As long as there is a collective group of people feeding off each other's passion , whether it be the industry as a whole/a local crew/specific niches (freestyle/bombing hills/etc) there will be trends.

Broadly defined as Macro and Micro trends. Concerning the Micro we can say that it varies extremely widely and is much more influential on a day to day basis than Macro.  Concerning Macro we can say that it varies very little and influences the most people but in much more subtle ways.

In skateboarding as a whole there is never any "new" trends only cycles of tricks that keep coming back into style , rehabilitated/modernized and if it's relatively accepted it will always remain in some place permanently.

Some tricks are considered trends simply because only a few people are skillful enough to actually make it stand out. Skating up rails , darkslides , no comply variations , late flip variations , extremely tech vert tricks , etc.

Whereas other trends are based entirely on sheer style/gnarlyness. More and more style/skill is becoming standardized. We often hear about east vs west coast style. Robotic vs Raw. In the earlier days punk vs hip-hop. And ever since the wide acceptance of these terms/generalizations we've lost the "surprise" factor of seeing something new and unique. We are purposefully making boxes for people to fit in.

It's up to the point where we are here , on the internet , actively guessing at what will-be-cool. The absurdity of this discussion can be highlighted by the fact that we are trying to preemptively diminish the surprise we will feel , the sudden apparition of something new , as "obvious/logical/natural progression". We don't really want anything new , we want a steady formula to follow.

In all this I see only one thing , we are way too fucking focused on what it means to be a skateboarder and not at all focused on appreciating all of skateboarding. My suggestion is to not pay attention, go out and skate and enjoy the ride.
