thanks mattchew.
i dug andy stone and that whole pulaski stacked trashcan 90s shit. i still thought of it as 'underworld element' during fine artists not just 'element' yet. not to mention w/ the KIDS style attack of the rollerblader it was kind of a hood look, not ready for zumies at all.
totally loved how pulaski shaped him and reese forbes, brian tucci and maybe even sheffey. horizontal can atop a vertical can and i still call ollieing over a trashcan down onto a ledge a 'pulaski lipslide' [see also pulaski 50-50, etc].
good to hear about the diceman soundtrack also, was a good novelty.
cheers, chop!

Also wondered what the deal was with that footage of the dude with the motorcycle helmet in the credits of fine artists. Chops never disappoints. The clip to go with the interview was icing on the cake.

Great read.
My mind is still blown from seeing Shawn Mullendore clear 2 trash cans stacked tall ways, end to end. Nollied the 2 cans with the sideways top can too that day.
Also, I've never heard any of the Pulaski locals talk about Big Youngn. Dude lived in Pulaski.

Great interview as always. Regarding Andy's Check-Out: https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--3i3B7upiTs/WMrqAKBdyxI/AAAAAAAAeWs/3E1OPQ7xu4U2rDUFOs1UcUq19ahCCfHNACPcB/s1600/stonecheckchrome.jpg, what the fuck is a "nosedrive"? I would always see it referenced in early 90s mags and assume it's slang for a nosegrind or a noseslide, but have never quite figured it out.

Any oldies know about that one?

A "nosedrive" is where you pivot an extra 180 out of a trick by landing on the nose of your board and doing either a frontside or backside 180 slide mostly on the ground. An example of a basic nose drive would be to perform and ollie and shift your weight towards the nose of your board. When your board is approaching the ground, land on the nose of your board almost like a nose manual except you swing your back truck around 180 with your wheels sliding on the ground for the last 45 degrees of the turn. They're super fun and that's how I do my frontside kick flips, they're more like kick flip nosedrives. Hope that helps

So, has the identity of the blind guy on a pogostick ever been brought to light? It would be funny if he ended up being a "real" filmer.

Andy Stone was my second first favorite skater. Great fucking read. I remember that element industry section in 411 where he 3 flipped over a trash can and it being the first time skateboarding blew my fucking mind.

Made a super good point about 411 helping east coast skaters.....

Naturally all the mags were so established on the west...when a new medium popped up, it opened things up.

To the person who inquired above, I did ask but it didn't make the final cut. Here you go.
Thanks.

Where did "Filmed by a Blind Man on a Pogo Stick" come from?

(laughs) That's my friend Brian Connelly, who oddly enough makes his living doing video production these days. I don't think he'll ever live that one down. I just think that he'd lost his board somehow and just decided to run along with me to try and film what he could. There wasn't any real image stabilization back then.

We honestly didn't know what was necessarily going to make the cut in the video, this is before the days where you sat with the editor, so we just put that line in there with everything else and sent it... I still can't believe they used that. Even for back then, it was rough.

That unreleased video clip was so awesome. Totally forgot how good his 360 flip was/is. Guessing that footage was end of Element days or start of Capital era?

Always blows me away how bad the income was for the majority of pro skaters

Thank you Chromeball for always putting out the goods Smiley

I got about a billion words to describe how dope I think Andy's style was... For fear of wearing out the keys on my keyboard typing, I'll just mention a clip that stuck out as ill from his profile in 411. The clip where he ollies the bike rack and before the ollie they're zoomed in on his license plate that says "REPRZNT"... I always thought that was great. Man, those where the days Smiley

In an old adidas advert (circa 1995), I think it was Mark Gonzales doing an 180 to switch manual and the trick was named "180 nose drive". I am not sure if the nose dragged on the floor and if this is what made the difference from a manual and hence the name. Trying to find the advert online.....

edit: the shoe looked similar to this, can't find the advert or the shoe name even though it was sort of popular back in the day

if the 180 was regular, then it would be a fakie nose drive.

Ha! I used to work with Brian in the NY film industry from time to time. We got to talking one day shortly before he moved to California and he started taking about DC, Pepe, Andy Stone etc. I was pretty suprised... Wish I knew he was the infamous blind man on a pogo stick haha....

Fuck yes , my memory is usually really good about tricks in parts but I can't for the life of me remember anything specific he did in that section but I'll never ever forget that Virginia license plate that said REPRZNT.
