Sick stuff. What material do you use for your stencils? I've been having a hard time finding something I like.
If I'm just making a shirt or something I use thicker paper, but then you can only get one use out of it cause it shrivels as soon as spray paint hits it. I've used some plastic stuff before too, but you can't get nearly as intricate with your designs as you can with paper, or at least it's a lot harder.

Just try and find some 3/5 mil plastics at your local art store. Anything thinner than that is worthless and thicker is a pain to cut.

Well coming on here and soliciting yourself if really weak, but it's an exception because this dude's work is pretty rad.
If anyone takes offense to this thread feel free to delete it! I don't care if people purchase grip or not in the long run, not my bread and butter. Just a good place to get critiques, feedback and ideas...

I appreciate that AZ! Drawings definately where my heart is! Just have a hard time making heads or tails of what to do with them. Not always the best at networking! Seems to me that in the design industry there's quite a bit of who you know not what you know...

Thanks Rag! Album art is definately a good source of inspiration! Usually save those types of pieces for canvas though, especially when they involve lots of intricate cuts and multiple layers.

SK ur shit is very good and perfect but the SK logo is ugly and boring and wrecks all ur art, also u should take a color theory class or something cuz u use the wackest compination of colors in some of ur pieces. good shit tho jus trying to tell u some tips maybe to improve ur clean work

i recently had my first go at a randozzi-esque rimjob gripjob. i basically laid the unapplied grip on the board, used a big scissor to cut it and then added it piece by piece. worked better than expected, if i hadnt been distracted by family guy i would?ve cut the lines straight and it would?ve looked better. simply try it once, its fun. oh, and try to get a board with a brighter top layer, mine was dark-violet and you can hardly see the lines, looks a little weird.

I wouldn't consider it art at all since it's unoriginal and basic but it's cathartic. Gripping a board to me now is as calming as smoking weed to me was as a teen. Before anyone rips on the pink I'm aware it's lame and usually only use black but i got a roll for $25. I've started using crafting glue between the segments to avoid peel and it works pretty well.

My friend makes some really awesome grip and is amazing at making stencils. So when I have an idea I shoot it to him and he makes it. He's done my instagram one and a series of danger mouse characters for me. I'll try to get pics up when I can.

I've done a bunch over the past year. I really like being able to tie a memory down to something like griptape, so I can say "Oh yeah, I remember learning ___ on the board with, say, Jackie Kennedy on it." My friends hate it, because they get my hand downs usually, but whatever.
Not griptape art, but I bought a blank and paint penned a graphic, then sprayed clear coat on it to seal it / make it less sticky feeling.

I've done a bunch over the past year. I really like being able to tie a memory down to something like griptape, so I can say "Oh yeah, I remember learning ___ on the board with, say, Jackie Kennedy on it." My friends hate it, because they get my hand downs usually, but whatever.
Not griptape art, but I bought a blank and paint penned a graphic, then sprayed clear coat on it to seal it / make it less sticky feeling.

First off, props to all others posting their work.
Its cool to see how many different ways you can decorate your sandpaper.
Be it simple or time consuming, its really a signature on your set up.
How much of a bummer is it when you spend 3 hours on your grip and the board breaks in 10 minutes? I remember this happening a few times. On the flip side; I know I rode a lot of my designs till the board was thrashed beyond beat. It was like having a design I was stoked on made me ride the board longer than I would otherwise.
From about '97 till 2008; I made some sort of design on every board I skated. Basically all through my 20s. I'd guess around 250 - 300 boards. I've managed to hold onto the below 60 in some form. Here's some photos.

The first 2 years or so my technique was like this early example. Draw the design on the back. Cut it out with a razor. Make all those cut out pieces a little smaller with a pair of scissors. Then stick all these little grip scrapes in their spot. Eventually, I ended up just removing pieces to create an image.

Over the years, I made maybe 15 Chinese characters. They were always some of my favorites. I remember one of the early ones, I drew it as you see it; and it wasn't until I'd cut it out that I realized it was backwards. Had to get another sheet. Wasn't a total loss as I used the fuckup as a stencil. So it was fast to redraw. Sometimes drawing the design took longer than cutting out the pieces. This one meant "Dream"

damn dat snake is dope. whenever i use paint marker on my grip it always ends up fading so i can never ever use paint marker. i freehand spraypainted some grip recently and made a video of it. hmu 4 customs if you dare.

Looks like he printed out a picture, stuck it to his board temporarily and then put clear griptape over it to keep it in place + show the picture.

The griptape covers the top and bottom of the picture so it doesn't lift from that, and it's held down to the wood with a little wood glue

Next time, you could use clear shipping tape to stick the paper down, then grip over the parts you don't want exposed. That's how I've seen it done.

Next time, you could use clear shipping tape to stick the paper down, then grip over the parts you don't want exposed. That's how I've seen it done.

haha, I gotcha. The only time I've ever had an issue with stripping bolts was when I would use an electric drill to put my boards together. Having my own skate key has made the issue non-existent for me.

Thanks mah man. Unfortunately a certain Kyle Mcdonald bought it the second my local shop put it in their inventory. I gotta say those were made some time ago.. I thought grip tape art was a thing of the past for the last 2-3 years until now.

I'd want the stuff to look good but not affect the grippiness at all. Also spraying isn't gonna work for what I want to do and those paint markers are a bitch as they get fucked up and you can only get rather thick lines with them.

i just use deco color painters pens. they're cheap and they won't fuck up the grippiness. get the thinner ones if you're worried about thick lines.

I used it in the past and thought it was pretty good. The colors underneath were a bit muted, but you could still see through it clearly. The grit was really visible as well so that might be detrimental if you're doing something with very fine details, but I'd back it for the most part.

Made a collage with cutouts from my last ever university textbook might as well get my monies worth; this is with minilogo clear grip and it looks good. It does show the grit more than others but I have found that MOB clear grip is the worst in terms of image clarity.

I’ve thought about making grip art. But I’m concerned it will lessen the grit of the grip tape and make it less grippy. Can anyone attest to this?

it should not really affect the quality of the grip. just if you use too much paint it will later over “sand” just try and you will see how it works for you.
also the clear mob looses grip so fast and turns into a fucking sticker after 2-3 weeks of skating it.
really disappointed with that.

That's really nice!
I haven't noticed it affecting grip at all even in grips I let my friends' kids paint and they didn't thin out the paint with water enough to make painting a lot easier even though i told them a million times. :D

It's like skating. Keep at it and don't be too critical of yourself if you don't happen to create a masterpiece right away and you'll get better and better. It's fun as hell IMO and with grip art at least for me it's kind of an easy medium as it's temporary anyway so I don't have to care too much about it. :)

I've found stencils to work best when doing grip art, also paint pens are rad but like someone else has said too much will fuck you up and disappoint you.
Too much art and it looks like dogshit or gum on your grip that's why I either go for stencils and cutouts with a sticker underneath.

Mob used to be the clearest but doesn’t last longer d looses grip fast. But recently a lot of others started making more clear stuff, so you can try a few. Iron horse is not as clear but stays the way it feels new.

I usually draw a straight line on the back of the grip and cut it out then. ^^

I once spent 3 hours with a grip job and that deck broke after 2 hours ^^

Thank you both. It was a labor of love. I don't think I will do the next one with the same method because it felt like it took forever BUT I am pleased with the results so...
I drew out the pattern on some large paper until I got it about right then started cutting the pattern piece but leaving connector pieces every few inches. Then I traced onto the grip backing (it really helps to start with a flat sheet or if yours has been rolled to lay it out flat for a few days beforehand). Then I started cutting the grip from the packing side leaving little tabs uncut here and there to keep the pattern in place.
The whole sheet was applied and then the little tabs were cut out from the top.
It was a process.

Whenever I tried to do something different, it always ended up looking like I used grip tape scraps from a shop.

I like calligraphy, especially black letter and ’calligraffiti’ stuff, but I feel slightly like an egomaniac putting ”messages” on display for other people to see… so I usually just write something simple just for the fun of it. It does also fuck up the markers pretty fast when writing on griptape.
Maybe one day I’ll get over myself and use some color, or a larger format.
