Title: L.A. Noire
Post by: Smell Good on April 27, 2010, 08:16:23 PM
You mean to tell me that I could live out my fantasy of being a mid-20th century hardboiled detective in the same vein as Phillip Marlowe or Sam Spade? Sign me the fuck up. Hard drinking and fast talking tough guys, dangerous dames, etc. etc.

Rockstar games killing it as usual.

Looks pretty sick, sort of like Chinatown and LA Confidential in a game

And im almost 100% sure the main character is based off the "Mad Men" actor who plays Ken Cosgrove

I said the same exact thing. I don't think he has the world weary look of a hardboiled dick though. Still, this game is going to be the shit

hyped for this.

isn't the guy from mad men doing the voice acting for the main character?

That is indeed him. Some sort of new facial expression motion capture technology. I don't believe the game will be free roam in the same style as GTA and RedDead though. But should still be extremely fun.

I'm quietly anticipating this one.

It's on my list of 2011 titles that I'm buying. I've been off of videogames for long time.

seems like a good idea done badly judging by that video about the technology. i guess it could just be the acting but it looks fucked, way overdone with the faces. that being said i can see it becoming awesome in the future when it gets tweaked etc.

Watched a bunch of reviews, seems this game is a little misleading from the trailers

It is not similar to Red Dead Redemption, it is in a way, but not in the same sense that you can go around blasting random people and killing anyone. You can't pull out your gun unless you need it specifically for a mission. Even when driving, you can't hit people or lamp posts without getting a poor "case rating" at the end of any mission.

It has roughly a 12 hour campaign and is much more linear than Red Dead or GTA. The game is heavily focused on detective work and investigation, apparently is gets slow paced at times.

Regardless, I will be buying this game. The reviews have all been very strong, and I like the idea of going through a crime scene for clues.

Feels like this will be a lot like Heavy Rain but Sandbox style and set in the 40's

Stoked

Only had time to play through the tutorial missions before I had to get going on school stuff. Seems interesting that you spend such little time as a beat cop. I thought they'd have you on the ground for the while feeling the city out before they had you in a department going case to case. Doesn't seem like you get too involved with the city as a whole which is kind of a shame because exploration was always among my favourite aspects of the other Rockstar games. Definitely not opposed to a badass approach to a point/click adventure game though.

its been raining here so i picked up a copy and got a solid 5/6 hour session in.
definitely agree with mooley on the lack of exploration/engagement with the city because its huge.
i wish they would have incorporated that in somehow. overall its pretty impressive though.
visually stunning and has an engaging story line. as an avid gamer and enthusiast, i think the bar
is set pretty high and i'm looking forward to seeing how this will shape games in the future.
i wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who thinks it'll be anything like gta or red dead redemption
but definitely worth checking out.

This game is really unlike any game I've played. so far I'm only ranked ten but I love having to search for clues and reading peoples facial expressions when asking them questions. Plus the map is huge.

Has anyone come across this yet? I haven't.

Played up till the end of disc 1 so far. It seems with games like these the endings are always somewhat underwhelming.

I'm probably 3 or 4 hours in and loving it so far.

It's not action packed but it's fucking enjoyable just cruising around L.A.

Currently on disc three. Arson's boring as shit compared to being on Traffic or Vice.

so does it get any more engaging? I'm not to far in, but it's kinda been a snoozefest. I think I play about 90% of the game with one hand. Not to mention you can answer everything wrong and the game still moves forward. Putting GTA in the title was a bit misleading, this has no satire and the gameplay is completely linear.

Best single player experience in a long time. I feel like I got my money's worth for sure. That said I am probably selling/trading it sometime soon.

Was quite disappointed with how easy the game/achievements were to be honest, only took a few days to get the 1000G. The story was awesome, though.

It's a great game. I love that it feels like a detective movie out of the early 1900s

The partner you get on the vice cases is an even bigger pain in the ass.

Now I'm actually starting to like Rusty. Originally I hated him because he was a sack of shit that complained about women and sat back while I took gunfire. Now I'm actually liking him for that same reasons.

360 version really has 3 discs?  I feel ripped off now.  I could have pretended like they rereleased Final Fantasy VII if I had XBox.  Damn you Sony and your blu-ray convenience!

I'm still pretty broken up about one of the cases. I feel like I picked the wrong guy based on who the Captain was pressuring me to pick. Anybody that's played through the Homicide ranks knows what I'm talking about.

So do the choices you make in the game really affect anything? Or can you just be wrong all the time?

I haven't played the game, I just saw South Park dissing it.

if you get all the questions wrong it makes to story mode longer and more challenging, so you can get every thing wrong it will just make it even longer

Actually yes they do affect the game, also the way you approach the cases affect the game. there will be like 2 or 3 places to go during a case and depending on where you pick is where the story takes you. You can miss evidence that could have helped you beat the case way way faster. I found the game fairly interesting and so did my brother. I wasnt aware that the xbox had 3 discs though.

Game has a giant arc.  Sorry guys, but the second half of the game was fucking awful.

Spoiler Alert

By the end of the game your not even solving crimes, just playing through them.  I thought this was going to be one of those games that I would pick up again down the line and play through again because it was so good, but it seems to me half way through production they just said fuck it and finished it as fast as possible.  Playing through the second half was such a bummer.
