I was watching Brandon Turner's guilty part due to the new nine club episode and was thinking how it would be a goldmine for a board company if there was another Turner on the scene right now. Then I remembered that Kevin Bradley exists.
I then came up with a brilliant idea for a thread topic.
Which pros of the current crop are closest in style or relevancy to guys like Templeton, Saari, Penny, Mountain, Reynolds etc...?
Is Chris Cole still the new Jamie Thomas?

i sometimes get kenny reed vibes from watching ryan lay. that super long moroccan ledge that ryan back 50s in his etnies' album part seems like a spot that kenny would have scouted out during one of those on video magazine postcards from the road.

And Cody Cepeda won battle at the berrics and is still not good enough to go pro. Joslin is great don’t get me wrong but I would never compare him to Reynolds. Having a deep bag of tricks isn’t everything.

I’ve heard a few people compare Wes Kramer to Penny based on natural ability but not style wise I suppose.
I always thought of Vincent Alvarez as the new Ben Sanchez.

I don’t think these comparisons really work if the older counterpart is still not only skating, but in some cases more relevant. (I think Jamie Thomas is more relevant than Chris Cole.)

Ishod and Koston is the best comparison. Universally loved extroverts who can skate everything well and people around them overlook their dorkiness (Ishod is less corny than Koston though).

KB is the new Antwuan Dixon if anything. Straight raw talent and skill level then piling out on booze. Like Twan was with Baker, KB puts out little footage but whatever is released is undeniable.

my logic on reynolds/joslin is they are what i'd call stair crushers. few handrails but lots of flip tricks down huge gaps. also factoring in popularity/how well known they are.
ishod/koston are contest killers and extremely talented on any obstacle or terrain.
villani/barletta both have cool lazy style and dork tricks
zion/bastien young dudes who are naturally gifted and have athletic prowess, likely to shape the future of skating
foy/thomas are the handrail guys

I completely agree with you. You may be reading too much into the comparisons. Skateboarding being based on people's individuality, it is pretty derogatory for a certain skater to 'be' another skater in the first place, isn't it? One is just setting themselves up for failure if they actually try and go for such a goal (that's unattainable anyway), as personality is what people want to see; so if anything, you'll just look cute in your little costume.
There will never be another Kalis but I still find the phenomenon interesting and intriguing as fuck. I get honoring a time period you grew up in, or linked to a place you grew up in, and naturally incorporating little tributes in your skating style, that's sick and probably natural. But Bilyeu's dedication to that cause is something else; I for one don't care when he (or anyone really) nerds out on OG pants and shoes, but the trademark Kalis form on that switch 360 flip bump to can just reeks of both spiritual and physical sacrifice, I love it.

The Niels Bennett kid reminds me of Mark Suciu mixed with Jack Sabback. I think its pretty sick but definitely see the Suciu influence.
