I just finished watching the six-minute, one-shot "trailer" they put out to promote CPH 2017 (thread on it here: http://www.slapmagazine.com/component/option,com_jfusion/Itemid,4/index.php?topic=95976.0). Especially in the recent years, it looked like such a blast; and the coming week should be just as rad. When it started a decade or so back, it seemed just a contest (albeit a gnarly one). And in recent years the coverage has included all the novel events and locations on the periphery of the actual contest, and throughout several days.

What seems the perfect skate event got me thinking, anyone know how it evolved into its current form; not only as a contest, but equally a city-wide skate party for pros and fans alike? Is it Copenhagen's board of tourism or something? Is it an effort by the city to bolster the city's hipness? The government obviously has some hand in it... They seemingly shut down street spots during the CPH weekend to facilitate skaters during their thing--last year they even had that one event in the atrium of the city hall. I'm curious because it's hard to wrap my puny American mind around the who and why of how the event came to be, as it's imagining an NY/LA/SF/etc. doing anything as cool and progressive as what Copenhagen's doing.

While 1 poster brings 2 our attention da rumor that Ethan sat @ home and made salsa, another states Mr.Fowler sat out a demo bc it was "2 hot".I was initially psyched on da salsa revelation, but left wondering if Fowl cant take heat how does this effect da salsa?Sounds like his salsa is quite bland.

I find it crazy that any city would openly invite scumbag skaters.

It's been a pretty organic development, but I remember from the start they wanted to make a contest that was more a get-together than a contest (I remember the first year - I was 15, I think - and they handed out free premium beers - isn't that the name for the stronger ones? golden ladies in Denmark - to everyone... also people younger than me, which basically made the vert contest into some stuntshow/party as everyone was pretty drunk and in a pretty ecstatic mood). Now I wasn't around back then, but that's what the older guys say skatecontests used to be like.

Then I remember they did a campaign for the 2nd or 3rd edition, where they traveled to USA and asked a lot of pro skaters who they wanted to see in a contest (and therefor invited those guys... I think that's the year Staba said he wanted a V.I.P. area in the middle of the course - which he got).

Then for the local government support - there's a big load of lobbyism there. There was an interview with one of the people who makes the contest (William Frederiksen) a few years ago, where he talked about how he basically is a lobbyist in the city hall working to improve the conditions of the Copenhagen Skate Scene. These days there's a huge support for the scene by the local government, but I think that state of mind owes a lot to Frederiksen.

And then basically not wanting fences and pouring alcohol into people's mouth holes creates a great atmosphere.

I've been to Open week twice and it's fucking amazing. I usually go to Copenhagen about twice a year and it's always chill and fun. These days if I was to go to Open week I'd prefer to be in a larger group whereas just to skate and chill I'd want three or four people with me maximum.

Helsinki followed suit in recent years with their city-wide contest called Helride, run under similar circumstances - Helride is the one with the head to head races around a massive DIY bowl/park beside a large music festival, along with a downhill best line contest/jam on a hill in the Kallio part of the city.

From what I remember last August, CPH Pro was one week in August, followed by Helride the week after and Malmo Bowlriders the 3rd week - could have the order wrong but you get what I mean.  All three cities are quite progressive and forward thinking when it comes to providing for skating and other leftfield sports stuff.

Copenhagen is the raddest shit going. I'm so bummed I wont be making it this year. Yes , William is the man and makes it happen with the government. It is amazing the things they can accomplish when bullshit law suits are a non issue. The contest inside city hall was amazing. Unfortunately, I heard that one wont happen again  due to damage to the 300+ year old floors. The street spot contests were great, with little to no security or barriers between the public and the skaters.  it looked like just an amazing session with 2-300 spectators. Imagine the vibe of  late 90's, early 2000's Tampa Pro, with an endless supply of beer, weed, and skate spots.

CPH has got to be sickest event in skateboarding--Dime Glory Challenge is the only thing comes close--it's the closest we've come as a society to a skateboarding utopia
