Title: Manufacturer of Habitat's Hemp, Bamboo, and Cork Decks ?
Post by: NYCasphaltSurfer on May 15, 2010, 10:32:49 AM

Does anyone know who is pressing these decks for Habitat?

I know that Comet was making the Habitat eco-ply decks in Ithaca, NY. The Habitat cork decks have "MADE IN U.S.A." stamped on them, but that doesn't really mean anything these days...

It means that you can't always trust what a little sticker claims to be true. I know for a fact that some of the decks that have "MADE IN THE U.S.A." stickers on them were actually manufactured in China or Mexico.

Anyway, I'm not claiming that the Habitat decks aren't made in the U.S.

I'm thinking (hoping) that Comet is pressing all of the Habitat Hemp, Bamboo, and Cork decks in their Ithaca factory, but wanted to find out if anyone knew this for sure...

I remember reading only a few of the "steps" to processing a deck have to be in the USA to get that sticker.  IE the whole board from start to finish doesn't nessecarilly have to be in the USA alone.

when I was living in ithaca habitat's bamboo stuff was all made at comet. I believe the wood was coming in from the finger lakes region of upstate ny, as well as eastern canada.

in terms of quality...you can't really ask for much better when the wood is coming in from within 100 miles...pressed in town, shipped a few miles to homegrown skateshop. I know the shelter in albany was using comet wood for their shop decks, dunno if they're still on that tip or if the new shop in town, seasons, is using comet for their shop decks. if you live in the area and can get your hands on some fresh comet wood, you're in for a treat and the board will last forever.
