Title: AUSTIN, TEXAS
Post by: kilgore. on February 01, 2012, 01:17:25 AM
i just moved here from S.F. and i'm in need of an actual apartment. i'm having a tough time finding one (craigslist.austin is crammed with realtors who seem to complicate every little thing) i work downtown and have a lot of free time to skate and drink beer. if anyone wants to indulge in skating or drinking or giving a shout where there's an opening to live (long shot i know) that'd be great. i'm essentially just trying to say i live here and what's up. or more what's cool to do here (i'm from Dallas and used to come down a lot but never got down to where i was on some local let's go here or there shit)

THANKS BROS

i live on the northwest side and mostly do family stuff so have no idea about bars and dives but if you feel like hitting up house park or cedar park, i'm always down for that when not busy. also a guy i know from cedar park has a sick 3 foot mini in his back yard here on the NW side and there's usually an old guy session once a week or so there. if you want to check it out let me know and i can text you when the next one gets set up.

i'm sure you've heard of all the well known spots like lego land, 5 hips, austin high, ect... but if you wanted to find spots the easiest way would probably be to go to no comply which is right next to house park and ask those guys.

Welcome to Austin. I was surprised about the realtor thing too when I came from the bay, but was told that's how most rentals were handled here. Quite a change from Oakland but give Rock & Roll Realty a shot, they're less annoying than most and will find you a cool place. Also, I got some really good responses when I put a "looking for room" ad.

Spots are easy, they're everywhere and skatespotter.com will show map locations of spots so that's easy if you know them by name.

Like Sleazy said, No Comply is a cool shop and good place to meet people. If you like the more punk rock kind of shop check out Apparition. We have a super mellow mini that's fun to mess around on and people are welcome to pull out the flatbar and parking block inside the store. This weekend will probably be wet so Capital is worth checking out. Fun place and Allen is a cool ass dude, definitely someone good to know if you want to get involved in the local skate scene.

Good luck man, welcome again.

Come to House Park and drink some beers and skate!

I kind of remember your handsome face from random pictures on here (creeper-status) so if I ever see you there I'll make sure to make you feel internet famous.

as far as bars go, the best bar in Austin is the Yellow Jacket Social Club.  It's run by a bunch of good friends, most of which skate, and the bar itself is rad.  There's also the Jackalope and Shakespeares, if you feel like doing the 6th Street thing.  Rad spot for art shows is Common House or Okay Mountain.  If you want to hug smelly hippies and swim near dog poops, go to the free side of Barton Springs.  I'll post more later if you're interested.  Oh, and don't go to black eye skate shop.  it's an empty storefront full of wind and ghosts

i concur with all things posted so far especially going to no-comply and yellow jacket.

also, go to trudy's, drink two mexican martinis, and then, get cut off.

been to yellowjacket, it's a nice blend of outside and inside drinking, i dug it.
i've been going to the grand on monday nights, it's a scene out of dazed and confused in there on mondays.
bars i remember i've gone to have been shangri la, liberty, side bar, barflys, and spiderhouse/29th street ballroom
i'm staying in a shitty area. north austin. N. Lamar and Airport. but might move to dean keeton and red river.

where is lego land located?

Legoland is in south Austin, as is 5-hips. Both worth the trip.

If you're near Lamar and Airport you're close the Patterson Park (cement miniramp) and about a mile from Apparition. Also not too far from Best Banks and the dept of transportation office with the DIY 4' vert quarterpipe built into the ditch.

Oh, since you asked about bars this place on Mopac/Parmer called Weirdos and they got a sick 5'ish mini out back. It's not public but if you get to know the guys that work the place they might let you skate it. You can see it from the hwy and it's worth checking out if you like to drink while you skate.
Title: Re: AUSTIN, TEXAS
Post by: Sleazy on February 12, 2012, 04:44:43 AM
i don't think wierdos would be worth the drive.

it's the wrong kind of dive and it's got the whole extreme bmx\motorcross bro vibe going on. i could totally imagine some shitty "grind core" type band playing with a mosh pit full of bro hawks going on while the epic bmx session was going down on the mini (all right after the volleyball tournement). plus the mini looked like it wouldn't be that fun to me. too tall and suspect construction with that weird corner thing that's unskatable as far as i can tell.

i'd rather get a 6 pack and hit up any other spot mentioned in this thread.

Never actually been in the place, just seen the ramp from the hwy and going on what I've been told. Gotta disagree, it looks potentially fun, trannys look good and it's pretty wide. 5-6' isn't very tall, just big enough to get decent speed and lock into the lip well. Personal preference.

The 1/2 vert ramp on the side does look weird but I can imagine coming out of a tailslide or 50-50 and cutting over to carve or toss ollies lower on the tranny, but most likely it would just be ignored by skaters. Again, haven't seen it up close.

Also agree it's not worth the drive for me just to hit it up, but dude said he's living in the north central area. If I was living around there I'd check it out for sure to see if it's worth dealing with some douchiness to skate it.

kilgore.... hit me up if you need tips around town. I am still here, and I am down to help a DFW transplant. I cannot really skate until May (2nd ACL surgery). I live down near the Yellow Jacket, and you can find me there a couple of times a week.

Welcome to town. I hope you sorted out a living space. Lamar/ Airport is a bit north for me, but nothing in Austin is more than a 20 minute drive.

We've been trying to spread the word about this show and backyard ramp session tomorrow. I'll be there skating from opening through the afternoon, hope some of you guys can make it. Come on, a miniramp and BYOB show for $5, can't really lose.

1808 is only about a mile from the shredhouse so if you get a free minute between 1 PM and midnight come by and skate. If you have an iPhone you can actually the see the ramp on satellite if you search maps for "2713 E 22nd st Austin"

Bummed I can't make any of the Thrasher party days, really want to swing by for the Cro Mags and Fear today but stuck in my office instead.

Have a good time in Austin.

1308 East 4th Street at a place called the Scoot Inn, in the east downtown area on the other side of hwy 35. I don't know about the weekend schedule but yesterday and today the last band for the Thrasher/Cons party played at 5 PM so it's a good noon-6 kind of thing, then they had a separate SxSw showcase in the evening. They aren't great about posting far in advance but hopefully these links will help you out.

I guess I'll put it out there that my buddy Theron's new band The Greater Good is playing at Lovejoy's sunday at 8:00. I haven't personally heard them yet, but I'm sure you can bang your head to it.

Well I missed linking up with any of you guys. Also didn't skate at all except some curbs in a parking lot of a hotel for about ten minutes.

Anyway had a pretty great time down there and hope everyone else did. Very glad to be back in NY though just in time for the spring.

Austin is a hoot, glad you had a good time. I only made it to one SxSw event and spent the whole time on the ramp instead of partying. 2 extensions, 1 with pool coping, a channel, and a bank-wall. Couldn't step away. If you come out next year try to work shredhouse into your schedule, it's well worth it.

Dudes...

I will be in Austin from this Monday the 16th until Friday the 20th. Heading back to NYC that evening.

I'll be in work related stuff/training from 9:00am until 3:00pm. I definitely want to skate.

Just coming off a knee injury, so not looking for too heavy a session, want to keep it way chill. I'll be staying at the Driskill Hotel on Brazos street, wherever the fuck that is. I know nothing about Austin.

Can someone please recommend a good park, I'm not too tranny inclined having spent a lot of time in NYC (no, I'm not a pant-roller)?

If anyone can offer some advice I'd be psyched. Thanks.

Sorry for the bump. Just got into UT as a transfer student. Moving here from Long Beach in Fall. Looking for anyone with leads on an apartment or needs a roomate around that time. Leads on jobs, suggestions on good areas to look for places, or you can tell me to fuck off and I'll understand. I know this site isn't craigslist but I can't leave any stones left unturned. Thanks in advance!

1st off, welcome to Austin. Depending on your taste there are some cool areas near the UT area. I like the North Loop neighborhood, just a couple miles north of the campus. It's a little hipster'ish but there's a cool little skate shop there (Apparition), usually lots of pretty girls strolling around, and rent was reasonable last time I looked. I'd say stop by the shop, let them know you're new to town and ask about spots. Just a short drive from the shop there's the Patterson park mini-ramp and some fun ledges in the park across the street. Pretty much the rule in any new city is go to the shops and ask around.

If you ever find yourself up in the NW area stop by Hobo's Skate Shack in Cedar Park. Also a group of really stand-up dudes. Just steer clear of TekGnar. Fuck that place.

When I was going to scout the city before moving here I actually found a lot of promising housing shares on craigslist. I think noting in my add that I was a skateboarder helped filter the responses so the ones I did get were more on my level.

Good luck man. Austin is a rad place with a great skate community, tons of good spots, and several sick parks.

Thanks for the tips, man, Ill look into North Loop. Pumped to hear that the skate scene is healthy there. So excited to become a regular in a place other than the typical SoCal park/spot.
