Guilty as well. I was a security guard in the UC Berkeley library. It was the best job ever though. Didn't have to wear a uniform, sat at a desk and checked ids, gave directions and walked around every now and then. Pretty much just did school work most of the day. Downside was that there are a few spots at the library. I told my boss during the interview that I would have difficulty kicking out skateboarders and he actually appreciated my honesty and told me I would never have to. Whenever we saw skaters, which was rare (plenty of better spots on campus), we would only say something if a library employee complained. It only came up one time and there was another security guard next to me and I just told her she would have to handle it. So yeah, I was sort of a traitor.

Kind of sort of. In a way you could've been a traitor, but you saw the error in your ways and wouldn't kick out skaters, nice.

No. I never even met people. I usually just drove around at night making sure that different corporations had locked the doors on their buildings, turned on their alarm and shit.

The security company I was working for asked me one once if I would be interested in working at a mall, yes, as a fucking mall cop. My immediate response was "no way".

hah! I would hardly call that being a "security guard."  Weren't you more or less in charge of what happened inside the library?

Nothing wrong with being a security guard if you're not a douche.

Coming on a skateboarding message board and making a special post telling everyone to deal with it, however...

That was my title but yes, my job was mostly concerning what happened inside. Never had too much go down. Our library system is huge - I worked in 2 libraries that were connected by a third, 4 story underground library. People have been known to bone in there and I have found condoms and underwear before (didn't have to clean that up luckily) and have smelled weed on several occasions. One time someone hung a banner outside the library on a ledge 2 stories up in support of gay marriage. It had two penises kissing with hearts floating around them and said "chode love. Can't we all just get along?" Never really caught anyone in the act of anything except drinking something other than water or eating where they weren't supposed to. It would depend on my mood or how obvious they were on whether or not I would enforce it. Always seemed to miss the yearly streaking tradition.

Edit: And it was the best job for meeting girls without even trying. You sit at the entrance of the main library everyday so every undergrad sees you pretty much. When I would go to parties people would always tell me they see me at the library everyday. Some of those people also happened to be attractive women. It was like the perfect ice-breaker.

I thought this would get more of a rise out of everyone, but I'm surprised to see that some others have worked security.  I don't see it as joining the dark side at all.  It's a good job to get as a student, especially if you are looking into getting into other law enforcement work.  It would be ideal to live in a world where you could skate everywhere, but I can see why some companies and businesses don't want you skating on their property.  It annoys pedestrians, it destroys ledges and makes them look like shit, it makes a lot of noise, etc.  Not all of us are fat wannabe cops looking for a confrontation.  When it comes to kicking kids off the property for skateboarding, that's not really an issue for me, because that's my job at that moment in time.

Being a security guard seems like the most boring job possible. Most of the time those dudes just sit in some office building at 5 in the morning when there's nothing going on. Every once in a while they will get up and kick you out of a spot.

Are you a cop?  You know you have to tell us if you are.  It's a law.  Or it's in the movies, or something.  Ah fuck it, I can't remember.

I think the official policy is this: if you're an undercover law enforcement officer, and a drug dealer politely asks you to, say, shoot some heroin, you can't do it, unless you're way way undercover

I wonder what the difference is between illegal night filming sessions on private property vs. breaking into Berrics one night for a video part. Doesn't the fact that "TFs" are under lock and key mean that they're effectively skatestopped? Wouldn't Berra and Koston be considered, in a sense, archetypal dickhead security guards?

Isn't admitting to being a security guard kind of just admitting to being a failure in life? I don't think i've ever heard a kid say they want to be a security guard when they grow up. I don't hate security, I pity them as the pathetic losers they are.  No real animosity, as you don't really have any authority. I find fucking with security's ego hillarious and am thankful for the opportunity to do that from my own home.

Also, did you seriously say that you hope it leads to law enforcement jobs and that you aren't a wannabe cop in the same post? Hillarious. By the way person, The Police academy leads to a job as a cop, not being a night watchman.

I just interviewed to be an Airport Services Officer. I suppose I'm worse of a failure than the original poster since that would make me a wannabe guard (and probably not qualified at that), but it pays about the same as a high school teacher or regular cop.

The funny thing is that I don't have the slightest respect for authority or law enforcement. It's just that the airport security industry is growing while the relevance of my university education is shrinking.

You learn a lot from a security job that applies to police work.  Dealing with bums and crackheads, or stuck up punks such as yourself who like to give us a hard time.  Learning 10 codes on the radio...etc.  Tons of good experience.  I'm also going to college for law and security while I work, and many close family members of mine are police officers...so eat a dick.  I'm done with this thread, I had my fun.

Yeah, you guys need to grow the fuck up.

Coming from someone who wants to get a rise out of people by intentionally posting something extremely vague on a message board. You make it seem like you're the only one on here who has ever held a job before and that being a security guard doesn't mean you do shit. Don't get all self-righteous because you yelled at some douchebag kid and threatened him with your pepper spray.

EDIT just to say. 10 WHOLE CODES!?!?!?! Wow you must be so proud. You definitely have the upper hand amongst your classmates. That must take a whole 5 minutes to memorize!

I'm done with this thread, I had my fun.

go back to narcworld fool.

That's ridiculous.  Tell  me you're not one of those guys who carves the anarchy sign into there arm, and listens to the casualties.  I'm out here breaking stereotypes.  Police are necessary, and many of them are out there serving the community, and keeping the streets safe.  It's a thankless job with many risks...and I'm sure deep inside all of you can at least respect that.

PS:  Leftover crack is horrible.  Try the clash.

What I don't respect is some guy jumping on here blatantly seeking a negative reaction so that he can argue his side in a means to justify his career choice. Seems like there's some inner-conflict going on, otherwise this wouldn't be necessary at all. Nobody would care if you're a security guard if you're not an asshole. It's just a job man, and running into a cool guard or cop once in a while is refreshing.

I will say a couple of things though. First being that most security guards do not get into the line of work it because they are pursuing towards a career in "law enforcement." It's a near low-wage lackey job that any moron can do. Probably why so many security guards are complete dipshits.

If you are trying to become a cop, good for you. I think you're just a troll but I used to skate with a guy quite often, and he became a police officer, it's not like this is unheard of. Still, some people talked shit, but he's one of the most genuinely decent people I've ever known and a super gnarly skater, every session was mind-blowing, so anyone who talks shit would change their tune real quick if they met him or saw him skate.

Your career is your business but when you come around with the "I'm a security guard, deal with it" attitude you just come off like a huge douche.

Whoever said "security pays as much as a teacher or cop," first of all- no, it doesn't. Not even close, and you don't get a pension or benefits from it. Not to mention, as much as I hate cops, they actually play a role in society and can go home with a feeling of accomplishment.
I've thought of being a professor at times, but I love the work I am doing. Of course, I don't pass my job off as "just a gig" and have never said something as stupid as "I'm not a cop wannabe, this will help me become a cop, which I wannabe!"

So security is like an "in" for cops who are too stupid to go straight to the academy? That's not actually good experience and the academy has an age limit so the more time you spend not going to police academy the less likely you will be to make it.
In terms of stuck up punks, I hope you are a security guard in LA. Security guards who are polite and know their role I comply with, security guards who think they have any authority get a storm of spit in their face as I deride them for being losers and I refuse to even stop skating.
As much as I understand how likely it is that this is a troll, I enjoy the shit out of mocking security guards. They are so cute. Now that I am an adult its even funnier. They can be intimidating to kids, but once you are taller and in better shape than them its fucking hillarious.

^ You live in AZ, don't you?
I don't want to talk too much about my pay, but I live quite comfortably on my teacher's salary. I'll never get rich, but money isn't something I worry about. I actually wouldn't be able to take a second job. Teaching leaves me sitting at home planning and grading a huge chunk of my time. The time is the killer if anything is. The pay thing for the most part is the fact that considering the amount of work I do, I don't get paid like the lawyers and businessmen who work similar hours. In countries like Singapore they do though.

Whoever said "security pays as much as a teacher or cop," first of all- no, it doesn't. Not even close, and you don't get a pension or benefits from it.

That was me. LAPD starts at $46,583 and a LAUSD teacher with regular credentials ("Table T" 2010-2011) starts at $44,071. The Airport Services and Park Ranger positions I recently applied to both start at $44,436 a year and include full medical, sick leave, holiday and vacation pay, PERS, tuition reimbursement, and Dependent Care Assistance Plan. The fact that I can get full city employee benefits is the main reason I'm even applying.

I won't pretend that the high end of the pay scale is in the same league as cops or teachers (and not taking into account the days off teachers get). It's really a stepping stone to be an airport runway groundskeeper (weedpuller) who make over $60k a year.

I wasn't going to post in this thread again, but you have absolutely no fucking clue what you're talking about.  No, security is not an "in" for cops who are too stupid, security can be a job for people who want to get a feel for some of the things police do.  There are plenty of things that relate to police work.  As a security guard, you learn to deal with the public in a professional manner, you learn 10 codes on the radio, you learn how to write in your memo book (there is a certain way you are supposed to write) , write occurrence reports...etc.  Plus, I am in school right now, and this job allows me to work on the weekends.  I've worked banks, offices, hotels...it teaches you how to remain calm and professional when you have some drunk asshole screaming at you and not being cooperative.  This is all invaluable experience.  Also, you obviously know nothing about the hiring process for police, because the older you are, the better it is.  It's called general life experience.  If you're under 25 and apply, your chances are slim, because you are still too young to handle the pressures of the job.  You don't need to act like you know, because I know, and I'm telling you how it is.

Lastly, you wouldn't guess it, but I am very polite when I work security, because I understand the law, and I understand I have no authority.   Security are the eyes and ears...that's it.  If anything goes down, we call the cops.  In some ways we do have authority though, as many guards that i work with carry handcuffs.  We can arrest someone under 494 of the criminal code, as a citizen if they are caught doing something indictable on the property.  Skateboarding doesn't count.  Don't forget that most of us are unarmed, and that can make the job very dangerous at times.  There are plenty of people who love to take the piss out of you because they hate law enforcement of any kind, and they know security can't do shit, so they take out there hate for cops on you...working at banks late at night is sketchy as fuck, especially with some of the people who come in to use the ATM's late at night.

Whoever thinks security gets payed as much as cops is a fucking person.  Security guards make anywhere from minimum wage to 20 bucks an hour, depending on if you are just a patrol guard, or if you're mobile patrol and respond to alarms in a car.  Also, whoever said you don't get benefits from it is a fucking person as well!  You get full benefits as a full time employee.
