Neo-Nazi Party gains 7% of the vote in Greece's parliamentary elections

Pretty disturbing that a Neo-Nazi party now has a say in decisions in Greece, at the same time it's only 7%, but if you think that in 1928 the Nazis only had 2.5% of the vote and by 1932 (mostly thanks to the depression) they had 37%. So who's to say that the economic outlook in Greece only gets worse and this party only continue to become more popular.

to be fair, it's a nationalist party with anti-imigration policies. not suprising they are getting a spike considering the financial conditions over there.

Comon practice in unstable conditions of today. Even in Sweden, viewed as a communist state by many, a rightwing quasynazi party gained roughly 10 per cent not many years ago.

having been to greece myself, i could definitely see how and why some greek people would be frustrated with illegal immigration. i saw first hand, some pretty gnarly shit go down in terms of racism and extreme nationalism. i put a sticker of the greek flag on one my boards and it was scratched up a bit from skating, and had some huge greek guy tell me to take it off or he would beat me up.

Well mainly because
they're
denying the importance of the Enlightenment, and Industrial Revolution. That could set some things in backward motion if they garner control. As well they're feared because of their militancy, the Roman salute (Used by the nazi's of the 1930's-40's as well as neo-nazi fascist groups), hate crimes against minorities, and so on.

you're right.
anti-illegal immigration policies quickly become Nationalist policies that work against any group of "others." Take into consideration the fact that here in the States the Supreme Court recently upheld an Arizona law that requires proof of citizenship from anyone whose legal status is in question. In a legal sense one might argue that such a decree is fine and is in place to help uphold the law. How soon though, will the time come when officers of the law begin checking the IDs of anyone who appears suspicious? It's safe to say that in Arizona reason for suspicion will be having skin that is not white.

I thought they just heard arguments on the case, did they really decide in favor already?
I'm sure Jan Brewer is far to the right of any of the greek Neo-nazis, though shes to the right of the original Nazis.
Crazy that Zangief is on their side.

I jumped the gun with that comment because I'm blown away by the speculation that has been stated at this point. I won't be surprised when it's upheld though. Here's a summary, which i'm sure you're familiar with.
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/26/nation/la-na-court-immigration-20120426
Chief JusticeJohn G. Roberts Jr.said he saw no problem with Arizona's police checking with federal immigration officials once someone has been lawfully stopped. "What could possibly be wrong if Arizona arrests someone, let's say for drunk driving ? and the arresting officer says, 'I'm going to call the federal agency and find out if this person is here illegally'?"
now comes the problem with random checkpoints that are set to check for activities such as "drunk driving"

DUI checkpoints are a big one in LA. The fucked up thing is that most of the time they impound and resell the car too.

They're few and far between here in MA and are usually announced through local news outlets a few days prior. When I was living in North Carolina though, DUI checkpoints seemed to be rampant.
Gipper, did you get the PM that I tried to send? Many of the PMs that I send don't go through.

Illegal immigration is a big problem in Europe, so i'm not surprised, why nationalists gain so many votes. I'm against immigration also, but i think the nazis are a bit too radical on their other visions of society.

I am greek and i have to say that most people who voted the nazis dont even know what they voted for. This Neo-Nazi party was presented as an anti-system alternative by the media in a very suspicious way.
People are angry with the system not only in greece but globally. The media presented nazis as an extremist group but instead of leaving them out, they constantly refered to them and they made clear that they are afraid of them. The same happened with politicians before elections after the results of the first polls that showed a 4% for nazis. So ignorant people liked the "fear" nazis caused to the system
The two major political parties also had racist agentas(but never drastically did anything) and had cultivated the hatred towards immigrants, in order to distract people from blaming the politicians and the rich elite. So many people who are angry with immigrants went towards other parties with fascist agentas (including the nazis).
There are also some documents that confirm that their leader used to be an agent at the greek secret agency and some testimonies from witnesses, who used to be members that say that nazis have been funded by the conservative party (new democracy) in the past. Moreover everyone knows the bonds between police and members of the nazi group. Sometimes the have cooperated against anarchists, communists and simple people who protest.
So connect the dots. Nazis are the real face of the system.

Neo Nazi party has many gangs that attack immigrants and leftish people. All of their members start that way. They also have some bonds with the underworld (guns, drugs, blackmailing owners and stuff) and why not when the police is their friends. I ve seen some of these with my own eyes...

well, to be fair, at least in german-speaking countries the far-right and the police have... good relations, to say the least. if we have a large nazi-rally and a protest-march against it with families, children, and so on you can be sure that the police will tackle the peaceful protesters.

I dont know if this was mentioned anywhere but elections also showed another result. Left and far left parties got a total of 30% for the first time since the civil war between communists and right wing after the 2nd world war (1949).
The least left of them got 2nd with an 16-17% if i am not mistaken.
However there was a big number of people who didnt vote this is partly because there are many anarchists who dont vote, many disappointed voters of the major political parties who didnt vote and due to the economic situation many people didnt bother to travel to the place they voted. Non voters are usually around 20-25% but this time they were around 35%.
The two major political parties who are the enforcers of the neo-liberal policies, that are being forced from EU, got smashed down to a total of 33% and cant form a government together.
They used to have more than 80% with a historic low of 79% in 2009
. So now we are being ungoverned and we are about to have new elections.
