get preachy on your shit, but if you're not getting cravings or anything, just don't bother with it and save yourself some health and time.

this guy is right. my mom stopped smoking for about 4-5 years until she started goin on with this one dude. at first it was just "lemme get a puff real quick" while taking the dogs out and eventually over time she did that shit more & more was totally addicted again. even long after they broke up she was still on the shit. sooo many of my friends smoke cigs and thats just some shit im sorta against. not that im on some judgemental type shit but i see it as something not even worth getting into. if you dont have those cravings yet do yourself a favor and dont smoke again. even if yo girl try to get you to do it just say no & outright refuse to light one. shell admire the fact you actually stood your ground so thats a bonus as well. gotta keep ya breathing right when you get in dem jeans!

Cold turkey! Just push through it. Cravings only last for 3-5 mins. Sunflower seeds make a great replacement.

point is cigarettes are mentally and physically addictive, we all start out as social smokers, and think we have it under control, then you are addicteed and hate smoking, and smoke more because of it.
you can claim a stronger will than others, but in the end nicotine will hav eyou addicted just like the rest of us.

I was a smoker for 20 years until a month ago. I finally got tired of the bronchial infections I was getting 1-2 times a year. I have tried patches and nicotine gum in the past with no success. I went cold turkey this time around. It is the only way to break free from nicotine addiction.
There are meds that help get past the cravings if you need them. I have heard Chantix helps. The side effects might be a bit crazy though.

this shit works. no matter how much you smoke. just read it all, and once you finish the book you'll soon have a revelation and never want to smoke again.
Just read a synopsis on this book. The guy smoked 100 cigarettes a day. How in the hell is that even possible?! Smoking had to be his full time job more or less.
he was an accountant and lit cigarettes off previous ones

it's okay to hate but you need to apply all hate evenly and fairly.

I used to smoke a lot, but I've cut back to doing it just every now and then now.
I always say I'm gonna stop altogether, but I can never make it past the two week mark. It's hard when all the homies you skate with smoke and are always offering cigarettes.

i smoked for 17-18 years before i quit, pretty much a pack a day from 15 -28 years old, anyone can do it, do it for yourself, its the best change you can make for yourself.

I'm ashamed of how many skaters smoke. It's really disproportionate compared to other activities. Young bucks at the spot/park ask me to buy them smokes at least twice a week. I've smoked about 20 cigs in my life. My dad smoked until I was five or so. I remember hating the smell of his car and our house when I was a kid.

What's up dudes. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I quit about 4 months ago after a few years of pretty heavy smoking, and definitely agree that cold turkey is the only way to go. As mentioned before, it definitely helps to not hang out with people that smoke and to not party at all - a lot of my friends that skate smoke, but luckily (unluckily in any other context) for me I tore my ACL and was way out of the game when I committed to quitting, so I didn't have those constant opportunities for pre-, mid-, and post-session smokes.
I also agree that the first three days are by far the hardest. You'll get annoyed with everything. After a week it was gravy for me, though. The only thing I still miss is a cig with coffee.
Also, this sounds kinda cheesy and ridiculous, but I carry a list in my wallet of the reasons why I quit. It's pretty overwhelming how quickly you can fill up a Word document with reasons why smoking sucks, if you're being honest with yourself.

Wow, forgot about this one.
I haven't smoked in a while, since school let out anyways. Like I wrote up there, most of the time, I enjoy using my lungs too much. I haven't been drinking either. When I've active (cycling 25+ miles/day, running a few in the AM, and practicing yoga a few days a week), I have absolutely no desire to smoke or get hammered. I dropped that chick that I mentioned as well, a while ago. Chain smoking, whisky drinking, and not telling me about no birth control just isn't my bag.

I finally quit after a few years a week ago today. It feels good, I'm still kind of out of it sometimes and going into the second day was kind of rough with heavy sweating for no reason.. but nothing too bad. For some reason I kind of turned the left over temptation into some sick amusement. I'll taunt myself with them when I feel the need to have one but I just can't break it. I always get reminded of the feeling of smoking when I don't need one which I always hated, So I guess that's a good thing.
What's weird is just stopping something I've built my day around. I would think about quitting and get slightly nervous and feel like I couldn't do it, then on some random day I stopped. I didn't even have it planned or anything, I ended up surprising myself. I know it's only been a week and have a way to go, but I want this to be my first and last time.

I found it super hard to quit, smoked for like 2 years and enjoyed it, like choosing the different types of tobaccos and shit, I was really into that..then I got a pretty harsh bronchitis, smoked less and less then I pretty much quit one day..It's been one year and a half ago so I'm stoked on it, the first months I still smoked weed every now and then, then stopped that too..kinda miss it sometimes but whatever, I only do it for health, I'd spend 15 $ a pack if it wasn't harmful, I just like the act and shit..

For the people trying to quit, I know it may sound silly but I started doing that Insanity workout thing 2 days ago and I don't want to smoke anymore because it made me realize how shitty my lungs and heart were becoming. It's helping me alot so it may be something to consider. That and if I feel the need to smoke I go for a walk or a jog or something instead of doing an hours worth of excercise.

My old roommate pretty much did the same thing, and he was coughing up the gnarliest phlegm at all hours of the day. Made me more sure that I didn't want to be smoking that shit

I've managed to cut down over the last few months in the very least. I was at around 2 packs a day and now I smoke a bit less than a pack a day. I have been real focused on quitting a lot of other things for the last little bit, and smoking is another thing on my to do list for the near future. Smoking and biting my nails haha.
