The End Of The Am?
«

The title doesn't necessarily reflect this question properly but bare with me.
Thinking on the fact that Forrest Edwards, although substantially weird, does not have a rock-solid sponsorship, yet has had more coverage than most 'flow' guys out there and is also heavily recognized throughout 'skateboarding'...oh yeah, and RIPS.
In today's age of skateboarding, is the 'am' increasingly harder to come across?
Forest is just one example.
How good does one have to be to be 'put on' these days and what does that mean for skateboarding's future?
edit: This came to me after watching Mikey Haywood's video on the main page and thinking "this dude was one of the best skateboarders in the world" according to many...and now...nothing. Same with Gonzalo..sad really in my opinion

mikey haywood was one of the best in the world? i think you mean someone else, he pretty much just came in the scene of skating and he's real good but by far not one of the best. Gonzalo hernandez? i agree i think he should atleast be am. And you pretty much won't get hooked up unless you have something new to offer to a team and you have to atleast live near the distribution warehouse so they have full access to you it seems. And there's not many dudes out with both. Cause people in Cali near the distributions grow up learning styles and tricks of the dudes already in Cali so a lot of them become unoriginal and the ones from out of state are too far to deal with.

What an idiotic thread. There have always been and always will be great skaters that get passed over by top-tier teams, end up on less well-known teams, or rot on flow. This is not a new phenomenon. We just have more access to these kids now. Which I'd say makes being am MORE important because it allows you an actual chance to get your name out there and differentiate yourself from the pack. In no way did your post have anything to do with "the end of the am."

I personally don't consider the dude 'one of the best in the world' by any stretch of the imagination. if you read what i said, i added 'according to many' simply based on the fact that he was chosen out of plenty of unsponsored amateurs that sent in footage for OIAM, thats it.
I must have not phrased my question eloquently enough.
Breaking it down again, i was simply asking how much do you, the slap mb community or those who are reading this, think it takes to get fully put on, when dudes who have a ton of exposure to the general skateboard community are having so much trouble. It seemed at one point, a significant amount of skill could get you from flow to am in a shorter amount of time.
An open ended question to start a discussion, nothing more nothing less.

It's because skate companies don't have as much money as you think and can't afford the costs of adding another team rider.

Great personality, exceptionally unique skateboarder, unique style, right place, right time, phenominal luck, contests, filmers, photographers, tons o hard work. Everyone has to wanna watch you skate over everyone else. So yeah pretty much no chance for anyone.

Theres also the part about fitting in on the team / with the team and being about what a particular company is about. otherwise everything the board co puts out looks stupid.

Skaters today are generic as fuck. Doesn't matter what tricks you can do or where you do them. It's always been about trick selection and style. I'd rather watch Gino back-tail a curb than watch some lame kid huck a laser flip down a 20.

I'd rather watch him jack off with a hat on the ground in front of him for change.
Also, it's just luck. If you are amazing, and not just thinking you are, you should move to California and start meeting people, and skating famous spots. You don't have to, but you'll have less chance if you don't. It used to be if you went to Tampa Am you'd get hooked up if you did well, turn pro if you won. There's different paths though, Arto killed all those contests then moved to the states. Everyone big moves to California or is from there.
These dudes who never get hooked up are probably wack people, or have not met the right people, or are so far removed from the industry. It's a business, if you wanted to be an investment banker, you wouldn't stay in Columbus, Ohio, you'd go to NY. You have to go where the industry is.

Plan B seems to horde a ton of talented dudes on flow and never do anything with them. Micky Papa was the first guy I thought of when I saw this thread. And whatever happened to Felipe Gustavo turning pro? I think I remember hearing about Powell or H-Street or some shit doing the same thing back in the day.

thrift store clothing + basic tricks = flow
thrift store clothing + tats + basic tricks = am
thrift store clothing + tats + motorcycle + basic tricks = pro status
thrift store clothing + tats + motorcycle + mini ramp skating = legends division

The reason why Forrest Edwards isn't going any where is because there are tons of people that can do the same type of shit the he's doing. There's nothing original about him. To make it some where you have to stand out from every one else. The reason why Jake Johnson and Gilbert Crockett went pro is because they have something new to bring to skateboarding. They are showing that you don't have to dance on a ledge or huck your self down a set of stairs to get paid to skate. They skate fast, have a good style, skate cool shit, and have a big bag of tricks. Fuck You

I agree I think that skateboarding is finally taking a step back and searching more for creative skaters then skilled skaters. if those are one in the same then great but in this day in age i want to see skaters who cant be emulated. I think skateboarding is going back to a cooler time when skaters were more creative. I think its two camps in the biz their are the technical trick enthusiasts who really care the specifics and then there are the people who go out and want to express themeselves. i think both are great i just seem to side with the second.

its honestly all about who you know in skating. you can be the best out there and not have a connection and never get sponsored.
gonzo has been good forever and if he knew the right people he would most likely be pro by now, but the skate industry sucks dick and he is just now getting flow. Same with forrest, but i understand how people dont really like his image and shit but thats whats lame.the skate industry only cares somewhat about skating ability. they care more about style and personality then the actual skating. so take notes kids! buy your dickies, trucker hats, skate fast, and do basic tricks with STEEZ. smoking cigarettes and having tattoos can help too. and you may become the next hot AM
