Title: Moving to Australia...?
Post by: sexualhelon on June 27, 2010, 08:29:00 PM
So I've got the opportunity to move to Australia in the next year if I feel so inclined. I have lived all over the u.s. and currently in S.D. but feel that maybe the change would be good for me. I've definitely done my research and feel pretty aware of the basic pros/cons but have never actually been there and am curious on a skateboarder's perspective between the two. I don't want to just list off my lists of reasons why and why not off the bat...I'd rather hear some opinions first. Anyone able to compare? I'm thinking sydney/melbourne specifically.

Sydney and Melbourne?  it could be a fairly long comparison.  I  lived in both, melbourne for 4 years and sydney for a year and a half now.  I prefer sydney.  but people really like melbourne so I don't know what to tell you.  for me, melbourne could be anywhere in the world and is boring.  I like outside stuff so sydney is better for me.  but with that said melbourne is easy to get around, has a lot of good skating and is cheaper.

I grew up in Brisbane and now I'm living in Melbourne after spending the last 6 years living in London, England.

I prefer Melbourne to Sydney. Mellower vibe, a bit more cultured, easy to get around and good skate parks/spots.

nuh uh. thats amazing.

cost of living is high in oz compared to most places in the US (especially the price of beer and liquor), but wages are a bit higher to compensate. there are a ton of skateparks. if you're near the coast the beaches are amazing. i can't wait to move back there in a couple years.

Alright so there's a few replies already so I'll say what my theories on the pros/cons are without actually having been there.
Pros:
-I feel like the quality of life would be better
-not so many crazy religious people, dumb politics, gun problems
-I feel like Australian women are a little more approachable and I'd be stoked on their accent and them on mine
-Most every Australian I've met has been super awesome and I got along with pretty well and we had similar mentalities I'd say.
-I hate the way Americans take alcohol and sex so seriously and also tend to be less well traveled than Australians.
-Health care seems a little better and at the very least on par with the U.S.
-Australia has second highest minimum wage in world...something around 22 dollars I think.
-No tipping culture...This is a double edged sword I suppose because some people say you make more with tips but then in the U.S. when you go out you have to tip as well. I'd rather not deal with it.
Cons:
-Seems pretty isolated
-Not as diverse
-In the U.S., South America, Canada, and the Caribbean islands aren't too far away for little trips and I feel also that cities within the U.S. have more distinct personalities....Miami to New York to LA to Seattle where as in Australia I feel I'd pretty much stick to Sydney and Melbourne with the closest international destination being Singapore for me. But in actuality people tend to stay in the city they live in for the most part.
-I hear racism is a problem?
-Skating is a little more low key. Here in SoCal all the little kids and guys worried about getting sponsored kills me...and everyone here seems like they were born with a long board. I just want to skate for fun.

So just for reference, I live in San Diego and this is the only place I really see myself living in the U.S. -Australia is the only country I really see myself permanently migrating to.....As much as I love the Netherlands, my original heritage, and Barcelona I'm now a U.S. citizen and it's nearly impossible to gain citizenship in the EU. I feel like I'm forgetting something but this post is long enough.... thoughts? And can anyone compare San Diego to Sydney or Melbourne?

i spent a month skating and getting completely shitfaced every night in sidyney, melbourne, and up the gold coast.  i seriously considered moving there.

pros:
- spots are incredible.  so many crazy spots that i thought were in barcelona are there.  and the ground in the cities is so smooth.  you can just cruise around everywhere on smooth ground.  it's great.
- almost all of the girls are skinny, hot, and easy.  they have good style, too.

cons:
- food is fucking terrible.  maybe it was just b/c we didn't know where to go, but it was really bad almost everywhere.  it was all like weird fish n chips w/ mayonaise and just generally awful.

i liked melbourne more than sydney but if you like SD, then sydney's probably a better choice.  it's sort of like SD w/ a bigger city feel.  i thought melbourne had more of an east coast vibe - more culture, grittier, the spots were less of a bust, etc.  good luck.

I don't know what you're on about. Not sure where you stayed but there are great places to eat EVERYWHERE around Melbourne and Sydney. The spots are great and can be found just about anywhere. From my experiences the girls are better in Sydney and in Queensland than in Melbourne but that's a pretty bias opinion.
You also need to realize that everything is over priced in Oz and the Ozzy dollar is pretty strong against the US dollar at the moment. A board in the shops over here will cost you between $80 to $100 US dollars. Booze and drugs are pricey too compared to Europe and US.

the best is being all drunk at 4am, seeing the bakery is open and everything is straight out of the oven.

ship a box of 10 boards to yourself and you're set. it sucks to not support local shops, but it's so expensive there that when i move back i'm just going to stock up every time i visit the US. local companies are a fair bit cheaper and some (not sure about nowadays) used to be pretty decent.

So this kind of peaked and died really fast but you guys gave me some great insight and I've decided to take the plunge and move to Australia. Pretty much, I put my car up for sale and I'm waiting on that. As soon as it sales, I'm putting in my 30 day notice on my lease and 2 week notice at my job. I've already got my visa. Fuuuuuuck. Pretty crazy, seeing as how I've never been to Australia. Of course...This is all subject to change but I've 90% made up my mind to do it unless some great opportunity pops up in the meantime. Can't say anything's necessarily for certain till I'm on a plane though.

If you have the chance, DO IT. You can always come back. Its an amazing place and skating there is so sick.

You shouldn't be worried about isolation. The south pacific has a lot to offer. New Zealand is dope. Bali is there ad its wayyy cheaper than hawaii. I'm assuming there's cheap flights to Japan and China.

I'd do it. I'm jealous

I'm actually going from la, to nyc for a bit, then london, and THEN Australia but all this stokeness makes me want to skip nyc and london...just head straight there. i've been to australia 3 times. i stayed in melbourne once, sydney once, than a little beach town in sydney called bondi beach. i like melbourne better than sydney except for the fact that bondi beach is in sydney. i feel like bondi beach is the best place in the world. australia is definitely my favorite place in the whole world. the only thing that i really didnt like was that there isnt mexican food anywhere and thats pretty much a staple in my diet. in my experience the girls walk up to the guys in australia and as soon as they find out your from the US its a wrap. definitely good times over there...

All good news to me. I hate mexican food and it actually kind of pisses me off being here in SoCal that all people want to eat is mexican food and when I'm like "that shit sucks" it's almost like people get offended by it. Thai, Indian, and sushi is where it's at. Oh and bakeries too.

Bay area is pretty legit...I'd probably live in Berkeley if I was gonna move up there. NSW, specifically Sydney, or at least that's where I'm going to start off. A lot of people say they prefer Melbourne which I'm going to check out as well. I've got a working holiday visa that's good for 2 years and in that time, assuming I would actually want to permanently migrate to australia, I have some friends down there who say they can most likely hook it up with work sponsor.

I am 31 years old.  I actually live about 3 blocks from waterloo, near the mcdonald's down the hill and yes, last year I didn't have a job for a while so I would skate the park every morning before people got there and no matter what time I got there shantell would be there it was weird.

I don't know anybody here, I skate with beerkeg when he comes up from melbourne and some random people at redfern oval.  I would like to know people to skate with but I am poor at that for some reason.  didn't really know anybody to skate with in melbourne either and I was there for almost 5 years.

Sexualhelon,

new years would be good, i will have a couple weeks off work and I don't think we are going back to the US this year.  Plus the beach is so good then.  let me know.  there are some other sydney slap people I believe so we could probably get them involved.

Nah, I look pretty normal.  I just haven't really put any effort into finding people to skate with.  I hope that guy is wearing sunblock or he is in trouble.  They tore that building down.

The best shop is 99 degrees on Oxford street.
The best spot to meet up is Hyde park or waterloo. A lots of spots got nobbed downtown but Martin Place is fun. Youtube it. If you like tranition there's Bondi and Five Dock. If you're from the US, bring as much product as possible. Decks are about 90 USD there.
The buses/train system is really good but you can skate to most places.
Stay away from redfern at 3am. I thought I was going to get shanked skating through there. Also the area below kings cross is weird. That's where the wavy hubbbas are that BA bluntslid.

go to the beach as much as possible.

Thanks , seems the decks are cheaper in Oz then what Im used to getting here , so cheaper decks are great .

I mostly skate manual stuff and ledges , and come Oz I will put extra effort to tranny , so miniramp and parks would be the best for me.

Ill try to avoid redfern like the plaue , and the beach is for days off work . best feeling in the world after a rough week at work , go down and sleep on the beach a extra hour with the ipod on . was the ruitine in south of france anyways .

If any locals wanna hook up for skating or beers let me know , Ill be busy with work the first month but after that it will slow down alittle so hit me up

Just returned to Seoul a few weeks ago from a nice vacation around Australia, Melbourne and Sindney.   Pretty sick, from your original couple of posts i think you would really enjoy it there, i have nothing negative to say about Australia.  i think for myself personally, Asia is a better fit, but i sort of grew up all over the place in Argentina, to DC, to japan and now Seoul.   Australia for sure ranks up there with all those of those places.  (which are all sick)

Someone else mentioned the travel ability there, that should not be overlooked.   you have all of asia in your grasps as well as new zealand and the south pacific islands.  once in a lifetime opportunity man, and you only live once.  DO IT.

15 days to I leave , Flying to london first and then a nice 22 hour flight to sydney . Will be my first time in england / UK , and my longest flight ever , last was 10 hours to america , so it gets beaten by 12 hours , not bad .

getting reeaaaaaalllyyyy  stoked and excited .

trying to find some online shop but google is kinda not helping , would be best if I had a name of a skateshop , the 99 one didnt have a web shop

how is the prices for

Decks  ?
trucks  ?
wheels  ?
Marlbro  ?

If its super expensive for pro decks maybe some local Oz company has cheaper ?  Hoon maybe ? .

You got cup a noodles ?  poptarts ?  , I heard some stuff that burger king is under some other name in australia ?  .

This will help with the prices question

http://www.skateboard.com.au/ (http://www.skateboard.com.au/)

just look at the shop section, should give you an idea.

shop decks are cheaper or there is ebay

Cigarettes are expensive, I think over 10 aud a pack but I don't smoke so don't really know.

Burger King is called Hungry Jacks, there were Burger kings for a short while but they are gone

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_Jack%27s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_Jack%27s)

Grocery food is more expensive than the US especially since the australian dollar is almost on par with the american dollar

The most legit shop in the country and run by the best dudes. Not to mention the fact that they have way more bargains than anywhere else.

Few days deep

Sydney is fucking sick . Found the 3x 3 down , 4 big down , at pit street , the big black thingy , sick spot just as big as it is in the movies
Also seems to have find some bank thingy down in the harbour , 3 or 4 of them at the maritime exhebition area , think they were in fully flared .

Still trying to find my way here I get lost pretty much every 5 mins , but thats the way I like it . The party seems good and the girls are banging . Lots of fine ass australian girls and tons of asian girls . only missing some latin ones and its a perfect mix hah .

gonna look for the skate shop on oxford street tomorrow , and I found redfern last night , didnt seem to sketchy .

Skating seems pretty good here but alot of stuff is knobbed or blocked , need to get with some locals or have more time here if I want
to find the really good spots I guess .

If I like the job and I get it I can deff see myself doing afew years down here . Pretty fucking stoked

So rad dude.  You're taking me back two years reading that.  99 Degrees is sick...the dudes working there were super friendly to me.  They wrote me out a list of parks and spots and which bus routes to take to get around.  There's so much to see in Sydney it's insane.

Here's a few things you should add to your list of things to do:
Take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly Beach.  It's like this rad little beach town over there with a completely different pace, but it's actually still completely within Sydney.  Some of my craziest nights in Sydney were there.  From there north is all the Northern Beaches, each of them has their own little community built around it with little shops and just rad shit.

Go to North Sydney.  It's like a whole other city over there and it's fucking rad.  Plus there's some amazing parks up there too.

I dunno if you have yet, but hit up Bondi Beach.  It's insane.  The most famous beach in Australia and it's packed all the time.  As far as a beach goes it's definitely not the best, but just as an experience it's insane.  There's literally thousands of people there.  Plus it has the Bondi Bowl, which kept me going back there almost everyday for a full month.  And from there south, there is a whole other group of beaches which are equally rad with their own shops and communities.  Maroubra (about 5 or 6 beaches south of Bondi) also has a skatepark.

Also...look up Fivedock bowl if you're at all into transition skating.  It's a fucking trek to get there (way out of downtown) but it's apparently the biggest bowl in the southern hemisphere and it's so fun.

AND EAT PIES!!!!

You're definitely doing it right though my friend.  Just go get lost in that place.  The sheer amount of stuff you while find to do and see is insane.

Here's a helpful hint for you...if you're willing to take some risk.  At all the major bus and train stations...there's automatic ticket dispensors.  There's a trick that will get you on any bus, train and ferry for 24 hours for only $2.50.  Buy the sunday funday pass.  It's a mistake in their system (hopefully they haven't fixed it) but you can buy that pass any day of the week.  It will work in for every bus, train and ferry in all of Sydney and anywhere CityRail operates.  Basically you can go for about 3 hours from Sydney in each direction on that $2.50 pass.  If you ever get caught (I did once in 4 months I was there) I just acted confused, said someone recommended this ticket to me, and showed the officer my Canadian ID.  They were super nice about it and just told me to buy the right ticket next time.

They changed the sunday funday ticket I think.  You have to have a child with you now.

So, Monty Burns, what problems did you have with your visa? Fuck, you guys are making me wish I was in Australia but I'm looking forward to Europe. I've been in London for about a week... Fucking expensive and Englands so dreary. Tube sucks too. headed to amsterdam this weekend for Halloween, the spending a few days in berlin and prague before I go work for a few weeks in Perugia, Italy. After that I'm gonna go backpack Eastern Europe....Gonna be cold as shit but I can't wait for everything to be cheap and Eastern European women are soooo hot. All in all, it's looking like it's gonna be a few months before I make it down to Oz but I can't wait to send out some messages and go shred. Fuckin' ay, I'll take Australian and Asian ladies over latin women any day of the week! I always found a huge draw towards australian women just to be that every one of them I've met has been super fucking cool and stoked on my accent.

Aaaaaaah, yeah I have. Total misrepresentation of hostels. If that movie was a fair depiction of how hostels really are, it would be closer to a porno than a horror movie. Honestly, what's the ratio of people you know who've gotten laid at hostels vs. people who never came back?

Hostels are either really good or really bad depending on the crowd and what you're trying to do. Know what sucks worse though? Fucking dorm rooms. I'm staying in my friends dorm in "greater london", meaning I'm a 15 minute train ride from the actual city, and all the kids here are way more annoying than any hostel I've stayed in. Staying with a friend in the city tomorrow though then heading to amsterdam saturday.  Question though - are you just there on a working holiday visa? If so, finding a job is that easy?

Oh man , best skate day yet

Frekkin insomnia , so went out looking for waterloo oval skate park at 3 AM , bombing hills down to sydney uni , and then kinda got way lost , well I was lost the whole time , so many hills to bomb and no traffic , some slow hills some faster .

Ended up at redfern at 4 am , dont find redfern sketchy at all , all the ppl I ran into were helpful when I asked them for the way . Police station helped me in the end , and I found the place ,

pretty small park with no lights at night , shit miniramp that you slip out on so easy , metal ramps suck !   had a fun session . ended at around 5am ,  lost again and found kingscross , and from there up to oxford street ,

Bombed from the top of oxford street down against the court room thing , where the park is towards  pit street , had 2 green lights and just went for it , speeed wobbles on my board and by some frekkin miricle I didnt wipe out but just jumped and ran and didnt even fall over

some of those hill bombings today were sketchy and scary as fuck , but fucking fun .

Smiling all night on this shit , really like sydney so far

Did Chima Fergeson had some interview with pictures of a bs 360 down some set ? if that was in sydney and near circular quay , fuck man then that shit is so gnarly , saw it today and checked it out , dude is a beast if that was the set , rough down hill landing and high as fuck

Oh if the dude that tried to film that varial heel down that set today on pittstreet sees this , hope u made it !

There are lights at waterloo oval but I don't know how late they stay on.  plus they haven't been on lately because of the construction apparently. you skated really far.

Maybe you should join skateboard.com.au forums and see if you can find a place through there.  skate house style.

That's the spot.  It's fucking INSANE!!!  Seeing is believing at that spot.

Sounds like you're having a fucking blast.  Your entire description just took me back two years.  Wish I was there right now.

If you wanna see another rad spot that is fucking insane...check out the inside of Sydney Harbour Bridge.  You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.

Also...like rfox mentioned... www.skateboard.com.au (http://www.skateboard.com.au) is amazing.  I was on that site almost daily for my entire trip.  I've still got it bookmarked.

Is Kings Cross as sketch as people make it sound?

I mean I'm from Chicago so I gotta think Kings Cross is tame relative to what goes on in most big cities(Same with Redfern according to you).

All this seems pretty cool overall. I really want to move there, if shit doesn't work out here

Kings cross miight be abit weird but not sketchy , havent been anywhere sketchy since i came to sydney , Im sure if u are unlucky
you could get in trouble , but that can happen any city in any area

skating is pretty good here , but skatestoppers everywhere , and if not the ground is fucked up , but sometimes they space it weird and you can still skate it , the streets are shit alot of the time , but some nice hill bombing

never been scared or anything in sydney , most anoying ppl here are the british tourists , I always love british chefs , and skaters , but Im sorry the standard british tourist is the worst . Im sure most brits are nice but when you go out of your country for hollidays u act like idiots

Im not sure if you mean all the ledges that are under the bridge  ? or what , I actualy went across the bridge to see if there was something there ?? but hahah , other side , north side, of sydney seems more relaxed then south side innner city . but did u mean the ledges ???  anyways they are kinda screened off by construction right now so sucks to be me

the chinma gap is on Essex street near circular key , fucking shit that gap is gnarly .

there will be epic skating going down this weekend though oh yes , there will be ,

gonna try to hit up martins plaza thing too , but I dont skate gaps , but end of this trip I want to film some tricks down the big 4 . but lets see if that ever happens , it looks pretty big , specialy since I never skate gaps or stairs .

Oh I wouldnt worry too much , the 4 month break I took + the amount of work hours I usualy pull , leaves me with a permanent suckyness in skating , but atleast here in australia I have more chanses to skate thanks to the weather .

Hopefully I will be in good skate shape after afew months and maybe start skating some gaps again , but I dont want to get hurt either for work , and at 28 Im pretty much scared to skate big stuff and get hurt

but lets see if I can get down that in less then a year , Id be stoked

Have you checked out Martin Place, Chifley or the Darling Harbour brick banks? All really great spots but you can only really skate them on the weekend/night. Also the rail that Chima bs 360's is also really close to the double bank that Dane ollie's in his Strange World part.

King's Cross isn't as bad as the media make it out to be. I've been there many times on Friday/Saturday night. There are always fights but if you aren't looking for one then you are pretty safe. I remember there was a shooting outside a club and the police had to place taped up, there was a bit of blood on the pavement but that's about the gnarliest thing I've seen there.

Were the lights on at Waterloo when you went there? I heard they aren't bringing them back on until the youth center is completed and they don't seem to be a hurry to finish it. There is also a little plaza you can skate a couple of streets up from the Waterloo park on another football oval which is pretty fun and there's a mini bowl at Ward Park in Surry Hills which is about a 5/10 minute skate from there. Anyway, glad you're enjoying your stay.

Sounds like you're having a blast montyburns. I'm can't wait to get there myself, especially since I'm in Italy right now.....which is full of Italians. The only thing you can get here is Italian food. No peanut butter anywhere here which makes me really want a pb & j. The only coffee you can get is espresso shots. From here, I think I'm catching a flight to the Ukraine then backpacking down to Istanbul, catching a flight to bangkok because it's actually cheaper to fly there from istanbul then from bk to australia. Eastern European are beautiful but every time  I meet an Australian girl they're super fucking cool. Oh....and no skating over here. I'm so ready to skate...just been carrying my board around the whole time here. Also, the australian dollar just broke even with the usd and the euro is killing the dollar. 150 euros equals 206 dollars. In australia I'm going to have pretty much the same job I had in the US with a far better wage so I'll just see the currency breaking even as  a good thing.  But hey, do things seems expensive over there or pretty reasonable relative to your wage? Also I've been having a lot of people recommend melbourne over sydney so what's the comparison there? Pretty much got my sites set on sydney but I know the public transit in melbourne is better.

Yeah, it seems that most the people who tell me how bad sydney sucks are melbourne natives....or just moved there because they hated sydney. Speaking of my prior post on italy and not being able to get peanut butter - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/article5622156.ece (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/article5622156.ece) - Coincidence? I think not.

Fuck yeah! A super session would be a sick way to start off in Oz! I was wanting to make it there by new years but doubt I will....it's possible though. I'm flying to Krakow Tuesday and the going L'vov - Budapest - Belgrade - somewhere in Romania - Somewhere in Bulgaria - then Istanbul. From Istanbul I'm gonna fly to Bangkok, even though it's a shithole, and then Sydney and stay in Oz for as long as I can. Probably going to try and do all those eastern European cities pretty fast though, like 3 or 4 days in each city, and the only reason I'm going to bangkok is because I found a ticket from Istanbul to there for 400 and then a ticket from there to Sydney for 300. I'm ready to be in Australia though, pretty fuckin' cold over here and not really getting any skating down. So far, Australian women and Dutch women are still my top 2. Eastern European women are super hot but a lot of them tend to be a little weird once you get to chatting with them. So...at the latest I'm planning on being there by mid January unless some random opportunity that's too good for me to pass up comes along...which I don't really see happening. Plus, I can actually work and get paid in Australia since I have a working holiday visa and gots to have enough dolla dolla bills to be able to pay a few months rent and living expenses once I get there.

Has a great day with fox , I skated afew hours , and then watched skate vids and drank beer with fox and his lovely wife . very nice ppl both of them .

skating is going so so , work is keeping me bussy as fuck , and Im tired on my days off but I think ive skated all my days off and will continue to do so . Redfern oval and waterloo oval are my 2 favorit spots , warm up at redfern then go to waterloo

learning the places , and the train system , trains kinda suck in sydney , busses might be better but I like trains , most ppl said I would like melbourne better then sydney , but I really like it here , fox said I would hate it in melbourne . who knows , I live here now anyways .

Im down to skate all days I have free from work , but Im fucking tired so dont expect me to be doing any 6 hour sessions , few hours and Im dead and want food or alcohol

got a place to stay now , I live in newtown , love this neighbourhood , lots of ppl with party in mind , tattoos , hipsters , punks , punkrockers and so on  , lots of cafes and restaurants , fun shops and so on .  dont think I could have found a better place to stay

special thanks to fox and his wife , making my start in sydney sooooooo much easier .

Ahhh so the day has finally come. I'll be in Melbourne Wednesday morning. I'm thinking I'll hang out there for a week, see how I'm liking it, and then either rent a flat there or venture up to Sydney. I ended up spending a good bit of time in Eastern Europe....so far it's my favorite region traveled to. People are nice, really hospitable, the women BEAUTIFUL, and the cheapest things are beer and cigarettes. Worked on a farm in Italy for a bit -I fucking hate Italy, did some English tutoring in Poland, one of my favorite countries, and ended up staying in krakow for about a month, then I rented a flat in Belgrade for a month. Went to every country in the dinaric alps. I'm in Bangkok right now. So stoked to be heading to Australia on Tuesday though. Will be able to talk to people, work a steady job, get some decent coffee, and skate.

Leaving A.S.A.P.

Anyone want to tell me about their job experiences and knowledge?

Also perhaps outline the benefits of living in Sydney vs. Melbourne & vice versa.

Cheers.

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxZiae16Ry8#)
Alright so I've been in Melbourne for about a week now and I can give you my take on here thus far.  That video above, well that's pretty much been what I've seen in Melbourne so far. I've gone out to some bars but it's been kind of boring so far. People told me before I came here that there was more life in the suburbs than the city, at least at night, which is a weird concept to me but it seems pretty true. Definitely expensive compared to the states...and most places I feel. This past weekend I went to this music festival called great plains an hour or so out of Melbourne. Oh man, all the bands sucked and again...all people like the dudes in that video. I've never seen so many guys wearing short shorts and scarves in one place. Ah and tons of people made unwarranted comments about me being American which left a bad taste in my mouth. That aside though, Melbourne ain't so bad. Lots of cafes and nice looking ladies with good skate spots. A lot of people say they prefer Melbourne to Sydney because it's more liveable and cheaper while sydney is too fast paced and more expensive. I don't really think sydney would seem so fast paced to me though coming from cities like LA, NYC, and London but I'm quite ready to check sydney out. Definitely going to check out sydney before I decide where to rent a place first. Newtown sounds like a sick place to look around the way Monty Burns described it. I'm gonna check flights to sydney for this weekend right now.

haha i presume you're talking about coming from the UK? i've lived here for the past 2 months or so and so far the weather's been a lot like an english summer rainy overcast days mixed with pleasant sunny ones, never too hot though. just don't imagine melbourne weather is perfect because it's in australia, it isn't.

I used to skate there every day when I lived in Geelong. It's fun.

PM me if you want to go skate or grab a beer or something sexualhelon (if you're still in melbourne that is). If you split I can certainly understand why, 90% of the people here suck really hard.

I might come up to Sydney around easter-ish time if you guys want to shrad the g-nar.

Perth has a good scene, it's so isolated though that prems and demos never really reach there.

climate and family are the biggest draw, but i have to wait until i get citizenship here before i can even consider it. currency wise it'll be back down to 80 cents US before soon, anyway.

I was supposed to move to Sydney or Melbourne and live/work there for two years. Los Angeles is where I was living before I headed that way and spent 6 months in Eastern Europe then made a stopover to visit a friend in Bangkok - Nothing new though I've traveled a lot but had never been to Australia. Price wise, It went from HOLY SHIT things are cheap, to SHIT things are still pretty cheap, to FUUUUCK this is the most expensive place I've ever been when I got to Australia. It's all relative though. If you live and work there, you save more just due to the price of things. Even so, I just figured if it's more expensive in Sydney than NYC I'm going to fucking NYC. Here I am. No regrets at all. Aside from moving in with two of the dirtiest, yet cute, girls ever and their 3 lame ass cats.

On another note though, the governments are pretty well set up and definitely take care of you more there. Scandinavia, Canada, and Australia always top the most livable places to live and quality of life indexes....however, I've come to find this most likely means boring to me. As the saying goes: In the U.S. if you have money, you can get the best of everything. If you don't, the government will leave you on the street to die.

Perth is good if you want to chill in a place that is not as pretentious as Melbourne or as busy as Sydney.

Employment is also easier, provided you have a working visa.

Cost wise its still fairly pricey, for board/rent it definitely has better conditions.

I would not say its better than the Eastern states skate wise seeing as though its a smaller city, but its not without its charm and they are a few spots you will recognize from a few recent high profile videos.

I love Sydney, best city in the world. Spots everywhere, summer kills it there. Close to the beach to go chill after skating. Pubs and chicks everywhere...and almost all the skaters are cool as. Mellow town.
Hit Hyde park on any sunday, after noon on the side with the big pond and the war memorial, and the boys will be having a session.
Guaranteed there will be beers afterwards and plenty of good times too.

I know you guys have already talked about how expensive Melbourne is, but I'm seriously considering doing an exchange program at Swinburne for a semester in about a year. I wouldn't be working or anything and would be there for about 3 months. I've been saving a butt load of guap to make this happen, anyone have any advice in housing, skating, etc. ?

All Swinburne campus have housing, not sure how much it is, but it's relatively cheap. Which campus were you thinking of attending? All Swinbournes have famous spots as well ;D

In regards to Skateboarding. Bring your own set up + spare board as it's well documented that shit here is super expensive. If there is anything in particular you wanted to skate, let us know.

Been to Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and I'd say Melbourne is the cruisiest. While it's quite expensive here, it's hard to find a job under 20AUD per hour so even if you work only say 20 hours a week, it's still easy life and you can eat good food , pay for rent which is just 80 bucks a week for me in a share house with awesome people and buy skate gear which is like 50-60 bucks for a shop deck which uses Toy Machine wood

Thought I would give some heads up on some posts around Sydney seeing as I have just joined the forums... the city has gotten shitter over the years after World Youth day arrived and iconic spots such as cook n phillip and cannonball got shut down, but there are spots if you look hard enough..
A real sick spot that not too many know about (yet is quite a bust during university hours) is in Sydney Uni. Basically this spot is one huge perfect long ledge that varies in heights as it goes along ( on the uni map [http://sydney.edu.au/maps/index.shtml] it is right next to 'cadigal green'). If you walk up the stairs adjacent to the spot there is a rail/stair spot that is kinda gnarly. Also if you can find the carpark nearby, across the road from the Rose Hotel, there is a rail gap spot which has been shredded over the years (on the first or second floor of the car park).
Another spot probably not known to non-locals is the porno blocks ledges, just off william street. Chuck a left off riley st from william and on the weekends the garage is closed and has varying sized black ledges which are pretty fun to skate/ also ledges on the other side of William st from here next to Club 77 that are skateable.
The botanical gardens next to the Conservatorium of music also has ledges, but again these can be a bust.
Decent 8 or 7 stair next to the sugarmill hotel in kings cross which has a two stair leading up to it.
Cant be fucked thinking of anymore places at the moment, but if you have any qualms about spots to skate/ places to drink/shop/eat/party, just lemme know, been living here for 25 years so happy to provide local wisdom.
