Title: JT Appreciation
Post by: Asylum on January 02, 2008, 05:42:41 PM
How often do we get industry leaders that are as down to earth and mellow as this guy ? He takes some time off his day of running a bunch of companies just to post on Slap and give us some good industry wisdom as opposed to the usual hating that goes on here.  Here's to you Jaime, THANK YOU for your contributions to skateboarding and thank you for keeping skateboarding gnarly as fuck.
Asylum has been supporting you guys since back in the day, we're proud to have your brands on our wall. We're proud to have Anthony Shultz on our team as well.  Keep doing what you're doing, you're doing it right.

And to all you haters out there that think JT's nuts are on my chin, there's a thing called respect in skateboarding. Jaime earned it.

Mr. Thomas, you are one of the last skaters in the industry that knows whats going on. Instead of turning into a faceless sell out that only cares about making the next quick buck like so many others have, you have remained true to skateboarding and you are just an all around great person.
Your skating is insane.
Your products are great.

Lets just let this thread chill here and fade into obscurity. I would avoid it, but I'm too afraid there might be some worth while beef that might come up.

Welcome To Hell, Misled Youth, and Chomp on This were very inspirational to me as a teenager....I mean I was just ollieing off loading docks and shit like that but The Who and Iron Maiden were in my brain pretending to be Jamie Thomas.

Jamie definitely knows how to film and make good videos/parts that will go down in history as some of the best videos ever.

Props to The Chief.

I reckon the gap he does off a stairway platform over a gap into a parking lot in his section in the old Emerica video 'Yellow' was bigger, plus it looks 10x scarier.

i think he definitely appreciates all things skateboarding...

a friend of mine who was am back in the day went to a demo with his now current ex-girlfriend that jamie was skating in.  my friend's gf wanted to get jamie's autograph and made my friend (the former am) stand in line and wait.  when they got to the front of the line, jamie looked up and said to my friend "you're __________.  you had a picture in transworld and you skated for __________".

the fact that jamie had remembered someone from a photo that was shot at least 5 years prior to this demo from an am that didn't make it to the top of the am-dog pile is impressive.  dude is definitely is a student of the game and loves skateboarding.

i give him props for that.  it made my friend's day.

I wasn't really into JT for a while, then he had that Transworld interview where I believe it was all shot in one day.  Every trick in it was pretty much at the front-lines of progression.  I couldn't believe it at the time.  From there on out, I've been a total fan.  Every trick he does is gold.

I'm not a Christian by any means, but I try not to hold that against him.  He's just trying to do what he believes is the best.

My dad doesn't give two shits about skating, doesn't get it, doesn't take it seriously. One day a few years ago he was in my room using my computer or something as I was watching an old VHS copy of Welcome to Hell. I randomly looked over my shoulder at him during Jamie's part and he was staring at the screen, squinting... mesmerized. I smiled. During JT's last few tricks all my dad could say was, "You gotta be fucking kidding me." The man's skating commands respect.

Probably one the top 3 most influential dudes in skateboarding, with the skills to back it up.  Great businessman too, I mean coming on SLAP when Black Box hate was outrageous, and winning (almost) everyone over?  Genius.  I still love Dying To Live, looking back it's kinda like the Fully Flared of the handrail era, several similarities.

Thrill of it all was my go to video back when I really started skating. Just seeing people push the level of skating the way JT and other did in that video was rad, and the leap of faith is still one of the most epic things, fuck mega ramps, leap of faith was raw, I'd take 1 leap of faith bail over anything on a mega ramp any day.
