Title: Ululation (Stereo : A Visual Sound)
Post by: Miadaskate on March 06, 2009, 09:14:29 AM

Does anyone have some of their music?

...Perhaps I should post this in the Music section...

Ululation might be close to impossible to finding on vinyl or any other form, I think Pastras mentions in the commentary of the dvd something along the lines that they were some chick's Dad's band he was friends with and she just gave him a tape of the music to use and made it sound like it was sort of an offcut thing as opposed to mass produced, their record label doesn't exist anymore as well, so who knows.

Isn't he playing it with Fowler and a couple of others? Dude should just stick up an MP3 to download.

Yo guys, Chris P. here... this is my first time trying to post anything so hopefully it works. Yes that is me and Ethan Fowler on Tincan. Good idea to try and post some of the songs as MP3's...I will look at doing that. We always wanted to put out a CD of the old stuff, maybe when we do a deluxe version of the box set in the future. Interviews, extra photos, footage, etc. Thanks for the link to this Mark and thanks guys for all the kind words on the Stereo music. Also A Visual Sound is correct I got the music from a friend, Hilayann, her Dad had passed away but her Mom had the music and granted us the rights thankfully. We were really stoked on how it worked in the video, and thought it unique to sort of "score" the video to that music. Thanks again

Sounds pretty cool. You should definitely add the Ethan Fowler and Sean Young Wizard of Oz song if you decide to do the MP3 thing.  I've been looking for that song for years now.

Being one of the few people on the planet who owns the Ululation record, here's a little info about it for anyone who cares:

Ululation (both the name of the band and the record) was the work of John Lee Krasnow and his septet. It was recorded in 1987, and put out by Krasnow under the label "Long Shot Records." When he died a few years later, that was pretty much the end of the label and the record. I don't believe it ever even made it to CD - several of the band members I've talked to didn't even have a copy, or only had it on vinyl, so it's safe to say it's pretty much impossible to get a copy at this point.

It was a mission of mine for years to track down the record. I finally ended up acquiring a vinyl copy of it from the same friend that Chris first heard the music from. I would gladly post it for anyone to download, but Highlyann Krasnow (the friend - and daughter of the late bandleader) has asked me not to make it available online yet because she is working on a website, due to be completed soon, where all the Ululation music (including a bunch that's never been released) will be available, so I'm gonna respect her wishes on that.

The record is amazing and totally unique and since Chris has poked his head in here, I gotta thank him for bringing it to our attention. I think it's safe to say that without A Visual Sound, very few people outside of the New York jazz scene would ever have stumbled across that music.

Will do. In the meantime, there's an interview with Krasnow that's been floating around the web for ages here:

You can at least hear a couple of the tunes in their entirety (crappy sound quality, but oh well...)

Hi this is Highlyann and my father, John Lee Krasnow was the one who composed and played on the Ululation albums (yes there are two.) The first one was used by Chris in the Stereo video (thanks again Chris.) Only a couple of copies of the album were made before his death. The good news is that the album has been picked up by a record company, Wax Poetics and both albums are being in the process of being rerealesed.  If anyone is interested you can contact [email protected]. In addition my sister and I are in the process of building a website in our fathers memory www.ululationmusic.com which will be up in mid spring 2009. Thanks all for supporting the music.

Well, I can't seem to get ahold of Highlyann or anybody from wax poetics about this, & since it's been a few years now, I'm going to assume the reissue isn't happening. If anyone gets ahold of me & tells me the records will still be released somehow I'll take this link down right away, but lots of dudes have been clamoring for this record for a long time now & the music is just too damn good to stay hidden away forever. So, for now, I give you Ululation, ripped direct from my vinyl copy. Get it while you can, & be sure and support the reissue project - if it ever happens - by buying a legit copy.

Hey bandini : super lame.
Sure the reissue is taking for ever to come out and trust me, I REALLY can't wait (as I wrote the Wax Po article/put Highlyann and wax Po in contact to reissue it/wrote the reissue liner notes), but what gives you the right to just ruin Highlyann and Krasnow's family right to actually get a chunk of what's theirs (meaning : money)? Oh yeah, impatience. That's great. It's just sort of direspectful to Krasnow's legacy, and Ululation in general that you claim to love so much, I'd say. But again I'm an old fart who still BUYS music i love to give back so I'm probably wrong, right?
Not to those who will go ahead and purchase the reissue, whenever it comes out : it will contain a whole unreleased LP of songs (some from A Visual Sound;s soundtrack) that werern't on the original LP that came out. Just saying.
Title: Re: Ululation (Stereo : A Visual Sound)
Post by: bandini on August 03, 2011, 03:38:49 PM
Hey Seb - There's no need to be a dick about it - I said I'd gladly remove the link if the reissue was still happening. I made a concerted effort to get some info about it (including sending multiple e-mails to Wax Po) and could not turn up a single bit of info anywhere, which led me to believe the project is dead.

If that's not the case, can you give us any info on what's happening with the reissue? That would be a lot more helpful than sarcasm and insults - especially directed at the few people on the planet who are really interested in supporting this music.

You 'll remove the link sure, but how many people that downloaded it will actually buy it after that? Again, I'm old.
And i still think it's disrespectful, it's not an insult or sarcasm. I just don't see what's point you're making when you know a reissue project is in the works -besides to be perceived as the hero who saved the day? I don't know you and i'm sure you did it with the best intentions but I just can judge from the outcome. Actually that second, never-heard LP was never pressed at all, so these tracks, at east, will escape the internet voracity until it's out.

On the more informative side :
What's happening is that basically the mag/label almost closed doors when the crisis hit in 2009 -what sucks is that Ulu was gonna be the next reissue to come out when they had to postpone all their reissue projects, it pretty much missed the cut by, like, three weeks. And since then, they've needed a financial partner/sponsor for it to come out but nobody in the skate industry that I tried to help them hook up with seems ready to cough up the remaining money for the LPs to actually be pressed. There was one at some point in the Spring of 2011, but they backed down, which brought the reissue to square one. That's all I know for now.
And mind you that I've benn DYING for this to come out, as you imagine.

Well, since you yourself just informed us that the reissue will contain a bunch of music NOT included in the original LP, I would assume all 3 of the people who downloaded it from here will probably be extremely interested in buying the reissue.

Quote
I just don't see what's point you're making when you know a reissue project is in the works

As I already stated numerous times, it certainly looked to me like the project was dead, & I wouldn't have posted the link otherwise. If that ISN'T the case, maybe you & WP might consider taking a little responsibility for that misconception? When years roll by & we hear NOTHING from you, we tend to assume nothing's in the works.

Anyway, all that aside, I appreciate the info you've shared here - keeping the fans in the loop is ALWAYS a good idea, particularly if you're interested in keeping them from sharing their copies of the music.: ) It sounds like, while the deal isn't dead, it's pretty damn close, & at this point there's not a lot of reason to think we'll be seeing the reissues any time soon.

HOWEVER, out of respect to Highlyann, I have gone ahead & removed the link & deleted the file. I hope the folks at WP get their shit together, because this music deserves to be heard, and at a certain point, the few people who have it are just going to start sharing it amongst themselves (I'm amazed no one else has posted it online up till now - just goes to show how few people have it, I guess).

Anyway, for now, we'll keep our fingers crossed & hope things come together.

thanks -

I don't know about anyone else who made it in time for that link, but I definitely WILL be buying the reissue now (if it ever comes out). Quality music like this just shouldn't be hidden away.

Its a real tragedy that nobody in the skate world is willing to put up the money for this. If you start up a paypal or something I'm sure people on here (including me) would chip in. Wheres Pastras at??

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Releasing a handful of tracks for free, to drum up interest, would also be a good idea. There's not even a single mention of the project on WP's website.

It's kind of silly, in a way, to imagine that there's really much money to be made on this to begin with. The goal should just be to get the stuff OUT THERE. Dump the whole goofy vinyl plan & release the stuff as digital downloads. That wouldn't require any further money to make happen, and the music could start generating some money for the label and the family, as well as getting distributed.

Who knows what would happen from there?

bandini, I totally understand now what you mean : I know it's still in the works, but not everybody does -sorry if my response came out a bit harsh, it's just the weird surprise effect to see something that you worked so hard on kind of comes out of left field like that. definitely no beef, and to tell you the truth it gets a bit nerve-racking for me too : every so often I get an email saying it's coming out and that I should send updated liner notes cause THE new sponsor is coming in, then the new sponsor backs out for a reason or another. Super-frustrating on my end too. So, yeahm, touchy subject over here to huh huh.

I'm definitely forwarding them this little conversation thingy so they know riots are ahead in the skate world if that album is not coming out soon!

I will too propose that subscription thing for sure. Even though quite a chunk of money is still missing, that might work, you never know.

I'm definitely forwarding them this little conversation thingy so they know riots are ahead in the skate world if that album is not coming out soon!

Ha - now, we're talking! Ululation fans are gettin uppity... beware!: )

Hey! The ULULATION double LP will be reissued in 2014 on my label (www.reelheavy.wordpress.com (http://www.reelheavy.wordpress.com)) -it will consist of the first Ululation LP, plus the second one that never came out, and that actually bares a few songs from A Visual Sound on it (such as the Mike Frazier tune etc) --it's a long process, that got tanked for a few years, but Wax Poetics is gracefully hanfding me the publishing rights on this, so, all good! I will of course let the world know over here when it's about to be out!
Hold tight duuuudes...

Man, iv'e been trying to find Pao "Mr. Sunshine" from the Matt Rodriguez tincan folkelore part forever. I always thought it would be sick to release a record along side a skate video. A vinyl visual sound/tincan folklore LP would be so sick.

I emailed Seb a while ago about it, he said he was having a lot of trouble with communicating with John Lee Krasnow's daughter, who has the original Ululation tapes, but that it was in progress still. Apparently she wasn't answering his calls for a year or something but I think he said he was about to be acquiring some of the tapes.

Hi guys
Prince : yes it's exactly stil the case and we are still stuck at square one. The difference is that I think my patience has worn out now. It's so crazy, because I know Highlyenn really wants her dad's music to be out again, and especially reach the skaters who made his album legendary. I went all the way to meeting her in Brooklyn last january, she was super cool and honored and said she had collected most of the master tapes for Ululation 1, and that they were on her desk ready to ship... After a couple texts she vanished away again, at first she said she wanted to wait for all the tapes to be collected in the Spring of 2014 (some were in their family house in Vermont), but after that : incommunicado.

I re-emailed her yesterday after seeing the post being bumped again, because I'm getting as bummed as you guys, but for all I know if communication is that bad BEFORE we even start any of the reissuing process (which takes A LOT of communication), I think I might just give up. It's too much stress, I spent a lot of time on this already and can't afford to lose any more on passion alone --the dream with reissuing "rare" music like that being to just break even (Unless you stumble upon Sixto "SugarMan" rodriguez, that is).

So... again, super stoked to see that so many people are still into this, but super bummed that nothing will be happening right now. I'd rather not give any tentative dates, so I guess people who wanted to share the files can because it seems to be the only way that Ululation will be heard again at this point, and if ever by miracle these tapes ever reached I'd let everybody know on the Slap board and would go into the reissuing process in a heartbeat... It just doesn't look like it's happening this second... I'd make the release special enough that you'd want to buy it even if you downloaded the files before, ha !

Alrighty, in light of the recent info, here, once again, is the 1st Ululation record, ripped from my vinyl copy. Enjoy, dudes.

And anyone who has the 2nd record, I hope you'll throw that up - I still have never heard that stuff.

Big thanks to Seb for all his efforts on this one over the years. He put more time & energy into trying to make this happen than anyone.

The second record only exists as this red tape --it does have some of the songs from the Stereo vid on it that weren't on Ulu 1... That was never actually released.

Hi all, apologies for reviving an absolutely ancient thread, but I was wondering if as of 2018 that reissue of Ululation's second LP ever came to fruition? I'm absolutely in love with the first track that plays over the opening montage of A Visual Sound, I believe it's called Cruel and Unusual? This track frustratingly is one of those unreleased ones that isn't on the first LP and I really would love to hear a full version. If anyone has any info on this I would be very grateful for an update. This thread seems like the best hope I could find on the internet of ever getting the full track.

Somewhat similar - does anyone have Nate Jones song from Six Newell and Fred Gall's from Mosaic?

Nate Jones' is by his own band. Fred's is by the Greenhornes. Both, from what I can tell, were made specifically from their respective videos (kinda like OP). Anybody out there?

Bumping this ancient thread once again to ask if anyone has Highlyann Krasnow's contact info so we can get Ululation II onto the internet. Does Seb Carayol still lurk here? It sounds like he was the only Slap user to have that lady's number. Also, did Dune ever put out that A Visual Sound boxset?
