Steve-
Doesn't seem like the phone panned out too well, so I'll give it a shot here. To preface, I'm not really looking to get into a bunch of heated rhetoric about this, but I do feel like we should have some dialogue about this Mike Mo thing that's going on right now.
I'm not so na've as to think that he won't have his suitors over the course of time, nor am I going to try and deprive the guy of any opportunities he deems suitable for himself if he feels like the ones we provide aren't enough. However, I am a little taken aback about how aggressive and somewhat negative I understand the approach to have been.
On the one hand, I feel like the basic guideline for what we both do is 'for the skaters, by the skaters'. On the other, from what I've heard, some of what's being conveyed to Mike Mo is that Lakai will never be a company that can give him what's on offer outside of here. In essence, a sort of penalization for being run in a manner we both champion. A bit ironic.
I'm not saying Lakai is ever going to be a 500 million dollar company, but we've spent the better part of the last year fighting to get it somewhere it can be better than the third option, and we're finally in the closing stage of making that happen. Whereas in the past there may have been some non-skate element to help justify walking away from Lakai, that won't be the case going forward.
Even as a third option under pre-existing circumstance, Lakai has finally taken hold in the market and is showing great promise. Going forward, we're gong to bring in as many skateboarders as possible (employees and riders) to finally help us fulfill the potential we know is there. In doing so, I actually am confident we'll finally be able to grow to a level where we can give back to skateboarders and skateboarding comparably.
In closing, as I said before, I won't stand in the way of any decision Mike Mo decides to make when his contract expires at the end of the year. But I am asking that as someone who owns and runs a company under the same premise as us, that you reconsider before offering the idea that a skateboarder can't get the most out of skateboarding unless it's through a company that mostly profits outside of skateboarding.
As two people that are interested in keeping whatever commanding heights of the industry are left in the hands of skateboarders, I would like to think this is something we could both agree corresponds with our longer term ideals. If we truly want to get to a level where skate brands can provide the most for skateboarders, it seems like the overall message should be consistent no matter what the context.

I quit reading when I noticed all your apostrophes were replaced with question marks.

From who, to who?
Lakai is long overdue some good news.
-
To me it seems like Mike Mo is being courted to leave Lakai for DC by Steve Berra, and Rick Howard or whoever owns/TMs Lakai is trying to tell him to reconsider.

It's from Kelly Bird's Facebook.

In my opinion, Mike Mo wouldn't really suit DC, he seems like a DVS sort of person. But is not really gonna change that much, it's sill the same Mike Mo we all love and the same tricks, just different shoes/shirts.
-
steve...remember that time you tried to steal rick's, 'real cool black guy....' line?
-
Who cares Mike Mo is wack. I said it before and I'll say it again. 1 good video part should not equal a pro status or a career in skateboarding. He deserves no shoe sponsor

So he pulls all the annoying gerbs, skate trolls, and kids 6 and under with scooters away for the actually demo to the parking lot?? I guess I can see now why skate teams would bring him. He helps keep the demo under control for the real skaters to watch the real pros. Doesn't mean he needs to be sponsored or pro.

Mike Mo is gnarly. I said it before and I'll say it again. 2 great video parts should be equal a pro status or a career in skateboarding. He deserves a great shoe sponsor

wow, weird to have someone like Bird go out in the open like that,...

berra must have been ignoring his calls
i've been sick of berra for a while now, and i thought his exit from professional skateboarding would finally silence him a little bit, but it looks like his behind the scenes role is making him even more of a monster than before.

Skateboarding: come for the fun...stay for the drama.
-
kind of wonder if DC/Steve Berra went after Mike Taylor and Davis Torgerson in an attempt to bring Mike Mo to the team. Mike Mo seems to be decent friends with those dudes and if DC could pull Mike Mo that'd be huge for them because of all of the sales he'd bring in. IDK
And i'm not saying they'd do it just to get him because Mike Taylor and Davis Torgerson are amazing and can each stand on their own, but, who knows.
also, how is Evan Smith not pro yet? I thought he was this whole time hah

Haha harsh. I think the guys at Crailtap could still sway him. It sucks he has no sense of giving back to the people who brought him up but I guess if I was in his place I would be trying to get that chedda while I am still young and able to do so. OH THE CONFLICTS!

well hes still on girl, and he stayed on lakai for a long ass time. If olson and pappalardo got deals from shoe companies that made them leave,u dont think mike mo got any? Hes way more popular than olson and pappalardo, but he stuck out with lakai for years. I'm also fairly confident that mike and rick probably encouraged him to go get the money. If your on lakai with a pro shoe getting like 50k a year or w/e and dc comes and says they will pay you like 150-200k/year then where do you go? It would be a fucking dick move to be in rick/mikes position and call mo lame for leaving. Like you said, they helped bring him up, but not because he was a good investment (hey lets get this guy on he will make us tons of money, lets make him feel like one of us so he doesnt leave too), but because he was really talented and good friends with them. So as friends of mo, I'm sure they encouraged him and have no hard feelings if hes getting all these big offers, same as they did with olson and pappalardo.
Althought id rather see him on lakai. If he leaves girl then I'll agree with you. the guy you quoted is a fucking person btw.

Lakai Fully Flared Line-up
---------------------------
Poppalardo = Converse
Olson = Vans
Cairo = Etnies
Fernandez = Adidas
Koston = Nike
Mike Mo = DC?
I don't see why just one of these changes is such a big deal

How do you know the details of this decision, are you guys part of the inner circle and involved with the brand management duties? Not saying you're wrong, but you're also basically saying that Rick and Mike are horrible at business, which is a little weird seeing as how Girl is one of the better selling board brands (this can actually be proven based on research done by Transworld Business). My guess is that they put him on because he was really good and thus had potential to be popular, with the end result being he could move mad product. If that was why, then they were right about both things.
Here's a news flash: people actually get kicked off of teams for being perceived as "un-popular" and/or not moving product. Even Heath couldn't sell shit.
-
and mike mo is a pretty catchy name...
-
mike biber
-
whatever, he fits DC better anyway, get that $$$ playa
-
Who the devil is that girl under planman's posts? Is this the face that launched a thousand ships?
and anyone remember the TSM article from Lakai in Barcelona way back where they talk about the unidentified, unwanted, hanger- on with the dog until the last para where they admit it was the current marketing director of DC?
Served cold in consequence, if so! Basically Nike have made a break for the border to press home their advantage in a recession where everyone else is not waving but drowning and only two shoe brands have decided to follow the pacemaking break from the peloton with them: Adidas and DC.
-
While I personally don't skate lakai/girl products I can't fucking hate on them for how they handle themselves throughout all these 'team power moves'.
Rick\Mike\Spike etc all seem to act like 'people' and not faceless money grabbing cunts. They obviously want Lakai\Girl to be successful (and are doing so) but not at the expense of their friendships\ethics.
I'm sure there's execptions to this that people can find (I don't follow the industry super hard) but on the whole they do seem happy for their team. I think this stems from the fact that for the most part, the peoplet that they put on are firstly people they like and get on with, not just people to shift product. I'm sure shifting product is important to them, but not the be all and end all.
-
In other words, they don't know the first thing about business?
hint: by definition, it's to make $
I still find it odd that you guys jump to that conclusion. They sell and their marketing works... on you!
-
I 'm so late I still can't even figure out Mike Mo's name. Is "Mo" his middle name? Is it the 2nd half of his first name? I can't hope to formulate an opinion on his business moves if I can't even get the name thing straight...
-
I think it could all be summed up like this. Fuck Berra and Fuck Jeff Taylor. I don't care if Jesus Christ himself came back wearing DC branded Jesus sandals, DC WILL NEVER BE COOL AGAIN. They make fucking race car driving shoes, furry, fake Uggs for the chicks, and have basically taken the role of the bottom in their relationship with Monster energy drink. Hey, I',m not mad at Mo for getting paid, I just can't stand the way DC perpetrates their business.

I don't think that's what anyone is saying tbh. There's more than one way to conduct a business, it doesn't have to be all about the money. If it did there would be nothing but shitty ass corporations everywhere, and no 'ethical' brands or shit like that
either way it's not going to impact on my life one bit, outside of the internet

Rrrright. She seems quite keen- maybe I won't make her the mother of my children. Not much of a car- washer either.
After several hours one- handed research it turns out she's Colombian and 21 years old.
