I have to go with the impopular vote here that Mike V in this instance has a point. Questionable changed skateboarding so much more than any other video in the early 90's.
It totally didn't turn me off from skating, but it did make it clear to me that any hope of ever being 'good' on a skateboard was forever gone. I didn't have that after watching Hokus Pokus or Video Days.
To put it in perspective: in Pat Duffys epicly later'd O'Dell tells Duffy that at the time questionable came out, O'Dell couldn't comprehend how anyone could grind a round rail, let alone the monster he ended his part with.
So here's us mortals trying to grind a tiny round flatbar, raised just inches from the ground, and there is Pat Duffy in slow motion going down a handrail so big it doesn't even fit your tv-screen.
Questionable made skateboarding infinitely more cool, but definitely not more accessible.

I think maybe his idea of the "jock mentality" that came along with Plan B in his eyes, was the idea that Questionable (or maybe moreso Virtual Reality) was the first video that you went out and practiced tricks to specifically film. You didn't just go out and skate around for a weekend, and whatever was filmed was your part. You went out over long periods of time and got the best of the best, trying stuff over and over. Mike Carroll talks a lot about how making those videos bummed him out. Why do you think they all left and started their own thing?
My opinion (which I'm not saying is right) was that, in a different way, Plan B/DC did jock out the aesthetics of skating. It drove me nuts back then. The swishy pants and the super poofy Jordan rip off shoes that DC did. I couldn't stand it. I thought it went against what skating stood for. But, a lot of people dug it. Everyone has their tastes.

Yea, because you were so close to landing Mctwists in 1985 or carving the deep end of a pool in '78.
Your argument is so fucking retarded beyond belief.
Skateboarding has always been hard and never more accessible.
We always just keep raising the bar.

And what's so hard about carving the deep end of a pool? The shallow end is the hard part to pump you fucking moron. Do you even skate?

you're missing the point. The skating portrayed in questionable defined what skateboarding was in our collective minds. Anything else was shit. If you didn't have baggy blue jeans, a wallet on a chain, venture featherlites and 39 mm wheels, you were not a skateboarder. If you couldn't do a K-grind for miles, I personally kicked your ass.

This is an extremely important point to consider when discussing this topic. That video and it's successor ended up pushing people away who were actually in those videos and on the company.
It's undeniable that it directly or indirectly bummed many people out and led to hordes of kids quitting, but the fact that it bothered people who were actually in it strongly reinforces Mike V's point:

No, this is easy to understand, street skating was a lot more accessible to the average skater than the vert scene in the '80s or the pool scene in the '70s.
You are obviously the one that were not around skating at the time.

Virtual Reality wasn't the first Plan B video, dumb ass. Don't conflate the two.
They left for the same reason Rocco left Vision, Gonz left Rocco, Jason Lee left Gonz...

oh ok, so one of the lines was irrelevant and had nothing to do with our discussion. Gotcha. Here I thought you were stupid, it turns out you're just dumb.
Its true I didn't skate in the 70's-80's and I wouldn't speak to the relevance of any video that came out in its time when I wasn't even there, or argue when somebody who was there says something about it. But of course, if you weren't even skating in '92, then we are on even ground in discussing the 70's and 80's. I know its hard for you to understand, but you are very very stupid and can't real develop a thought or argument yet. You'll learn someday though.

This is the only thing im getting out of this thread "You weren't around then" "no fuck you, i totally was"
So either EVERYBODY was there, or NOBODY was there.
I for one wasn't there. But as an avid skateboard knowledge connoisseur, I appreciate what all Mike V has/had done for street skating.
But what I got out of it, (and i could be misinterpreting this, who knows) is that Mike admitted he couldnt keep up with the way it changed and he sounded just a little bitter. And i think its funny that somebody with the "i'll punch til I'm right" attitude Mike has would come off wit the "j" word.

I never denied it either. I suppose there are two discussions going on here. One is the Questionable topic that Mike V brought up, and the other is Mike V himself.

To think, while Mike V was busy watching questionable he could have been doing something useful like kicking your mother in the uterus.

Skateboarding changed so fast in the early 90`s,
People who were considered Rippers in 89-90
were laughed at in 92,
easily 96+% of the skaters I knew in 89 had quit in 92,
I dont know if the Plan B Video is responsible for this,
but they surely didnt slow the change down.

Yawn.... mountain>mole hill
Skate shops were few and far between during that time. If the closest shop didn't have it you didn't see. Not to mention someone within your group of friends had to have the money to purchase it. Point is videos didn't have as much of an impact as people are making it out. If anybody quit because of questionable, good riddance.

I understand his viewpoint. Were you guys around in skating then? It was very much a cliquey boys club. You skate one way, or you get dogged for it. The attitude came with the goofy boy pants and small wheels. It doesn't make sense in hindsight, but it's something you had to be there for to understand.
Naaah, Questionable was mind blowing and it got us all hyped and wanting to skate more and push the cutting edge even more.
That it had the opposite effect on Mike V. and on you tells us more about you and him than about the majority of the skaters around at the time.
Not to mention
Questionable was full of all kinds of different skating
so you cannot say it had a "my way or the highway" mentality.

I was skating at the time, and Questionable was mindblowing, and scared the shit out of me as much as it stoked the shit out of me. But it did make you think that Pro skating is an unattainable thing that is getting way out of control with the amount of skill it takes to do, and that's totally right. Shit's not easy, that's why it's awesome and why I still get stoked on skate videos, even though there's trillions of skaters who can do every trick from Questionable now.
It blew Vallelys cover as a bullshit pro who's sun had set. At least he hasn't done a Gator and is still doing shit, even though he needs to shut his jockhole and put some lemon & lime with his bitters.
