I think the mega ramp really opened up tricks like this. I wonder how many of the people doing 900s could do them in 14 ft vert ramps like how tony did them for years.

The 1080 was sick, but to me this shows where skateboarding is going wrong. A 12 year old at the megaramp has obviously been training like an olympic athlete and getting all sorts of access to crazy ramps. 12 year old skateboarders are supposed to be street rats, whether its in the olympics or not, shit like this makes me think skateboarding is becoming like gymnastics or figure skating, with the top contenders being trained for competition their whole lives.
I mean, good for the kid, I've got no hate on him personally, but it shows a real weird cultural shift in skateboarding.
Also, yes, if Tony wasn't in his 40's and was able to skate a mega regularly like these kids he would have been doing 1260's 5 years ago, and a regular vert ramp is about 11-12 feet tall, 14 would even be big.

I think we are safe. Where I am at there is no shortage of little groms bouncing around in full pads with shit eating grins poking out from under their ill fitting helmets and not a care in the world. In my opinion the mega ramp has always been a little pocket of insanity that I think most people can appreciate but don't necessarily relate to or have any desire to do themselves.

Except for the fact that Mr. White can actually skate half-pipe with beastly skills and has almost landed the same trick without the use of a gigantic roll in and extended vert wall.

does anybody else feel like mega-ramping is it's own sport completely unrelated to skateboarding? to me it feels like surfing and wind surfing. i'm not, by any means, saying it's not gnarly as shit, because i certainly wouldn't do it, but can we actually call that skateboarding? aside from the fact that he's on a skateboard, where's the similarity?
this kid and that brusso brusco whatever kid, who do they even ride for? we'll never see their decks in a shop, or see anything but an energy drink or sunglasses ad from them. is there this whole subgenre (stupid word, i know) of skateboarding like this? where they make a very good living yet we'll never see them?

Not much. I mean ok i watched the kid doing a 1080 in an one minute clip. Well it was gnarly but after the clip is over i dont care. Imagine i went skating after seeing the clip and i didnt even mention it to my homies. On the contrary when i saw the bonus stuff of dollin being a kid at volcom lets live extras (If i am not mistaken) we were talkin about how amazing was dollin since he even was a kid even though his skating wasnt groundbreaking. It was his spirit.
Its always nice to see skateboarding progressing but skill is like the 50% (if not less) of what skateboarding means to me, and kids nowadays score perfectly at this 50% at the other one not that much.

Yeah, maybe the Birdman could've done it if he wasn't forty but this kid is twelve and he's fucking sick. I think its better to say that without Tony Hawk we wouldn't have Shaun White or this 12 year old kid in terms of their skills on the board as well as huge companies like red bull throwing so much money behind skateboarding.
I just hope skateboarding doesn't get crazy parents who force their parents to skate from an early age in the hope of going on the street league circuit and get sponsored by redbull, nike, skullcandy, oakley, quicksilver and whatever board company their agent thinks portrays the right image. Maybe I do want skatebarding to go there. Just a travelling freak show of adhd skater kids and soccer moms and monster girls and xtreme espn reporters and fire works and shit. Great place to trip acid and freak out. There will always be Thrasher and anti-hero and SLAP.

^I kinda agree with this dude. Let them do their thing and I'll keep doing mine. That 1080 didn't even phase me, really it was just "meh whatever" to me. And I completely agree, if it was done in a halfpipe with no crazy roll in to gain tons of speed it would have been 1000000x sicker.

Shawn Almost busted one on a Half Pipe at the end of a run........it's not amazing to see a kid get a 70ft bridge built to do a 1080 on a 27ft vertwall. Like seriously. It's boring to see a whole clip just for it. It's nice to know it's been done but this is whack to see. "We built a bridge for him he can do it!" Like fuck that, if you're going to get a trick, do it the old fashion way and work for it. No shortcuts.

it already has, a ton of times. it manifested itself in the form of the late 80s vert contest scene, the x-games scene (which, from what i can gather, a lot of skate kiddies don't think is very cool anymore), and more recently, street league/nyjah's dumbfuck dad. fads will blow up, blow themselves out, and as long as you keep doing what you're doing in the meantime, they'll basically mean nothing and have zero impact in the long term.
someone already nailed it in this thread.. pretty amazing feat, but whether me or you have to care about it is optional.

Since the beginning, the credibility of a trick was based on the terrain it was done over. Everyone knows a kickflip down a four stair isnt as impressive as one down a 12. Yeah its gnarly in its own right to land a 1080 on 26ft vert ramp, but its not fair to be so quick to compare this kid to Shawn White who tried his trick on a 10-14 foot half pipe where its much more difficult get as much air. I think the whole beauty of Tony's 900 was how fast he had to rotate the trick with the little air he could get.
There's no shame in this kid for building such a huge ramp to do his trick and theres no shame in Andrew Reynolds for bringing a giant roll in so that he could get speed to backside flip wallenburg when the handicap ramp was blocking the original run up. Its just tough for me to measure both tricks on the same plane with those who have tried the same 1080 on smaller ramps or had to bomb the hill to skate wallenburg. Its not less impressive, its just different.

Exactly the way I feel. The first time I saw a mega ramp was in the DC video. It's supposed to be the "ender," but it just didn't interest me then and it doesn't now. I think you said it pretty perfectly. Aside from the fact that he's on a skateboard, it isn't really "skateboarding," at least not the kind I'm interested in or want to participate in. Impressive stuff, but I just don't care, the same way I don't care about surfing or snowboarding.

Brown snowboarding sans bindings. The spin to win thing is alright but it is a bit 'me too' which for the culture which spawned most of the others bar surfing (which now also borrows heavily from skating) it seems a bit cart before the horse. Like you say, no hate for junior but snowboarding with all the nice scenery is a better watch if you want helicopter twirls.
