Title: Skateboarding and Youtube
Post by: foureyedjim on March 04, 2012, 04:04:14 AM
Been noticing this trend in skateboarding youtube channels on the rise.  Not saying posting your skate clips on youtube is wrong, but these new ones seem to be real heavy on self promotion, gaining subscribers, and all that youtube nonsense.  Not to mention most of their footy is park stuff.

I don't know what to really make of it (good or bad?), but my gut feeling tells me this changing skate culture for the worse.

Agreed. The fact that alot of companies are releasing their videos over the internet is a sign of change already happening. Youtube just lets alot of people get that attention they are vibing from. Some of us still like to just get out there and shred, camera or no camera.

Its good for us, plain skaters. Its hard for the come ups. Its kinda harder to stand out now with so much footage around.

I love Youtube whoring... granted, my channel isn't a slick or a particularly well thought out entity, more of a video blog and a spot to do video reviews on lots of skate related gear, but it's fun. I started my account a number of years ago just to dump video files so I wouldn't have to host them, but pretty soon got into having Q & A's with groms and older dudes about just about all things skate related.

I actually think it's helped me not so much stay on board, but given me some incentive to kick myself in the ass and go just a little more than if I didn't do it... most of my personal skating is just with homies and stuff, but with reviews I get to indulge in my geek side and then (mostly) self film the gear being used. I am stoked on not having a time limit for videos, cause now my reviews are roughly a half hour long 'cause I talk too damn much. Anyway, backing it. Made a lot of friends on YT- like Slap, if you every visit another city/state, you have a local or a crew there you can hook up with and roll with. Super awesome.

Related mindfuck: a few years ago me and Jim Thiebaud went over to Epic Skatepark in Sacramento and when we walked in the door two little groms were like "hey, you're grimcity!" Then they showed me some impossibles they'd learned in part because of an old video tutorial I made ages ago. I really, really like that we can (if we choose to) engage other skaters just as we would on a local level and try to spread some basic skate philosophy, facts, and tips as opposed to the shit kids get fed by the corpos... I do like some of the Ride Channel stuff, but it's rad to see random people that are both passionate and unpaid making good vids from informative to just really sick skating.

...having said that, skating before the internet meant repairing a shit ton of rerererereplayed VHS tapes. Stoked that you can just open a browser and find shit ya like.

When will people realize that the 'internetization' of modern culture is inevitable?

There is no need to define it as good or bad (especially if you are a washed up hypocrite like Kalis)

+I approve of GRIM's post!

I guess if your intentions are good, I can't say shit haha.  I just have the innate urge to oppose "youtube whoring."  I'm sure I'm not the only one out there that's put off by those "subscribe and check out my other videos" parts of the video.  Well, I'll just wait and see how this aspect of skate culture plays out.  I can't do anything about it, so i'll just hope that it'll be good for skateboarding.

I don't think that regular folks who are un-sponsored are ruining the skate culture. If anything its the whole bootleg/pirating thing thats ruining the quality of skateboarding videos.

yeah, it's been done for so long that it's become acceptable to post parts online that should have been bought with the actual video.  I dunno, I can understand it if some people can't afford to buy every video, but people should at least try to buy at least a few.

I get what you mean but groms take the lead from there peeers and the folk they look up to. With sites like hellaclips and the berrics, kids are wanting to emulate the people they look up to. The generation of today have been brought up with everything being instant. Everything from vids, instagram, twitter online 5 minutes after it was filmed to being able to text a buddy to find out where he is and whats going down. Gone are the days of turning up at a spot and maybe finding someone there and waiting 5 years for the latest vhs to drop.

true indeed. i am with you on affordable skate videos.. most videos are $20, but some companies like Expedition One released madness for just $5, $lave's radio/television was $ 5 too and habitats origin was around $8.

yeah, i used to be subcribed to nKa actually, but I eventually lost interest due to the amount of footage he was releasing, but more importantly, the quality of the footage.  There was way too much (good, but not that interesting) park footage.  He also tends to post videos of the same spot.  I just felt numb from watching his videos too much.

I'm not bummed on the aspect of the internet where you can get access to things instantly, but I do wish people like nKa would be more selective with what he releases.  But of course, that would mean he would put out less content, and I doubt he would do that, because I'm sure at least at the back of his head, he's thinking about monetizing his youtube videos.  It's nothing new, but lately skateboarders have started to catch onto this more and more, and I don't know if people have the right intentions with their youtube channels.

Yep, there is definately a glut of really repetative filmers/footy out there. Similar shit at the same park over an over does get really dull. I regularly clear out my youtube subs. Watch stuff to get hyped and go skate not shit to fall asleep to

Yeah it's possible, considering how many people skate, I can see how there would be huge amounts of people uploading really short clips of them skating.

on a qasi-related note, at a certain point (4 years?) its probably better for everyone if the video just comes out on youtube- there are a lot of classic skate parts that i would have never gotten to see if you fellas hadn't posted on them

Can we finally accept that all the shit we heard about the internet killing skateboarding was wrong? As it turns out, there are still plenty of full-length vids coming out, plus there's a ton of daily footage to get hyped on, from your favorite pro to unknowns with bro-cam vids, etc.

I love trolling around & watching videos from random kids in Ohio or whatever. It's fucking awesome if you ask me. My only stipulation is I won't watch park footage - I don't care who it's from.

It's just my preference - skate park footy bores me. It bored me when they had it in the old World videos too. There's exceptions of course, & I will say I'm more likely to be into park footage if it's Cardiel, TNT, Grant, etc. I mean, some of the stuff they do can really only be done in a park.

But ledge/street/rail-type skating.... snooze. I don't care how killer it is... get out of the park & take it to the fucking streets.

I fucking hate that nka dude, dslr always looks so turrible. That being said i love being able to watch new gnarly skate clips daily so youtube is pretty cool,  But i do miss the days where id only be able to look through magazines and watch the same videos over and over until a new one came out. Internet clips dont hit you as hard as buying the new video that just came out and going home an popping it in the dvd player.
