Except race is socially constructed, just like gender is. You're conflating "gender" and "sex" when they actually refer to two different things. Which is why "transgender" and "transsexual" are different things. So not only do you not understand psychology (or biology), but you don't understand sociology either (despite mentioning anthropology earlier).

I don't think it is an issue of disliking your opinion, but disliking the way you are presenting your opinion. You obviously have some hatred toward Transgendered people, I can tell by the way you talk about the guy at your work that "cut his dick off" and is now a "lunatic". Gender is not based on physical properties (i.e. a vagina, tits, and a penis) it is based on what you are in your mind. Most cases of gender dysphoria manifest at a really early age. It is not like one day people are like, "I think I should be a woman." Generally people have known their whole lives, but finally come to terms with it and decide to take the plunge of making a transition. You are entitled to your opinion, you are not entitled to be a hateful bigot. If you want to speak like that, focus your account and go to the Foxnews.com forum, I think you would get a long with a lot more people there.

After reading the "Obama backs gay marriage" thread I realized that the fact that Tom is married leads to an interesting situation for opponents of gay marriage.  Does the sanctity of the marriage get grandfathered in since it occurred at the point of being a heterosexual relationship or dose the commitment and love dissolve as soon as Laura takes the reigns and it becomes a homosexual relationship?  I want to see some dipshit short circuit over that one.  I wonder if Jesus could comeback for the sole purpose of clearing this up?

I was always under the impression that gender had both biochemical and social aspects, and that typically the dysphoria of gender dysphoria comes from the fact that the person's brain chemistry doesn't match with the social expectation of their brain chemistry.
If it was entirely socially constructed we Tom Gabel would have been socialized into his role without any interference. Its interesting, because really, the psychological problems actually are the fault of society in these cases.
However, the idea that race is the only thing people are born with, or that race is the only trait that carries social significance in terms of tolerance is complete and utter indefensible bullshit.

Yes, there is a difference. Although I can't think of any off of the top of my head, I know that there have been sociologists/queer theorists that have talked about the necessity of differentiating the two. But for example, gay is a label based off of sexual orientation/attraction whereas trans- is a label for self-identity formation.


Edit: Since it was brought up, but should not become the focus of this thread, the idea that one is born WITH race is an idiotic idea in and of itself.

this isn't that uncommon actually.  i once replaced a member of a band who had quit in order to become a woman.  i'm pretty sure he's still with his girlfriend and that was over 10 years ago. 

life on this planet can be pretty short and shitty.  at the end of the day you gotta do what makes you happy.  if this is what makes them happy, then who are any of us to judge
