Title: Best/favorite Small skater owned companies
Post by: Horsemeat on July 10, 2018, 01:34:16 AM
What are your favorite small independent brands for all parts of your setup?

I’ve been really liking the Quasi 8.5 proto and have been wanting to update the rest of my setup with smaller companies
Got a set of ace 55s coming
Also picking up some sml wheels
Any thoughts for bearings?

This whole grimplestix shit is bumming me out. I really don’t like the idea of an established group shitting on up and comers for doing their own thing. Feels so trashy and petty.

Just wanted to do what I can to support people who are trying to get something going.

This reminds me of those put your money where your mouth is threads.

Not that I’ve ever ridden one but I’m a big fan of DOA, I just like what he’s doing with it and he’s a flat board purist like me

Magenta Skateboards is an awesome company out of France. Cool artsy graphics and great videos. Really like the shape of their popsicles just wish they had some bigger sizes.

I've heard really good things about Modus but haven't tried them. Seems like they've got a distro company that started around them that handles Aussie distro for ripndip and Nike which could be an issue if you're trying to cut any and all ties to big or questionable companies, but it looks like Modus came first if that makes any difference.

Scumco & sons is the best.
Just hate that they use different woodshops. Even though they use a few different ones the decks are solid still and they hook up Kyle Nicholson.

Most of the Theories camp is gold too.

Carpet seems solid but never had any of their product.

As for bearings I just stick to Black Panther ceramics. Amazing bearings for a good price.

Bought a pair of Proper footwear. Good shoes but went back to Blazers 😶

I'm assuming it's the ABEC rating, but their website does nothing to distinguish the $8 difference other than white shields and better packaging lol.

As far as what I consider small, Green Door Skateboards (and Records) and Lurkville Skateboards, both out of San Diego. Zero and Black Label, small compared to other brands.

35th has some on sale:
http://www.35thave.com/shop/Skate/Decks/DOA.htm (http://www.35thave.com/shop/Skate/Decks/DOA.htm)
faskates(the shop not Dill&Ave) has the new run of boards:
http://www.faskates.com/brands/dead-on-arrival (http://www.faskates.com/brands/dead-on-arrival)
One thing to keep in mind is they come in two different shapes/concaves.  I would just make sure you check and get the mellow concave ones rather than the y2K(steep) concave ones if you want a flatter board.  Also l heard they self-immolate if you set them up with phillips hardware.

This is pretty much what I use instagram for, finding smaller brands and gauging through time whether I like their stuff/want to support them. Hadn't heard of Heated Wheel or Olympia—will keep an eye out.

Currently on radar with varying degrees of enthusiasm:

Killing Floor
Carpet
Blood Wizard
The Friend Ship
Canal
Scumco
Chrystie
Isle
Centaur Hawai'i
DOA
Sea Rat
Dial Tone
Blast
Homework
Orbs
Doyenne
Super Toxic Urethane
Straye
Quasi
Alltimers
Quartersnacks

TBD which of these actually end up getting my dosh. Brand suggestions always welcome.
