Yea, he basically admits that he couldn't keep up, but to say it turned people/skaters off is ridiculous.
He also gets in a few more digs calling Plan B the first entrance of "athletics" and "jocks" into skateboarding.
Which is funny and ironic because I guess then it was Questionable that turned Mike V on to backyard wrestling and then his short-lived hockey career.

I understand his viewpoint. Were you guys around in skating then? It was very much a cliquey boys club. You skate one way, or you get dogged for it. The attitude came with the goofy boy pants and small wheels. It doesn't make sense in hindsight, but it's something you had to be there for to understand.

So you're saying you give a fuck that people criticize the way you skate? If you and Mike V really are on the skating as an "art form" kick, then why would either of you give a shit what anybody says about anything you do. I don't have to "be there" to understand that Mike V is one of the biggest walking contradictions on the face of the planet.

Naaah, Questionable was mind blowing and it got us all hyped and wanting to skate more and push the cutting edge even more.
That it had the opposite effect on Mike V. and on you tells us more about you and him than about the majority of the skaters around at the time.
Not to mention Questionable was full of all kinds of different skating so you cannot say it had a "my way or the highway" mentality.

Did I say I give/gave a fuck if people criticize how I skate? I lived in a bumbleshit town in the midwest, that had 6 skaters in 1992. I got vibed because I was still skating my old Ray Barbee set up, and I didn't have tiny wheels and big clothes because I had no way to even get out of town to find a skateshop to even get new product, so I had to use what I had.
All I'm saying is it was, from the little I experienced, and everything I've read and heard since, was a cliquey little "new street only" club. Look at all the videos from those days. There was no skating shown besides street. It didn't even lighten up until Girl came around and brought a little bit more humor into things again.
If someone besides Mike V made those statements he did, you'd probably take it with more validity I suppose.

Koston:
"Everything is more accepted now, and there's way more personalities in it. There's a lot of different styles, which is great 'cause it gives you variety. Everyone was the same in the '90s, and it wasn't that awesome. It's not as exciting. Variation is what's needed, and we need to see people's individuality. It used to be like that in the '80s and that's back. I've lived through all the eras, and it's kinda cool to see it all existing in one period."

You realize that people got beat up, thrown in trash cans or the fountain for being "kooks" (a kook being something completely subjective and fluid from day to day) back at EMB in 1990? Yes, if you were not part of the cool kids club you got shat upon.
Mike V may be controversial, but he's making a valid point.

i think what people didn't realize is all that shit in 90's skateboarding was needed, it may have been taken a bit far but it was needed to get rid of the 80s bullshit in skateboarding. You can say that the tiny wheels big pants shit was completely dumb but was it any more retarded than try to do tricks on a board shaped like a ripsaw or and 89 Steve Cabellero? Skateboarding in the end of the 80s was completely bullshit and marketing something needed to happen to get away from that. You can pick out any 80's magazine and about 50% of the pros were bullshit, find street contest from the 80s and besides Gonz dudes spent the 30 seconds of their runs doing G Turns.
Their was a lot of dumbshit and bad attitudes in the 90s but it was all necessary for skateboarding to progress, if it wouldn't have happened do u think dudes like Hensley and Mike Carroll would have been able to go as far as they did riding a fish tailed Tony Mag board with 60mm H Street wheels.

The title of this thread is a bit misleading.
Mike is saying that when someone who has been skating for fun and challenging themselves at their own pace saw a video
like that, it was very intimidating and intense, as much as it was amazing and awesome.
He makes a valid point.
Also, this is important:
If you weren't actually skating when that video came out, your opinion on his statements are kind of ridiculous.
It's like a 20 year old telling a 'Nam vet that The Vietnam War was intense because I watched Full Metal Jacket.
