Title: Admire Or Retire?
Post by: Josh Hawkins, Please on January 25, 2011, 01:18:40 AM
With Supra putting legends on their payroll, are they are any pros out there that deserve checks even though they barely skate anymore?  (Judging from the amount of footage, photos, or ads the produce)  Which pros deserve to live off their name? if any?

How about since this dude doesn't exist anymore, you post names of an older pro skater, the next person says whether they should be admired or retire.
Mark Gonzales- Admire
Jason Lee- retire

 Darren Naverette- admire or retire?

It would be admirable if you both would retire from arguing.

No but seriously you guys should get together for a weekend and document it.

Saturday: Street and plaza type ledge stairs shit only, no transition allowed (example Stoner, Wilmington)
Sunday: Bowl and transition type park shit only, no street allowed (example San Pedro, Venice)

Let's see it.

That's why I thought there'd be doubts. If he was still cashing in element checks maybe, but him being on Blood Wizard is so rad. Good for that company to have such a classic name on their team and I don't think he asks too much money. More of a bro thing I guess, that's why I don't think he should "retire".

Chaz Ortiz on the other hand should keep making his energy drink sponsors happy and try to get a tv show or something. Nobody cares for him except for 12-year olds who follow the dew tour and like to see kf front board kf outs. As long as I don't have to see his pictures in my thrashers, he doesn't botter me. So no retiring, but I definitley don't admire him.

Speaking of the young guys who seem to be here to stay for a while.  Here's some pretty sick footage of Ryan Sheckler and Chaz Ortiz at the Dew Tour finals this summer.  It's all behind the scenes footage of them warming up and the riders meeting.  Pretty cool look into what goes on when the cameras aren't rolling.

you guys are being pretty loose on the admire thing.
there are probably only a handful of pros that should always have a board out, and can still be relevant in skateboarding even after they've "retired"

I actually hadn't seen that Kevin Taylor footage, and he's come out with a bunch since I said that, so I change my vote to admire.
Duncombe, haven't seen the blind video, but he seems like he's still on top of his game.

The Muska could get away with retiring, but I want more.

How about Koston?

Just got an email with a picture of two new Willy Santos decks.
So, Willy Santos.  (I don't think that has been said yet)

I'm a fan of Willy for sure, but I don't think my admiration is biased. Willy's been killing it hard since the early 90's, put out about 10 parts since then, and his part was probably the best in the new Birdhouse video. Plus he always puts out footage from their tours, most recent one was just months ago. His Syndrome park part from last year was sick too.

Running out of reasonable people to ask about... Mark Gutterman?

Kill yourself. colin mckay>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>grant taylor.

You speak from theory, not experience. You can't even drop in on vert. Stay out of it.

thats fucking nonsense, you dont have to drop in on vert to know that colin mckay is the shit. plus, you cant really compare those two skaters, but mckay is obviously a master so why bother.

Huf is supposed to have a retirement part similar to Heath's.

Colin Kennedy?

Oh wait, even better: Brian Sumner

damn that sucks about Keith. I was hoping he'd have a shared part with someone. heath's little retirement 'part' was weak. sorry to say, but that dude should have just had mindfield be his retirement part.

brian sumner..that guy has no relevence in 2011. I haven't even heard people talk about birdhouse since their video that came out what, three or 4 years ago? shit, hang it up sumner. seems like a nice guy but he's just taking up a spot from a young gun who's killing it

you're an idiot. He was claiming everything he said on here was based on skating experience and everything anybody else said was theory, then posted footage of him skating shitty on a miniramp, and got into a conversation he knows nothing about. I agree that Colin and McKay are stupid to compare, COTG's thing was always to compare tech vert ramp dudes to cement park rippers. McKay's got legend status for sure.

heaths last line made me gasp out loud, i dont care that was a sick retirement part. i think if you retire, you should get a highlight of your best tricks, and heath had the best tricks.  mindfield was his last real part, but i do agree with how emerica played it off the whole time like he would have a full part, at least dont be coy about it.

what about matt rodriguez?

i have a feeling schaaf is gonna retire too, man is getting older and seems like he has other interests (bikes, cars) than going out skating all day

Matt Rodriguez? Are you kidding me? ADMIRE.

Are you talking about Heath's hillbomb line? That was just kinda cool because of the attitude. That bump is huge, the hydrant is small, and the hill is mellow. Heath rips, but that wasn't his hammers. I find the complete lack of perception of hill steepness on here funny. The hill John gets worked on in OIAM was mellow, the one heath cruises is the gnarliest thing ever. Are we looking at the hill or just thinking that a guy you like bombing a hill is cool, one you don't like is "gravity"
