Having been around and skating when Risk It was released I don't think anyone thought he landed it (as they'd have put the footage in if it had been a make) but it was more to show how fucking close he was to it.
I was around during that time and I wasn't fooled but They should have shown the bail

Hawk did the same at the end of a vid a few years later as well if I recall.
I don't think either of those trying it knew just how hard it was getting that last few % of the trick.
You are talking about Birdhouse's "The End" which came out 10 years later. Tony wanted to achieve two things for that video part. Do the loop, and do the 900. One out of two ain't bad.
However, they showed him
bailing
the 900's unlike Danny in Risk It
Also, I've got one more piece of info that might blow yer mind. Okay, so Tony finally landed a 900 in the X-games (summer of 1999). Shortly there after I was watching a new 411 and one of those DC ads came on. You know, the ones that self congratulate Danny Way on all his accomplishments. You know, the ones with the timeline and shit. Well anyways, it said like "1989" and showed that fake ass 900 from "Risk It" in it, like it was kinda trying to steal the thunder from Tony Hawk.
I'm not making this up either. I saw it with my own 2 eyes and frankly I was pissed. I've looked all over the interwebs for this clip but can't find it, but believe me... it exists. somewhere

Well, one thing X-Games filmers can learn from Street League is how to film.
The skaters look like ants out there on the course.
Where is the DC cam?

I went to the qualifiers live, just because it was down the street, and I figured seeing the mega in person would be pretty amazing, and not something you see everyday. I didn't realize that Jake Brown and Lincoln Ueda would be the only people I recognized. It was still pretty cool, though the trick selection was monotonous.
One thing to note- while the little kids were spinning like fucking tornadoes, they really weren't going that high. The people that really impressed me were the dudes who were getting as high as they could off of the quarterpipe- and those were always the older guys. There was one kid who rode for birdhouse who was a little older (like young 20s I think?) and he was doing like 20 foot high super inverted Mctwists, like the kind that almost look like full flips. That shit was cool.
But yeah, I was really disappointed not to see Bob or Danny.
Another random thing, after the contest was over, it was kind of open over by the megaramp, so I walked right up to it, and its pretty fucking nuts, but the funny thing was that those like 11-15 year old kids were all playing around by the ramp, and they were total kids. It was really weird to see them being normal kids acting like kids. I don't know what I expected them to act like, but it was interesting. The kids themselves weren't worth hating on, maybe the vicarious living moms who hug each other and nearly cry everytime their son does a 900 are though.
Sidenote- that Jagger kid who did the backflip and was going for the 360 flip- the announcer said his family owns and runs and gymnastics and skate camp (maybe woodward?) so he basically has been training for this type of shit like a Chinese gymnast.
Also, I found out afterwards, if you want to see the x-games for free and are in LA, apparently you can go to the Ritz Carleton across the street, go to the 3rd floor pool lounge (free and open to all until sundown) and apparently you can see whatever you want for free from there.
that's interesting. i bet you would have to be a guest at Ritz Carleton to go to the pool lounge though, no?
i know what you mean about kids acting like kids. i remember seeing that little 7 year old ripper at venice (when he was like 5) ripping the huge bowl there, doing huge airs and lip slides . then he goes to his dad holding his crotch and says "daddy i have to go pee pee" and he's wearing a Thomas the Train shirt. i couldn't reconcile that that was the same person ripping the shit out of a gigantic bowl
Yeah, it was totally that kind of thing.
According to the guy who told me, the pool deck is open to non-guests up until sundown.

I still think one of the papas bro's without a camera (proof) got a 900 before hawk, hawk just happened to have the fairytale story of getting it at the xgames.

interesting. Do you have any reason for thinking that, or do you just like to think that? Because really, Tony did the first one, and it was at the x-games. A lot of people want to find a way it wasn't him and it wasn't there, because in some ways its super cheesy, but its how it happened.

Never heard someone other than Tony did the 900 first.
Perhaps you're confusing it with the Duane Peters/ first loop/ no documentation rumor.

I heard the Papas 900 rumour years ago. I also remember that DC ad with D-Way's 900 loop out.
Umm, don't fuck kids?
That's all.

Danny has an interview in this month's Sidewalk mag (UK). He sheds some light on the 900 in Risk it and other things. Good interview in all. Here is an excerpt:
When you rode for Blind, can I ask what?s the story about the 900 at the end of your Risk It that part? Did you know they were going to put that in?
I didn?t know they were going to put that in. I didn?t land it, well, I landed on my board and slid out, but if I had fully landed it, it would have been in there. I didn?t put that footage in there, someone else did.
How did that make you feel?
I don?t really remember. At that time I was just starting to figure out how to do certain tricks on the ramp that I was doing on street. The 900 at that phase for me wasn?t as important. It wasn?t really relative to the path that I was heading down as far as progression in skateboarding. I felt like that was the tail end of Tony Hawk?s path which was spin tricks, 720?s and variations of 540?s. When I started trying 900?s I felt like I was taking a jab at Tony. It?s one of those things that I should have probably finished and done it and there would have never been this big 900 craze leading into a 1080 thing now which is disgusting. It blows me away how much emphasis is put on these moves like the 900 and the 1080. Every other time I get asked something it like: ?oh what do you think about this kid Tom who did the 1080?? Well if you think 180 more degrees is more important than the last trick. It just doesn?t really intrigue me in terms of progression. You got a turn and then you turn a little bit more degrees and its like ?holy shit!? (sarcastically) How much more of a thought process went into coming up with that one? What a genius idea just adding another rotation to it. Incredible, brilliant creativity right there!
Anyways it wasn?t important to me to pursue that so I didn?t care. Seeing my attempt in there is a little weird; I don?t want a bail in a video part.

I don't want to be the one who has to explain to the moms why her son didn't win the skateboard contest despite the fact that her kid landed a 900 midway in his vert run.

I figure they (espn) have failed by not seeing that the act of jumping the gap and hitting the quarter are not the attraction here. The fans want to see the vert legends hit this thing and bust the bread and butter tricks with style. Having a bunch of little boys competing against Bob and Jake Brown is Whack. Has anyone considered what would happen if that little turd jagger ejected like danny or jake 50+ feet in the air

It's also been said a few times that one of those vert skating brother (twins) from the east coast, i think Maryland or Pennsylvania actually did it first. There was footage of those dudes doing it shortly after Tony made it, so they at least must have been pretty close. Does anyone know the dudes i'm talking about?

If I'm not mistaken, it was the Lopes Brothers of New Jersey, specifically Rich Lopes. Nieratko wrote a few times that Rich was doing 900s, but I wasn't sure if he was serious or that was pro-Jersey propaganda.

I watched some of that last night for the first time in a while and was actually kind of amazed when an 11 year old, apparently named after Mick Jagger, did a backflip first try then he later tried a no grab 360 flip. But after watching a few runs I kind of became desensitized to the absurd size of the ramp it just became a circus act. Not quite Bob's part in Extremely Sorry but what the hell does he expect? Little kid street skaters mostly only do big ollies and boardslides.
As far as 900s go, on such a big ramp isn't it just kind of the next 540? Dudes used to always do 540s in vert comps.
I live near Jagger and the kid can skate street as well. He's a cool dude too.

Cab does in his Ben Hatchell's part in Fun I think. Not super sure if that's the right video but Cab definetly did a handplant on the quarter.
