... lame skateboarding trends in the mid to late 90s thread.
i was a victim of
the d3 craze. i had a pair in black w/ red lining.

beanies all year.
cargo shorts.
camo pants with big pockets.
beer city blanks & wheels.
sxe band stickers on all my boards. Ten Yard Fight anybody?
wore a hook ups & an american zero shirt with no shame. kill me now.
illusion flips. frontside flips with no flip in ém.
then the surplus penny footage & cliche europa came out and i had t-shirts wrapped around my head.
there are plenty of others but i cant think of any right now. share yours.

In the summer I sometimes do tricks over my backpack in this tennis court by the beach, shirtless, in swim trucks, with an mp3 player.
I shop at West 49 more than my local shop because it's closer and cheaper. Although my shop did open a location by the skatepark so this might change.
I only skate eBay blanks.
Hurley t-shirts. Many of them.
-
Definitely that whole scout belt with it folding down near the crotch... one of my scout belts had a bottle opener underneath the clip part, so LEGIT :P

-
I had those muska Circas with the stash pocket when I was in middle school, and D3's in a heinous navy blue and yellow. I was siked on how reflective the sides of the d3's were, hahah. I don't recall anything except wearing the fisherman hats because Ronnie Creager is my hero. I also had a brown shoe fetish but could never source a pair. Brown Axions were what I wanted...then Axion went under. Once I was able to finally obtain a pair of brown shoes (not Axions), I had already become too stricken by my black shoe fetish so I gave them away.

I was reading through this thread trying to gauge my own wackiness over the years, but I still feel like the biggest one (kook). Here goes.
Vision Street Wear Beret
upside-down bolts in front to give more ollie power
Jimmy'z
Ghetto Wear
Hell Concave
Natas' streetwear brand (the shit was just some stiff fucking canvas/denim shit, goddamn you Natas)
Ratnuts in the nose of my Mark Gonzales "Color my friends" deck=crazy serrated nose when the shit eventually chipped up and they all fell out.
G&S chromoly trucks
World Industries/prime wood (from probably when Vallely rode for them to when Plan B shutdown, with the exception of some New Deal)
Deadbolt trucks
Blind Jeans
shants (huge shorts nearly the size of pants)
Big Deals (New Deal brand humungo size jeans)
The whole fucking Goofy Boy kit (bleached hair, huge jeans, huge t-shirt down to the knees)
small ass wheels (38mm-42mm brand new!)
Bridge bolts
Flex fits
Being "east-coast" when the Subzero video came out (rode a 8.5" board with 60mm wheels for street and skating shitty spots on purpose).
Benihanas on flat or over gaps.
I might finish this list someday. The only redeeming thing for me is I never rode Z-rollers or those velcro Zerotwo shoes.
-
baggy ass JNCOs
frosted tips
chain wallet
walkman rockin the Limp Bizkit or Korn or whatever my friends liked at the time.
bring on the kooks for this one but dude Soaps were a good time
and after Sorry came out I tried to learn to do all my flip tricks so i could land cross-footed (ala Bastien down that 3 set)
This thread is sick

-Horrible grind king trucks....I think they were called the Axles or some shit. Either way, they were extra flimsy.
-Giant, Puffy and white Airwalk shoes.
-I did the zip-off shorts for a while too.
-Doo-ragging for sure.
-
i was convinced that if i got those webb trucks that id be able to do a kickflip cause my thunders were "too heavy"

iwore d3 2001s with some extremely tight pants........i was whack........i still am whack

KR3W pants. i am so ashamed that i ever wore those fucking pants.
-
Me and my friends spent a lot of time in this one skate shop asking to hold different trucks so we could see which were heavier. They went out of business but even if they hadn't I don't think i could show my face there again. Phantom II's were light as fuck as were Ti-Lites incase anyones wondering, haha.

Darkstar tshirts (emphasis on the plural)
Shorty's tshirt
fiber lights when they first came out, I skated through like 5 of them
I had the grind king axl trucks (possibly the only trucks I've ever snapped a kingpin on...and did so probably 3 times)
CCS and Active catalogs to school.
Having a skate magazine in my binder that I would sneak and look at every second I could in class. I guess that was a good thing unlike the rest.

My friend and I used to session a Ramptech kicker ramp like it was the coolest object on the planet
Tail drops off things to flat
Bomb drops not down stairs but just off of random high shit we'd see
Way back when I very first started I wore a bucket hat sometimes
I wore size large tshirts when I was a freshman. I wear size small now and I'm 23. To this day I am confused by that decision. The only good to come of it is I still have a Spitfire shirt or two from back then that is safe to say isn't too small.
Carrying a backpack to sessions weighted down with tons of unnecessary shit including vhs vids...you know, just in case
edit: Slayer hat with two local bands' pins on it
-

(probably mentioned all of these earlier, but...)
-Never owned any of these, but I so longed for phantom, kreeper and webb trucks, as well as bulletproof and aircraft boards.
-Only skate-oriented thing my dad ever got me was a powell monster board complete from ccs. They still send me catalogs to this day.
-Owned both Chany shoes when he was on Converse, as well as adidas torrents since you could find all of the above at Zumiez outlets or even Fred Meyers for $15.
-Before I could ollie I'd justify doing bonelesses, boneless finger-flips and other mockeries of real skateboarding by telling people I only skate "oldschool". If
I'd continued on that wayward path, I could easily have become Doug Brown.
-Beaming the cam for the first couple years I was introduced to filming with friends.
-The ability to do hardflips every which way, all spinning perfectly vertical and occasionally flipping the wrong way as intended ala T-Bone.
-Hardflip late-flips.
-Hardflip stink-bug finger-flips.
-Bennihanna shuvits and fingerflips.
-Lazy or "willie" grinds.
-Not touching my local miniramp until my very late teens.
-Member of the Illenium Sticker Flow Team.
-Fury trucks.
-Jnco's, wallet chains and Korn shirts.
-Filming at parks (with seriousness)
-Stair counting.
-
i got into juggling because of the video caught clean and im not saying thats a bad thing i know some of you will though there was some amazing stuff on that video.
-

Flexfit Lakai hat that I wore for like 8 months.
Power-Ollies off of everything.
Destructos.
Bright green tiny wheels.
-
kickflip body varials,
x factor ramps,
cky.
-
chain wallet because of hensley but i was pretty good about everything else.
no big pants, no crazy get ups, no stupid hats or regular looking shoes.
-
My parents didn't really have the money to buy me stupid skate shit when I was growing up... I was bummed at the time, but now I'm pretty stoked.
-Basketball jerseys
-Fagging out over the new CCS and Active catalogs
-X Factor flatbar and ramps
-Desperately wanting a pair of Tensors
-Skate backpacks
-
taking bites out of still beating shark hearts
-
-Shortys
-Flexfit Caps
-Tensors
I'll post more when I think of them.
-

Baggy jeans, mainly JNCO's
Putting folded socks in shoes to make the tongue puffy.
D3's
BAM products
Wearing Hook-Up shirts, I thought I was cool.
Going ape shit over any thing new from World Industries or Blind.
CCS was my only "skate shop" and I eagerly waited for the catalogs.
I bought any skate companies that were in the Tony Hawk games
Corey Duffel clothing, fuckin high school years. I wore the tight punk band shirts, super skin tight pants, etc.

Talking in ebonics, cornrows, listening to 50 cent, southpole t-shirts, thinking I was awesome, keeping stickers on fitted hats, sagging low, and cornrows.
-
rolled up pants, thin vulc shoes, baseball shirts, beanie, riding wide dlx boards and wide trucks... oh wait.....!
-

trimming and recycling my boards down so they can have a little extra life.
skating a metal pole smaller than a curb
skating in my backyard
skating a friends backyard
rocking up at the local spot and seeing everyone push mongo and thinking i'm doing it wrong
and finally self filming at the skatepark with a fucking ancient camera
edit: one more
slappy noseslide grabs. seriously what the fuck was i thinking?
-
I was a Die-Hard Muska fan. Well, I still am, but 7 or 8 years ago, I used to skate with backpack, and paint my shoes pink because he skated pink Circas in X games.
Also,in one point, I was really into Jamie Thomas look, wearing flanels, long hair, big shoes and skinny blue thrashed jeans.
-
-left stickers on my new eras religiously
-ugly ass shoes in the brightest colors I could find
-thumbing through the new CCS and circling what I wanted
-i thought that being able to skateboard would translate into being able to snowboard, bought a setup, boots and all that, broke my arm the second day at the slopes and then my board got stolen...never again.
-hair gel
-wallet chain
-went to the warped tour twice in highschool
-once volunteered for a "stress evaluation" at a booth at the mall, realized halfway through it was a pitch for Scientology
-loved limp bizkit and linkin park, thought i was metal as fuck
-bought a backstreet boys CD in fifth grade because everyone else liked them
Those are the only ones I regret at all, oh well past is the past.

- sum 41, limp bizkit and d12 off of limewire and kazaa

also, what's wrong with krew pants? not too into the brand myself, but come on it's just pants. i'm wearing black k slims right now and they're comfy and a really nice fit.
-
"Wutz ur best trix?"
-
Best thread ever.
Swishy pants and CKY Adios in 8th-9th grade.
Cut up shirts and super skinny black jeans, trying to look like Greco/Boulala.
I took the time to learn about 10 pressure flip variations. I just learned another one last week.
Frontside flips a la Muska.
I'm a fan of The 'Nandez.
I tried to 5050 a 20 stair rail because of being too stoked on The 'Nandez.
Striped Fallen hoodies, but I never owned a pair of their shoes.
My first 3 boards were all Bam pro models.
I think this is all the embarrassing garbage.
-
I used to flip the bill upwards on my new era hats.
-
Pushing mongo, doing wrap-around pogos, caspers, having Mike V as a role model, there was a rumor going around that if you could kickflip, varial flip and heelflip on flat ground that you could get flow for Toy Machine back in 5th grade. There's been a lot of ridiculous stuff I've done or said or believed.
-
Once my friend gave me a cd with Really Sorry and Subject to Change..I was probably skating for a 1 back then, I didnt know shit about skate scene. I couldnt believe how Ali Boulala was in both videos, having 2 sponsors was insane to me.
-

lace on the wrist
i once repaired a shoe sole with duct tape, didn't work

getting a peter smolik autograph.
wanting titan trucks really bad
thinking vert skating is gay.
riding an indy/venture mix setup, that came in like a hotrod.
waxing rails at the park i couldn't even skate
the first video i saw was "ban this" bought it at a skateshop sale, it was already 15 years old, i was thinking skateboarding in the us seems to be different compared to europe, they have different boards and everything... told a friend showed him the video, he made fun of me for a entire year...
-
taking bites out of still beating shark hearts
omg the red dragons video... that shit will haunt me forever.
-
In 2002 I once had trucks consisting of Tensor baseplates and Destructo hangers.
-
In the second grade I told someone that I could McTwist, but I didn't really have ollies down. I didn't know what either of those tricks were.
