I'd say it is a humanizing aspect of somebody who would otherwise be indistinguishable from complete garbage.

i guess gipper kinda has a point, i remember watching some limp bizkit 'behind the music' or some such shit a few years back, and they had footage of fred as a teen skating his backyard ramp, which is kinda cool, but at the same time...its fucking fred durst so whatever
